Grape canes are a waste product from viticulture that show potential as an industrially extractable source of stilbenes, which are valuable for medical and other purposes. In this work, grape canes collected in three consecutive years (2014–2016) at six different places in South Moravia, Czech Republic were extracted, and the contents of trans-resveratrol, trans-ε-viniferin, and r2-viniferin were determined by high-performance liquid chromatography. The study included three blue grape varieties of Vitis vinifera L. (Cabernet Moravia, Blaufränkisch, and Piwi variety Laurot) and four white grape varieties (Chardonnay, Green Veltliner, Piwi variety Hibernal, and Piwi variety Malverina). From the viewpoint of producing extracts with high stilbenes content, the Hibernal variety is clearly the best. The mean amounts of the stilbenes for this variety at all localities and for all three years were 4.99 g/kg for trans-resveratrol, 3.24 g/kg for trans-ε-viniferin, and 1.73 g/kg for r2-viniferin. The influence of vintage, locality, and variety on the amounts of stilbenes was studied using PCA analysis. In contrast to expectations, there was no strong impact of locality on stilbenes content. The differences were varietal for most varieties, regardless of the area of cultivation. Laurot and Hibernal varieties did differ significantly in that respect, however, as they exhibited clear dependence on location.

A method for identification of highly fluorescent compounds in vine leaves infected by Plasmopara viticola was developed using reversed phase liquid chromatography with simultaneous diode array and fluorometric detection. Fluorescent compounds were extracted from leaves with a methanol-water mixture (70:30). Separation by HPLC was performed using a C18 column and gradient elution with water-acetonitrile mixtures (20–80% of acetonitrile). The main unknown fluorescent compound was identified by line spectral comparison with a standard obtained by UV photoisomerization of trans-resveratrol glucoside, and its structure was confirmed by liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry. Identification and structural elucidation of the fluorescent compound in the leaves of Vitis vinifera allows early detection of Plasmopara viticola invasion.

The present article explores the importance of vineyard soil management. Studies on under-vine management have yielded a wide range of results, with some indicating potential benefits for vine growth and productivity. However, the methods of under-vine management and their specific effects on vineyard parameters require further research. The aim of this study is to evaluate the relationships existing between the different types of management of under-vine areas and the vegetation grown in this zone and to determine the effects of under-vine management on the yield and quality of Traminer grapevines. By examining various approaches, the research aims to provide insights into the optimising of vineyard management methods to achieve enhanced biodiversity and grape quality in this specific geographical context. The findings indicated that management of the under-vine area can impact the composition of plants, grape yield and quality. Under-row management had an effect on the number of plant species and their composition. The highest weight of bunches was found in MIX (a species from the Fabaceae family), while the lowest was found in the MECH treatment (bare soil). MULCH, MONO and MIX consistently had higher yeast assimilable nitrogen (YAN) in grapes than other treatments. In many of the evaluated parameters, the influence of the seasons was evident.

The response of selected physiological parameters to water deficit was investigated in three grapevine cultivars (Vitis vinifera L.): ‘Blue Portugal’, ‘Müller Thurgau’, and ‘Sauvignon Blanc’. The aim of the greenhouse experiment was to evaluate genotype-specific responses to reduced water availability and to assess the effects of water deficit on gas exchange, pigment content, chlorophyll fluorescence, and leaf water potential. Grapevine plants were grown in pots filled with perlite and subjected to five irrigation treatments ranging from 15 to 120 mL per container, applied to create a gradient of water availability. Measurements were performed over a one-month period at regular weekly intervals. Reduced irrigation generally resulted in decreased physiological performance compared to control plants. ‘Müller Thurgau’ showed the strongest reduction in chlorophyll content and gas exchange parameters under low irrigation, indicating high sensitivity to water deficit. In contrast, ‘Blue Portugal’ exhibited relatively stable pigment content under reduced water availability. Differences among cultivars in leaf water potential and gas exchange suggest contrasting water-use strategies. Overall, the results indicate higher drought tolerance in ‘Sauvignon Blanc’, while ‘Müller Thurgau’ appears to be the most sensitive cultivar.

The study assessed the yield and quality as well as the energy potential of biomass from stalks and pomace of four grape varieties, Riesling, Chardonnay, Zweigelt, and Merlot Vitis vinifera L., grown in temperate climate conditions. The research is innovative because the evaluation of the energy potential of biomass originating from Vitis vinifera L. has not been carried out so far in the northern wine-growing regions. Field studies were conducted in 2023 in the Experimental Vineyard of the University of Life Sciences in Lublin, located in southeastern Poland. Biometric yield assessment showed that Chardonnay vines were characterized by the lowest mass of clusters and peduncles, number of berries in the cluster, berry diameter, and peduncle size, and at the same time the highest berry mass among the assessed biotypes. Merlot clusters were characterized by the highest mass of clusters and the largest peduncles. Riesling had the most berries in the cluster, the heaviest peduncles, and the highest share of peduncles in the cluster mass (8.99%). For grape pomace, the LHV values range from 15.98 MJ kg−1 for the Chardonnay variety to 16.91 MJ kg−1 for Riesling, while for peduncles, these values range from 15.11 MJ·kg−1 for Merlot and Riesling to 15.26 MJ kg−1 for Chardonnay. The differences in pollutant emissions are more pronounced between grapevine varieties than between types of biomass (pomace vs. peduncles). The greatest variation among varieties was observed for carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions in the pomace category, while the smallest differences were noted for sulfur dioxide (SO2) emissions. Total gas emissions were highest for Zweigelt pomace (7.72 Nm3 kg−1) and lowest for Merlot (6.99 Nm3 kg−1), while for stalks, Chardonnay had the highest values (6.77 Nm3 kg−1) and Merlot the lowest (7.32 Nm3 kg−1). The largest variation among varieties was observed in the pomace category. These results indicate differences in exhaust gas emissions for different plant parts and grape varieties, which are relevant for optimizing production processes and ensuring sustainable development.
