Azimuth multichannel (AMC) synthetic aperture radar (SAR), which contains multiple receiving antennas along the azimuth, can prevent the minimum antenna area constraint and provide high-resolution and wide-swath (HRWS) SAR images. Channel calibration and along-track baseline estimation are important topics in an AMC SAR system, since they have a great impact on image quality. Based on the signal model for stationary target of AMC SAR, this paper first analyses the influence of the along-track baseline and channel imbalances on SAR images by simulation. Then, a novel method to simultaneously estimate the along-track baseline, phase imbalance and range sample time imbalance (RSTI) based on the azimuth cross-correlation in the two-dimensional frequency domain is addressed. In addition, with the help of simulations and real data acquired by Gaofen-3 (GF-3), the effectiveness of this method is verified by comparing with some existing methods. Finally, this paper analyzes the estimation accuracy of this method under different scenarios and signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs), and points out the direction for future research.

The technique of azimuth multichannel synthetic aperture radar (SAR) system has become a potential solution to the irreconcilable conflict between high-resolution and wide-swath (HRWS) confronted with in a traditional SAR system. Unambiguous imaging, especially for a scene with moving targets, is one of the crucial research topics in the HRWS SAR system. This paper proposes a simultaneous imaging scheme of moving targets and stationary clutter for maritime scenarios. First, the moving target echoes are extracted from the stationary clutter. After that, two methods working in completely different principles are used to estimate the radial velocity of each moving target, and the estimated result is used for phase compensation. After that, the moving target echoes are added back to the stationary scene echo and sent to the reconstruction filter. Lastly, the reconstructed echo can be processed by the classical Chirp Scaling (CS) algorithm. Experiments are carried out using the Chinese GaoFen-3 dual-channel data. The estimated velocities of the moving targets are verified by automatic identification service (AIS) information, and the imaging results show that the false targets are effectively suppressed and the moving targets also return to their correct positions along the azimuth.

Azimuth multi-channel (AMC) synthetic aperture radar (SAR) is an advance technology that can prevent the minimum antenna area constraint and provide high-resolution and wide-swath SAR images. The calibration of phase imbalance is an important topic in AMC SAR signal processing since it has a significant impact on the image quality. For one SAR image, the phase imbalance is usually considered as a constant. However, because of the attitude errors, antenna position errors, target elevation, target motion and phase mismatch of the antenna pattern, the actual phase imbalance is time-varying in azimuth and space-varying in range. Even though the space-time variation of phase imbalances is too tiny to make little effect on the product quality, it is still meaning to study the variation. On the one hand, it is possible to quickly estimate the phase imbalance of the whole observing operation, and eliminate the influences of target motion, etc. on the phase imbalance. On the other hand, some parameters, such as motion, can be retrieved by phase imbalance. This paper first establishes the signal models between phase imbalances and attitude errors, antennal position errors and target elevation. Then, the signal model is verified by some simulations based on the parameters of Gaofen-3 (GF-3). In addition, the phase imbalance of the real data acquired by GF-3 is processed. Finally, based on the procession results of GF-3 real data, this paper makes some discussions and points out the direction for the future work.

The azimuth multichannel synthetic aperture radar (SAR) system can meet the requirements of high resolution and wide swath (HRWS) simultaneously, which overcomes the constraint of the traditional single-channel SAR. However, for a moving target illuminated by the azimuth multichannel SAR system, its radial velocity will lead to ambiguous components and mislocation in the image. Therefore, the radial velocity estimation plays an important role in improving the image quality and moving target relocation, especially for large ships on the open sea. However, as the pulse repetition frequency of a single channel is less than the Doppler spectrum, the traditional velocity estimation methods working in the image domain are out of action. This article suggests an idea that the issue of velocity estimation is converted into that of the linear phase errors estimation combining the linear fitting method, and it is assumed that the target has been already detected before applying the velocity estimation algorithms. To estimate the linear phase errors, two algorithms operating in the Doppler domain are introduced and compared, namely the subspace-based method and the modified frequency correlation method. The advantages of the proposed approaches are free from iteration operation and high accuracy. Besides, the effectiveness of the methods is demonstrated via simulation data and GaoFen-3 real data from ultra-fine stripmap mode. Finally, this article analyzes the velocity estimation accuracy of the two methods and the influence of channel imbalance through substantial experiments.

This paper focuses on an improved imaging algorithm for spotlight synthetic aperture radar (SAR) with continuous Pulse Repetition Interval (PRI) variation in extremely high-resolution. Conventional SAR systems are limited in that a wide swath cannot be achieved with a high azimuth resolution in the meantime. This limitation can be overcome by Pulse Repetition Frequency (PRF) variation in a SAR system. However, there are problems such as the ambiguities of point targets or extended targets caused by nonuniform sampling. A reconstructive method, Nonuniform Discrete Fourier Transform (NUDFT) has been presented in the current literature, but it is rather computationally expensive. In this paper, a modified sinc interpolation based on NUDFT is proposed, which is used to reconstruct the uniformly sampled echo in time domain. Since the interpolation kernel length is relatively short, it is more computationally efficient. Then, the two-step processing approach combined with the modified sinc interpolation is further presented, which has much better accuracy than that combined with the conventional sinc interpolation. Both the simulated data and the extracted GF-3 data experiment demonstrate the validity and accuracy of the proposed approach.

There are two useful methods of current measurement based on synthetic aperture radar (SAR): one is along-track interferometry (ATI), and the other is Doppler centroid analysis (DCA). For the ATI method, the interferometric phase must be accurate enough for ocean current measurements. Therefore, the space-varying of phase imbalances along the range, caused by antenna phase center position error, attitude error, antenna electronic miss pointing, antenna pattern mismatch, and other reasons, cannot be ignored. Firstly, this paper mainly analyzes the above possible factors by using real GF-3 ATI data and error model simulation results. Secondly, the ocean current has been preliminarily measured by the ATI method and the DCA method, using CDOP model, based on the GF-3 ATI data of the ocean scene near Qingdao, China, which is up to around −1.45 m/s. The results of the two methods are in good agreement with the correlation coefficient of 0.98, the mean difference of −0.010 m/s, and the root mean squared error (RMSE) of 0.062 m/s. Moreover, by comparing with the current measured by high-frequency surface wave radar (HFSWR), the correctness of the analysis is further proved.
