I've got a feeling: Sensory (or afferent) nerves bring sensations of touch, pain, or temperature variation to the central nervous system and brain. Using the tools and materials of organic electronics, Kim et al. combined a pressure sensor, a ring oscillator, and an ion gel–gated transistor to form an artificial mechanoreceptor (see the Perspective by Bartolozzi). The combination allows for the sensing of multiple pressure inputs, which can be converted into a sensor signal and used to drive the motion of a cockroach leg in an oscillatory pattern. Nowadays, the soar of photovoltaic performance of perovskite solar cells has set off a fever in the study of metal halide perovskite materials. The excellent optoelectronic properties and defect tolerance feature allow metal halide perovskite to be employed in a wide variety of applications. This article provides a holistic review over the current progress and future prospects of metal halide perovskite materials in representative promising applications, including traditional optoelectronic devices (solar cells, light-emitting diodes, photodetectors, lasers), and cutting-edge technologies in terms of neuromorphic devices (artificial synapses and memristors) and pressure-induced emission. This review highlights the fundamentals, the current progress and the remaining challenges for each application, aiming to provide a comprehensive overview of the development status and a navigation of future research for metal halide perovskite materials and devices.

A graphdiyne-based artificial synapse (GAS), exhibiting intrinsic short-term plasticity, has been proposed to mimic biological signal transmission behavior. The impulse response of the GAS has been reduced to several millivolts with competitive femtowatt-level consumption, exceeding the biological level by orders of magnitude. Most importantly, the GAS is capable of parallelly processing signals transmitted from multiple pre-neurons and therefore realizing dynamic logic and spatiotemporal rules. It is also found that the GAS is thermally stable (at 353 K) and environmentally stable (in a relative humidity up to 35%). Our artificial efferent nerve, connecting the GAS with artificial muscles, has been demonstrated to complete the information integration of pre-neurons and the information output of motor neurons, which is advantageous for coalescing multiple sensory feedbacks and reacting to events. Our synaptic element has potential applications in bioinspired peripheral nervous systems of soft electronics, neurorobotics, and biohybrid systems of brain–computer interfaces.

Perceptual enhancement of neural and behavioral response due to combinations of multisensory stimuli are found in many animal species across different sensory modalities. By mimicking the multisensory integration of ocular-vestibular cues for enhanced spatial perception in macaques, a bioinspired motion-cognition nerve based on a flexible multisensory neuromorphic device is demonstrated. A fast, scalable and solution-processed fabrication strategy is developed to prepare a nanoparticle-doped two-dimensional (2D)-nanoflake thin film, exhibiting superior electrostatic gating capability and charge-carrier mobility. The multi-input neuromorphic device fabricated using this thin film shows history-dependent plasticity, stable linear modulation, and spatiotemporal integration capability. These characteristics ensure parallel, efficient processing of bimodal motion signals encoded as spikes and assigned with different perceptual weights. Motion-cognition function is realized by classifying the motion types using mean firing rates of encoded spikes and postsynaptic current of the device. Demonstrations of recognition of human activity types and drone flight modes reveal that the motion-cognition performance match the bio-plausible principles of perceptual enhancement by multisensory integration. Our system can be potentially applied in sensory robotics and smart wearables.
