Seasonal water-level fluctuations can profoundly impact nutrient dynamics in aquatic ecosystems, influencing trophic structures and overall ecosystem functions. The Tian-e-Zhou Oxbow of the Yangtze River is China’s first ex situ reserve and the world’s first successful case of ex situ conservation for cetaceans. In order to better protect the Yangtze finless porpoise, the effects of water-level fluctuations on the trophic structure in this oxbow cannot be ignored. Therefore, we employed stable isotope analysis to investigate the changes in the trophic position, trophic niche, and contribution of basal food sources to fish during the wet and dry seasons of 2021–2022. The research results indicate that based on stable isotope analysis of the trophic levels of different dietary fish species, fish trophic levels during the wet season were generally higher than those during the dry season, but the difference was not significant (p > 0.05). Fish communities in the Tian-e-Zhou Oxbow exhibited broader trophic niche space and lower trophic redundancy during the wet season (p < 0.05), indicating a more complex and stable food web structure. In both the wet and dry seasons, fish in the oxbow primarily relied on endogenous carbon sources, but there were significant differences in the way they were utilized between the two seasons (p < 0.05). In light of the changes in the trophic structure of the fish during the wet and dry seasons, and to ensure the stable development of the Yangtze finless porpoise population, we recommend strengthening the connectivity between the Tian-e-Zhou Oxbow and the Yangtze River.

The Kizil reservoir in the Tarim River basin is an important habitat for the native Schizothoracinae fish (including Aspiorhynchus laticeps, Schizothorax biddulphi, Schizothorax eurystomus, Schizothorax intermedius and Schizothorax barbatus). Unfortunately, these species are threatened by many exotic fish, such as Ctenopharyngodon idellus, Silurus asotus. As an isolated habitat, the Kizil reservoir is an ideal area for studying biological invasions. However, the impact of invasive species on indigenous species in this reservoir remains unknown. In this study, the niche width and niche overlap between invasive and indigenous species in Kizil reservoir were studied based on stable isotope analysis. The results showed that niche width of two invasive species, S. asotus and C. idellus, was larger than that of native fish species, which confirmed the hypotheses that successful invaders have larger niche width. The niche overlap analysis showed that the two invasive species had high niche overlap with native fish species, which meant that there might be intensive interspecific competitions between them. The invasion of non-native species could be the main reason for the decrease of native species in the Kizil reservoir.

Background: The mangrove ecosystem has been severely threatened by the invasive species Spartina alterniflora for a long time. The macrobenthos diversity, as a biological indicator for assessing ecosystem sensitivity, can respond sensitively to the removal of the invasive S. alterniflora. Traditional morphological method has been commonly used to study macrobenthos diversity. However, it is difficult to comprehensively and accurately assess using traditional morphological method alone. Few studies have systematically assessed the effectiveness of environmental DNA in monitoring the diversity of macrobenthos in mangrove ecosystems. Methods: Traditional morphological method and eDNA metabarcoding (using COI primers) were combined to analyze changes in macrobenthos diversity in September (before S. alterniflora removal), October (after S. alterniflora removal but before mangrove planting), and December (after S. alterniflora removal and mangrove planting) of 2022 at the Quanzhou Bay Mangrove Wetland Nature Reserve, Fujian Province, China. Results: The results showed that 26 species were identified using traditional morphological method, while 212 species were identified through eDNA metabarcoding, especially more Arthropod were detected. However, no species were found to be common between the two methods at the species level. In terms of abundance, Arthropods and Annelids were the dominant groups for two methods, both 28.38% in the traditional morphological method and 38.38% and 32.94% in the eDNA metabarcoding, respectively. Additionally, the traditional morphological method indicated that following the removal of S. alterniflora, species richness, density, biomass, and diversity indices of macrobenthos initially declined, but subsequently showed a consistent recovery trend.Discussion: Our study suggests that eDNA metabarcoding has tremendous potential to monitor macrobenthos diversity, but shows low consistency in species with traditional method. For broader application in macrobenthos diversity using eDNA metabarcoding, further optimization is needed. Additionally, the results suggested that after the removal of S. alterniflora, macrobenthos diversity initially declined but gradually recovered, and long-term monitoring is warranted in order to better understand the changes in macrobenthos diversity with planting of mangroves.

