Discontinuities exist widely in high rock slopes and threaten their stability at all times. To accurately characterize the information of rock mass discontinuities in high slopes, the layered rock slope on the north side of the Fushun West Open-pit Mine was taken as a typical sample, the high-definition images were collected using unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) photogrammetry technology, and the Agisoft PhotoScan software was then used to generate the 3D rock slope model (i.e., 3D point cloud data) in this study. After the noise reduction processing of the generated rock slope model, the orientation and dominant grouping of the rock mass discontinuities were calculated by the KNN (K-nearest neighbor) search and the PCA (principal component analysis) algorithms, and the calculated results are calibrated with manual measurements in the local slope area. Moreover, the high-definition images containing different rock layers were selected to identify the detailed information of the rock discontinuities using the MATLAB program. This study shows that the orientation information of the rock discontinuities extracted from point cloud data are close to the corresponding result of manual measurements. There are great differences in the orientation of the discontinuities at different rock layers. The small-angle discontinuities are densely distributed in brown shale, which has a serious influence on the stability of the cracked rock slope. This research can provide a reference for the stability analysis of layered rock slopes and the prevention of landslide disasters in the Fushun West Open-Pit Mine.

The dynamic damage of cracked rock threatens the stability of rock structures in rock engineering applications such as underground excavation, mineral exploration and rock slopes. In this study, the dynamic damage of cracked rock with different spatial geometry was investigated in an experimental method. Approximately 54 sandstone specimens with different numbers of joints and different filling materials were tested using the split Hopkinson pressure bar (SHPB) apparatus. The energy absorption in this process was analyzed, and the damage variable was obtained. The experimental results revealed that the dynamic damage of cracked rock is obviously influenced by the number of cracks; the larger the number, the higher the energy absorption and the bigger the dynamic damage variable. Moreover, it was observed from the dynamic compressive experiments that the energy absorption and the dynamic variable decreased with the strength and cohesion of the filling material, indicating that the filling material of crack has considerate influence on the dynamic damage of cracked rock.

Shear strength deterioration of rock joints and its induced instability of key blocks subjected to dynamic disturbance constitute the mechanism of many geological disasters such as rockburst, landslide, and rockfall. In this study, the influence of dynamic disturbance on rock joints was quantified in the form of stress, of which model was established by quasistatic method. The dynamic shear strength of rock joints was analyzed theoretically following the Coulomb-Navier criterion and further investigated experimentally by split Hopkinson pressure bar (SHPB) tests with impact velocities of 4.850 m/s, 8.722 m/s, 12.784 m/s, and 16.935 m/s. The effect of engineering disturbance on shear strength of rock joints was measured, and a degradation coefficient was used to describe it quantitatively. Considering the degradation of dynamic shear strength of rock joints and its influence on block stability, the method for determining key blocks under dynamic disturbance was given. Implementing this method into the program of Geotechnical Structure and Model Analysis-3D (GeoSMA-3D) developed by the authors’ team, the visualization of key blocks was achieved. From theoretical analysis and experimental investigation, it was figured out that the shear strength of rock joints is degraded under dynamic disturbance. The degradation of friction angle becomes more sensitive than that of cohesion. Additionally, numerical results show that the number of key blocks was increased with the increasing impact velocities.
