Due to the absence of surviving architectural examples of theater as a distinct architecture in India during the Sultanate and Mughal periods, scholars have largely overlooked this dimension of Islamic cultural history in India. This paper highlights the nuanced relationship between Islamic rulers and Indian theater during these eras. Contrary to prevailing assumptions, Sanskrit theater continued to flourish under Muslim patronage, becoming integrated into courtly performances. The cultural exchange between Hindu and Islamic traditions gave rise to a unique theatrical fusion, reflected in dramatic literature, puppetry, and religious performances. Architectural spaces—ranging from dedicated venues to multifunctional structures—served as dynamic stages for this cultural interplay, reshaping the development of Indian theater.Continuing this exploration, the study delves into the pivotal role of Sufi shrines, Shia Hussainiyyas, and entertainment theaters as theatrical platforms during the Sultanate and Mughal periods. It investigates how these religious spaces and entertainment venues served as vibrant stages for dramatic performances, unveiling diverse narratives enacted within these sacred precincts and public spaces. From opulent court venues like the Audience Hall to bustling entertainment hubs such as Tarab Abad, the evolution of theatrical platforms is meticulously elucidated. Highlighting a rich array of performances, from classical narratives to comedic spectacles.

The mosques of Bengal exhibit a unique decorative style, representing diverse ornamentation on both interior and exterior facades. This diversity reflects the varied backgrounds of the artisans, culminating in what can be termed 'Bengali style' emerging from external influences and local Bengali traditions. This style spread along the ancient Bengal region during the sultanate period 944-1538; including present West Bengal and Bangladesh. This research, based on field studies and observation in Kolkata, Malda, Orissa, Bihar, Karnataka, and Madhya Pradesh, aims to identify the aesthetic features in Bengal sultanate mosques connected to a specific mode of decoration: the employment of terracotta tiles. Employing a chronological study backed by statistics, the research seeks to address questions about the terracotta tiles’ properties, artistic origins, techniques used, and the impact of geographical and cultural variables on its diversity. Furthermore, an attempt is made to propose approximate dates for five mosques with uncertain dates based on their artistic style properties.

This study discusses the motives behind the construction of numerous mosques in Ahmedabad city during the Gujarat Sultanate era. It examines the political, economic, and social factors that influenced urban expansion and mosque location criteria. Ahmedabad experienced three major phases of urbanization, reflecting shifts in capital cities and demographic growth. The study explores the role of princes, dignitaries, and royal court women including those professing Hinduism, in mosque construction. It outlines the totality of factors underlying the urban development of medieval Gujarat, focusing on the relationship between Sufism and urban development in Ahmedabad during the Sultanate era. The Sufi presence was key in selecting the sites of mosques, which were not just religious centers, but also symbols of political patronage and urban planning initiatives. The profound respect for Sufism extended beyond mere religious devotion, Sufi masters being actively engaged in political affairs alongside sultans. The deliberate construction of mosques along procession routes underscores the intentional nature of urban planning in Ahmedabad, which was influenced by Sufi s during the Sultanate. Suburban growth and mosque construction were under control, which shaped the city’s historical landscape. This comprehensive study highlights the enduring effect of spiritual, political, and social dynamics on Ahmedabad historical evolution.