Fish are vital in enhancing the stability of marine ecosystems. Therefore, understanding the ecological niches and interspecific correlation characteristics of their dominant species provides a good scientific basis for the protection and management of marine biodiversity. In this study, on the basis of survey data from trawls conducted in the waters off Xiamen in the spring (April) and autumn (November) of 2021, the ecotopes and interspecies connectivity of the dominant fish species were investigated using the relative importance index (IRI), χ2 tests, the association coefficient (AC), and Pearson and Spearman analyses. According to the IRI, there were 23 fish species with higher values, including 15 species in spring and 15 species in autumn. The 15 dominant fish species could be subdivided into wide-, medium-, and narrow-ecotope species, of which there were 2 and 3 wide-ecotope types in spring and autumn. The niche overlap indices exhibited a range of 0.000–0.809 in the spring and 0.000–0.915 in the autumn, showing small differences between the two seasons. The interspecific correlations between the dominant fishes in Xiamen’s waters in spring and autumn were weak, and both showed non-significant positive correlations, indicating that the correlations between the dominant fishes in this sea area are relatively independent. The findings of this investigation provide a fundamental database and theoretical framework for researching the adaptive mechanisms of marine fish in the Xiamen Seas.

The invasion of Spartina alterniflora is one of the main threats faced by mangrove wetlands in Quanzhou Bay, Fujian. To effectively manage S. alterniflora, mangrove plants (Kandelia obovata, Aegiceras corniculatum, Bruguiera gymnorhiza, Rhizophora stylosa, and Avicennia marina) were used to replace it in 2022 to restore the wetland ecosystem. Samples of meiofauna and marine nematodes were collected four times, including in September 2022 (before the removal of S. alterniflora), October 2022 (after removal), and December 2022 and March 2023 (after planting mangrove plants). This paper investigates changes in the composition, abundance, and biomass of meiofauna in different time periods, with a specific focus on comparing the community structure and biodiversity indices of marine nematodes in S. alterniflora and mangrove habitats. The results indicate that among the five meiofauna groups identified, marine nematodes account for 92.91%, 91.91%, 92.03%, and 85.92% of the total meiofauna abundance in the respective study periods. In the S. alterniflora habitat in September, marine nematodes were identified belonging to 12 families and 20 genera, of which 6 genera were dominant (percentage ≥ 5%). They were Ptycholaimellus, Parodontophora, Terschellingia, Halichoanolaimus, Metachromadora, and Parasphaerolaimus. In the mangrove habitat in December, marine nematodes were identified belonging to 15 families and 23 genera, with 6 genera being dominant, namely Daptonema, Admirandus, Parodontophora, Ptycholaimellus, Terschellingia, and Anoplostoma. Comparing the marine nematode communities in the two habitats, the mangrove habitat exhibits higher diversity than the S. alterniflora habitat. There was a change in the dominant genera, and their dominance has decreased. The dominant genera of marine nematodes found in both habitats are common and widely distributed groups. The changes in the abundance of meiofauna and the community structure of marine nematodes following the restoration of the S. alterniflora habitat by planting mangroves provide valuable insights for ecological monitoring after restoration measures in estuarine wetland conservation areas.

Stocking and replenishing fish are crucial for the ecological restoration of aquatic biological resources. Since 2017, a long-term stocking program of Hypophthalmichthys molitrix and Aristichthys nobilis has been underway in the Xixi River basin of the Jiulong River. To understand the status of fishery resources following this long-term stocking program, field surveys were conducted every two months from October 2023 to October 2024. Traditional netting, resource assessment and environmental DNA (eDNA) analysis methods were used to conduct a comprehensive assessment of resource abundance, stocking contribution and ecological adaptability. The research revealed that the annual survival rates for H. molitrix and A. nobilis were 40.25% and 48.19%, respectively. The current numerical ratio of H. molitrix to A. nobilis stands at 1.97:1, indicating that the survival number of H. molitrix is better than that of A. nobilis. No mature gonads were observed in any sampled individuals, demonstrating that the current population is highly dependent on artificial replenishment. This study provides valuable data support for aquatic resource restoration and ecological management in the Jiulong River Basin.
