The synthesis and properties of a few dozen highly evolved analogues of (S)-MHPOBC are reported. The liquid crystal phases, and phase transition temperatures and enthalpies, as evidenced by polarized optical microscopy and differential scanning calorimetry, respectively, are given. The helical pitch in pure compounds and some mixtures is estimated using the selective reflection method. All of the compounds show antiferroelectric phases, and some key structure–property relationships for the new materials are reported. Specifically, it is found that the length of the oligomethylene segment of a novel partially fluorinated alkoxy ether tail incorporated into the structures strongly influences the stability of the antiferroelectric phase and the observed phase sequences, as well as the values of the helical pitch and its temperature dependence. The formulation of a family of broad temperature range eutectic mixtures possessing the highly desirable orthoconic antiferroelectric phases with long helical pitch is described.
New functional multicomponent ferroelectric liquid crystalline mixtures have been designed while searching smart self-assembling materials with submicrometre periodicity of the helical structure responding definite demands for application in electro-optic devices and photonics that exploit the deformed helix ferroelectric effect. The resulting designed mixtures possess the paraelectric smectic A* and the tilted ferroelectric smectic C* phases over a very broad temperature range down below the room temperature. The mesomorphic, electro-optic and dielectric properties have been studied and discussed. The presence of a very stable enantiotropic ferroelectric smectic phase exhibiting almost temperature independent helical pitch within 150–250 nm range and reasonably high values of the tilt angle might allow these mixtures to be applicable for practical purposes. GRAPHICAL ABSTRACT
Employing thermodynamical, optical and comprehensive dielectric studies, we have investigated a freshly synthesized chlorinated MHPOBC analogue antiferroelectric liquid crystal; it exhibits different chiral SmC sub-phases, viz. SmCα*, SmC* and SmCγ*, at considerably lower temperature in comparison with MHPOBC, and a wide range room temperature antiferroelectric SmCA* phase. Dielectric spectroscopy investigations under planar molecular anchoring were carried out in the frequency range 1 Hz to 10 MHz. The data measured for low and high frequency regions were corrected by the method of fitting operation of the theoretical equations. Seven different modes of dielectric relaxation in the different phases were identified. Soft mode relaxation was identified in the SmA* and SmCα* phases. The Goldstone mode, characteristic of the ferroelectric phase, was observed in the SmC* and SmCγ* phases. Two characteristic peaks are seen in the spectrum of the SmCA* phase: one, at high frequency, corresponds to fluctuation where the molecules in neighbouring layers are rotating in opposite phase; the other, at low frequency, arises due to phase fluctuation in the helicoidal superstructure.
Several new binary liquid crystalline mixtures have been designed and their properties were studied by complementary methods. It has been shown that even both pure components used for the mixture design possess the ferroelectric behaviour; the induced antiferroelectric smectic phase has been detected for one of the prepared mixtures. The phase diagram has been constructed and the existence of the antiferroelectric phase was confirmed by switching time and dielectric spectroscopy measurements. Some of the resulted mixtures possess very high values of the tilt angle that reaches close below 45° degrees at saturation. Values of spontaneous polarisation were found within 50–200 nC/cm2 in dependence of the mixture’s composition. Due to specific properties, the obtained mixtures might be interesting for further design of multicomponent mixtures and formulation of the advanced nanocomposite systems. Graphical Abstract
Eight types of bicomponent systems composed of antiferroelectric compounds with different polarity of achiral chain and different temperature dependence of helical pitch as well as three multicomponent mixtures composed of antiferroelectric compounds with opposite helical twist sense were studied. The phase miscibility was tested by polarising optical microscopy. The results of the helical pitch and helical twist sense measurements obtained by a spectrophotometric method of selectively reflected light and by polarimetric method, respectively, are presented. It was found that it is possible to control helical pitch length and temperature of helix twist inversion in antiferroelectric mixtures by controlling the ratio of compounds with left- and right-handed helix in such mixtures, although all of them have the same chiral terminal chain.
