Rock bursts occur frequently in coal mines, and the mechanical properties of saturated coal specimens under coupled static‐dynamic loading need to be studied in detail. Comparative tests of coal specimens having different water content under static and static‐dynamic loading are conducted using the split Hopkinson pressure bar (SHPB) and RMT‐150C test systems. The results demonstrate that the natural specimen strength is greater than that of seven‐day (7D) saturated specimens under both uniaxial compression and triaxial static compression loading; however, the dynamic strength of 7D saturated specimens is lower than that of natural specimens under one‐dimensional static‐dynamic loading. The particle size of the 7D saturated specimens is relatively small under uniaxial static compression and one‐dimensional static‐dynamic loading, and the specimen particle sizes before and after static triaxial loading tests and three‐dimensional static‐dynamic loading tests do not exhibit an obvious difference.

The technology described as gob-side entry driving was adopted in the Zhaogu No. 1 mine to resolve the issues pertinent to mining succession tension, serious roadway deformation, and support difficulties. The key parameters of coal columns must be studied to ensure the stable support effect of along-air tunneling under high stress. A calculation for the vertical stress of a coal pillar is proposed, and the location of the breaking line in the top plate in the hollowed mining zone is determined by considering the breakage attributes of the basic uppermost large structure of the key layer, combined with the internal and external stress fields, and the limit equilibrium zone theories. FLAC3D software is employed to simulate the geological requirements of the mine, the characteristics of vertical stress of the coal pillar, and the surrounding rock of the roadway under the technical plan of leaving a 4.5-m coal pillar. The software is also used to verify and analyze the actual measurements. The outcomes suggest that the basic roof break is located at 2.65 m on the side of the coal pillar in the near mining area, and there is a trapezoidal internal stability region around the coal pillar that can provide lasting and stable support of the roadway. The displacement of the two helpers of the roadway is between 100 and 500 mm, and the displacements of the top and bottom plates are less than 300 mm, which ensures the roadway is surrounded by rock when the high-stress requirements occur. The safety of the roadway is determined under high-stress conditions.

Based on the ventilation characteristics of the gob-side entry retaining face, a mathematical model of spontaneous combustion in the gob-side entry retaining face is established. From the overburden caving of the goaf along the goaf retaining roadway, the development characteristics of rock strata and residual coal fissures in the goaf are summarized and analyzed. In addition, by using numerical simulation software, the effects of normal mining period, goaf retaining roadway as return air roadway, air leakage prevention, and nitrogen injection measures in goaf on spontaneous combustion in goaf are studied, and the distribution characteristics of flow field, oxygen concentration field and temperature field in goaf are obtained. The results show that the mining of the Geng 20 working face has a significant impact on the Geng 19 coal seam. The Geng 19 coal seam is in the range of fracture zone, and the fracture is well developed. Furthermore, the permeability coefficient of the Geng 19 coal seam increases sharply, air leakage in the goaf is increased along the goaf retaining roadway, and the range of oxygen concentration is enlarged, which results in a temperature rise in the goaf. Therefore, air leakage measures are proposed along the goaf to inject 900 m3/h of nitrogen into the goaf, which can prevent the spontaneous combustion of coal left over in the goaf. In addition, according to the characteristics of fracture development and numerical simulation of spontaneous combustion in goaf under the goaf retaining roadway, the hierarchical prevention, control, and fire extinguishing technology system of the goaf retaining roadway is constructed.

The natural and water‐saturated states of coal samples under static and static‐dynamic loads were tested using the Split‐Hopkinson pressure bar (SHPB) method and RMT‐150 system, respectively. The differences in the strength reduction coefficient and elastic modulus reduction coefficient of water‐saturated coal samples under static and static‐dynamic loads were discussed. The experimental results for coal were compared with the corresponding characteristics of typical sandstone samples under static and static‐dynamic loads. Furthermore, a fracture model of a hydrous wing branch fracture under static‐dynamic loading was established based on the theory of fracture damage mechanics. The difference in dynamic strength between coal and sandstone samples for both the natural state and water‐saturated state was analyzed. On this basis, the effect of water on the fracture surface of coal and the tensile strength and shear strength of the branch fracture surface were fully considered. In addition, criteria of the branch fracture surface for crack initiation and crack arrest were also established. Finally, the phenomenon of increasing elastic modulus in saturated coal samples was explained with this criterion.

When inducing cracks, soundless cracking agents (SCAs) do not generate vibration, harmful gas, dust, nor flying rock fragment, making them suitable for hard rock roof breaking, rock burst prevention, oil or gas reservoir stimulation, and building demolition. In this study, SCA‐induced crack initiation and propagation in different stress conditions were modelled using a modified cohesive element method. A new traction‐separation law for describing rock compressive shear strength was proposed. The crack length and direction in bidirectional isobaric and unequal stress fields were analyzed in detail. The crack initiation pressure and the incremental ratio of crack length to SCA expansion pressure were proposed as two indicators to evaluate the difficulty in rock breaking in deep underground. Results indicate that (1) the modified cohesive element method used in this study is feasible to model crack propagation in deep rocks; (2) the maximum expansion pressure of SCAs depends on rock elastic modulus and geostress field and should be measured under a condition similar to deep underground prior to SCA borehole spacing design; when using the SCAs with a maximum expansion pressure of 100 MPa in 600 m underground, the suggested borehole spacing is less than 220 mm; and (3) σ3 dominates the crack initiation pressure while the principal stress ratio σ3/σ1 and notch direction control the direction of crack propagation.

The massive emission of low concentrations (≤0.5%) of methane (CH4) from ventilation roadways results in resource waste and environmental pollution. To mitigate these emissions, an enrichment tower for low-concentration methane is designed, and segregation and non-segregation experiments are conducted. The results reveal that stable concentrations of methane under segregation and non-segregation states in the enrichment tower gradually increase with height, with a maximum methane concentration of 0.64% and 0.54%, respectively. This shows that the methane enrichment effect in free diffusion conditions is more significant under the segregation state than under the non-segregation state. The stable concentration of methane in the middle and upper sections of the enrichment tower shows an increasing trend. However, the stable concentration of methane in the lower section of the enrichment tower has an increasing trend (less than 0.50%). According to the methane molecule Boltzmann distribution law, methane concentration enrichment decreases with height, and the conversion of the methane from the segregated to non-segregated is irreversible. Consequently, industrial applications of methane enrichment from buoyant forces are not feasible for low concentrations of methane.
