The synergistic corrosion inhibition effect between calcium lignosulfonate (CLS) and three kinds of inorganic inhibitors (Na2MoO4, Na2SnO3, and NaWO4) with various molar ratios on Q235 carbon steel in alkaline solution (pH 11.5) with 0.02 mol/L NaCl was investigated by cyclic potentiodynamic polarization, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, linear polarization, scanning electron microscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Molybdate and stannate in hybrid inhibitor could promote the passivation of steel and form a complex film, which could suppress the corrosion effectively. Moreover, the insoluble metal oxides in the complex film formed by three kinds of inorganic inhibitor could help the adsorption of CLS onto the steel surface. The CLS molecules could adsorb onto the steel surface and metal oxides to form an adsorption film to protect the steel from corrosion. A three-layer protection film formed by a hybrid inhibitor, including passivation film, deposition film, and adsorption film, would effectively inhibit the corrosion reactions on the steel surface. The CLS compound with molybdate with the ratio of 2:3 shows the best inhibition effect on both general corrosion and localized corrosion.
The corrosion inhibition performance of pyridine derivatives (4-methylpyridine and its quaternary ammonium salts) and sulfur-containing compounds (thiourea and mercaptoethanol) with different molar ratios on carbon steel in CO2-saturated 3.5 wt.% NaCl solution was investigated by weight loss, potentiodynamic polarization, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, and scanning electron microscopy. The synergistic corrosion inhibition mechanism of mixed inhibitors was elucidated by the theoretical calculation and simulation. The molecules of pyridine derivative compounds with a larger volume has priority to adsorb on the metal surface, while the molecules of sulfur-containing compounds with a smaller volume fill in vacancies. A dense adsorption film would be formed when 4-PQ and sulfur-containing compounds are added at a proper mole ratio.
Cold gas-dynamic spray (cold spray) is an evolving coating deposition and restoration technology in which particles are deposited above the sonic speed. This paper presents the non-destructive three-dimensional characterization of cold sprayed stainless steel coating. The visualization of coating morphology and volumetric porosity and the analyses of porosity size and spatial distributions confirmed that dense stainless steel coating with non-connected, micron-sized gradient porosity can be successfully produced by cold spray. The suitability of X-ray tomography for characterizing cold sprayed coatings was also assessed.
The combination of water electrolysis and renewable energy to produce hydrogen is a promising way to solve the climate and energy crisis. However, the fluctuating characteristics of renewable energy not only present a significant challenge to the use of water electrolysis electrodes, but also limit the development of the hydrogen production industry. In this study, the effects of three different types of waveforms (square, step, and triangle, which were used to simulate the power input of renewable energy) on the electrochemical catalysis behavior of Ni plate cathodes for HER was investigated. During the test, the HER performance of the Ni cathode increased at first and then slightly decreased. The fluctuating power led to the degradation of the Ni cathode surface, which enhanced the catalysis effect by increasing the catalytic area and the active sites. However, prolonged operation under power fluctuations could have damaged the morphology of the electrode surface and the substances comprising this surface, potentially resulting in a decline in catalytic efficiency. In addition, the electrochemical catalysis behavior of the prepared FeNiMo-LDH@NiMo/SS cathode when subjected to square-wave potential with different fluctuation amplitudes was also extensively studied. A larger amplitude of fluctuating power led to a change in the overpotential and stability of the LDH electrode, which accelerated the degradation of the cathode. This research provides a technological basis for the coupling of water electrolysis and fluctuating renewable energy and thus offers assistance to the development of the “green hydrogen” industry.
The corrosion behavior of 2205 DSS in HCl solutions containing sulfide were investigated using mass loss test, electrochemical measurements, scanning Kelvin probe, scanning electron microscope (SEM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The results showed that Na2S had significant effect on corrosion behavior of 2205 DSS in dilute HCl solutions. Slight Na2S can prevent the passive film from localized attacking of Cl− in HCl solution with a concentration lower than 0.1 mol/L. However, when the concentration of HCl solution higher than 0.137 mol/L, Na2S addition will tremendously promote corrosion. The intergranular corrosion combined surficial active dissolution of 2205 DSS could happen in HCl + Na2S solution.
The acoustic emission (AE) technique was applied to monitor the pitting corrosion of carbon steel in NaHCO3 + NaCl solutions. The open circuit potential (OCP) measurement and corrosion morphology in-situ capturing using an optical microscope were conducted during AE monitoring. The corrosion micromorphology was characterized with a scanning electron microscope (SEM). The propagation behavior and AE features of natural pitting on carbon steel were investigated. After completion of the signal processing, including pre-treatment, shape preserving interpolation, and denoising, for raw AE waveforms, three types of AE signals were classified in the correlation diagrams of the new waveform parameters. Finally, a 2D pattern recognition method was established to calculate the similarity of different continuous AE graphics, which is quite effective to distinguish the localized corrosion from uniform corrosion.
