During mechanical activation, qualitative changes that can produce various phenomena occur in the material. In this study, anhydrous sodium carbonate was mechanically activated for 2, 7, 14, and 28 minutes in a vibro mill at a frequency of 3000 oscillations per minute. After activation, four series of activated samples were stored in the air at room conditions for 31 days (relaxation period). To monitor the kinetics of the transformation process of activated sodium carbonate samples, i.e. the mechanism of sodium bicarbonate formation during relaxation, Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy analysis was used. FTIR testing was performed as a function of relaxation time for all four series of samples, with characteristic groups observed: CO32-, HCO3- and OH-. The obtained results provided kinetics parameters for the transformation of sodium carbonate into sodium bicarbonate due to the chemisorption of moisture and carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.

This paper presents the investigation of the air-pollution management possibility in Bor (Serbia) using statistical analyses of the correlation dependence of SO2 pollution concentration and meteorological parameters. This kind of approach allows data to determine the shape of time trends; models serial correlation and dependence on covariance; and provides statistical analyses of data. Air quality control in the area of Bor is measured at four monitoring stations: City park; Institute of Mining and Metallurgy; Jugopetrol oil logistic centre and Brezonik suburb. There is also a meteorological station near the aforementioned institute that measures temperature; air humidity; atmosphere pressure; wind speed and direction. The results received from all monitoring stations are processed by the Institute of Mining and Metallurgy in Bor. The data from the reported documents were used for statistical analyses, for determining the correlation between SO2 emission concentration and meteorological parameters. The source of SO2 emissions is the local copper smelter, built within the town of Bor from 1961–1963. However, the disposition of the pollutant concentration is influenced by meteorological parameters (air humidity, atmosphere pressure, speed and wind direction). The successful application of these statistical analyses in this paper points to a possibility of its usage in air pollution studies.

The exploitation of copper ore in the Majdanpek Copper Mine takes place at the open pit South Mining District. The operation takes place in the complex conditions, and a special feature is that the capital infrastructure facilities: the state road M24, 35 kV transmission line and ri-verbed of the Mali Pek River are located in the northwestern contour of the open pit. Due to the occurrence of landslide in this part of the open pit, the continuity of the ore exploitation process in the mining system of excavation-processing was endangered, as well as the stability of infrastructure facilities. Reconstruction of the northwestern slope of the open pit will eliminate all existing and potential risks and create the conditions for functioning of the mine and town of Majdanpek.

Mining induced the ground subsidence and consequently, damages on objects above excavation works is a serious problem all over the world. In this paper, a new approach for subsidence and deformation prediction based on the stochastic Pataric-Stojanovic method is presented. Since the calculation using the equations of this method is very complex, the original computer program package with the title MITSOUKO has been purposely designed. The MITSOUKO program enables calculating at any point of the land surface and representing the results owing to the possibility of their integration and further processing in the Geographical Information System (GIS). The components of the GIS are used to realize the spatial analysis.
