Bridge detection in remote sensing images (RSIs) plays a crucial role in various applications, but it poses unique challenges compared to the detection of other objects. In RSIs, bridges exhibit considerable variations in terms of their spatial scales and aspect ratios. Therefore, to ensure the visibility and integrity of bridges, it is essential to perform holistic bridge detection in large-size very-high-resolution (VHR) RSIs. However, the lack of datasets with large-size VHR RSIs limits the deep learning algorithms’ performance on bridge detection. Due to the limitation of GPU memory in tackling large-size images, deep learning-based object detection methods commonly adopt the cropping strategy, which inevitably results in label fragmentation and discontinuous prediction. To ameliorate the scarcity of datasets, this paper proposes a large-scale dataset named GLH-Bridge comprising 6,000 VHR RSIs sampled from diverse geographic locations across the globe. These images encompass a wide range of sizes, varying from 2,048 × 2,048 to 16,384 × 16,384 pixels, and collectively feature 59,737 bridges. These bridges span diverse backgrounds, and each of them has been manually annotated, using both an oriented bounding box (OBB) and a horizontal bounding box (HBB). Furthermore, we present an efficient network for holistic bridge detection (HBD-Net) in large-size RSIs. The HBD-Net presents a separate detector-based feature fusion (SDFF) architecture and is optimized via a shape-sensitive sample re-weighting (SSRW) strategy. The SDFF architecture performs inter-layer feature fusion (IFF) to incorporate multi-scale context in the dynamic image pyramid (DIP) of the large-size image, and the SSRW strategy is employed to ensure an equitable balance in the regression weight of bridges with various aspect ratios. Based on the proposed GLH-Bridge dataset, we establish a bridge detection benchmark including the OBB and HBB tasks, and validate the effectiveness of the proposed HBD-Net. Additionally, cross-dataset generalization experiments on two publicly available datasets illustrate the strong generalization capability of the GLH-Bridge dataset.

Since manual inspection of analog instruments is inefficient, many computer vision-based automatic reading systems have been proposed recently. However, most of them use fixed cameras, which are costly due to the large number of used cameras. Although some other systems adopting the pan-tiltzoom camera and the movable inspection robot can avoid using plenty of cameras, they have to overcome high computational cost in aligning the camera to the tested instrument. Meanwhile, most existing systems are instrument type dependent, and hence cannot handle multiple types of instruments simultaneously. In this paper, first, based on an inspection robot, an automatic reading system equipped with a pan-tilt-zoom camera is designed for different types of round-shape analog instruments. Then, a fast camera alignment algorithm based on visual servo is proposed, in which YOLOv3 is applied and improved to locate the instrument, and guide the camera to iteratively align to the instrument. Finally, a monocular-vision pointer reconstruction algorithm is proposed to accurately read the instrument. Experimental results demonstrated that our proposed system is fast and reliable in the camera alignment process, and is effective in reading different types of analog instruments during the robot-based inspection.

Deep learning-based synthetic aperture radar (SAR) image classification is an open problem when training samples are scarce. Transfer learning-based few-shot methods are effective to deal with this problem by transferring knowledge from the electro–optical (EO) to the SAR domain. The performance of such methods relies on extra SAR samples, such as unlabeled novel class’s samples or labeled similar classes samples. However, it is unrealistic to collect sufficient extra SAR samples in some application scenarios, namely the extreme few-shot case. In this case, the performance of such methods degrades seriously. Therefore, few-shot methods that reduce the dependence on extra SAR samples are critical. Motivated by this, a novel few-shot transfer learning method for SAR image classification in the extreme few-shot case is proposed. We propose the connection-free attention module to selectively transfer features shared between EO and SAR samples from a source network to a target network to supplement the loss of information brought by extra SAR samples. Based on the Bayesian convolutional neural network, we propose a training strategy for the extreme few-shot case, which focuses on updating important parameters, namely the accurately updating important parameters. The experimental results on the three real-SAR datasets demonstrate the superiority of our method.

This paper proposes a new automatic and adaptive aircraft target detection algorithm in high-resolution synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images of airport. The proposed method is based on gradient textural saliency map under the contextual cues of apron area. Firstly, the candidate regions with the possible existence of airport are detected from the apron area. Secondly, directional local gradient distribution detector is used to obtain a gradient textural saliency map in the favor of the candidate regions. In addition, the final targets will be detected by segmenting the saliency map using CFAR-type algorithm. The real high-resolution airborne SAR image data is used to verify the proposed algorithm. The results demonstrate that this algorithm can detect aircraft targets quickly and accurately, and decrease the false alarm rate.
