Tourism, one of the economic sectors that has experienced great development in recent decades and must face unexpected challenges related to the evolution of the global context, needs a sustainable approach to harmonise its effects and impact on the natural and social environment. The aim of this research was to investigate the pro-environmental behaviour of young tourists in hotels versus at home and the main influencing factors of behavioural intention to reuse towels in hotels. The primary data were collected using a survey that was applied to Romanian young people. Eight hypotheses were formulated and tested through paired samples t-tests, a correlation analysis and a hierarchical multiple regression analysis. Our results showed the higher pro-environmental conduct of young guests at home than in hotels, both through their general behaviour regarding the reduction of resource consumption and through their specific behaviour of reusing towels. Our empirical findings also highlighted that tourists’ behavioural intention to reuse towels was positively influenced by an eco-friendly attitude, pro-environmental past experiences and habits to reuse towels at home. In order to achieve sustainable tourism, hotel management should convince guests to bring their ecological habits with them, and educational institutions should use specific methods of raising awareness among young people about an environmentally friendly attitude.

In the current economic and social environment, a real challenge for youth is the acquisition and development of the relevant skills in entrepreneurship in order to consider entrepreneurship as a desirable employment choice. Given this aspect, the purpose of this paper is to investigate the main factors influencing students’ entrepreneurial intentions, paying particular attention to their entrepreneurial family background. Additionally, the paper aims to explore the effect of entrepreneurial family background on the relationship between effectiveness of entrepreneurship education and entrepreneurial intention. We conducted a study where results were based on the outcomes of a survey among Romanian high school and university students in the final year (N = 617). Our four main hypotheses were tested through independent samples t-tests, correlation analysis, and hierarchical multiple regression analysis. The findings highlighted that the students with an entrepreneurial family background reported a higher entrepreneurial intention than those without such a background. The variables that positively influenced the entrepreneurial intentions of the students were entrepreneurial family background, effectiveness of entrepreneurship education, and entrepreneurial personality traits. Furthermore, this entrepreneurial family background negatively moderated the relationship between effectiveness of entrepreneurship education and entrepreneurial intention. For this reason, emphasis should be placed on both formal and informal entrepreneurial education, which will increase the propensity of young people to choose an entrepreneurial career.

This study aims to empirically investigate the labour productivity-wages nexus in the Romanian manufacturing industry, in the 2008-2016 period, and it is motivated by the need to improve labour productivity and its relationship with wages so as to ensure an increase in the living standards of workers. Our results highlight that the manufacturing sector in Romania has an important contribution to the value added and employment of the non-financial business economy. The results of the correlation and regression analysis show that the level of labour productivity positively influenced wages in Romanian manufacturing sector, in the 2008-2016 period. Also, our findings suggest that the high level of wages in some manufacturing subsectors can be mainly explained by a high level of labour productivity. Moreover, results emphasize, on the one hand, persistent and increasing gaps between labour productivity and wages in the 2008-2016 period, in the whole manufacturing sector, and, on the other hand, high gaps between labour productivity and wages among some manufacturing subsectors, fact which can produce the declining labour shares and consequently can increase social inequality.

The ICT sector, as the backbone of the fourth industrial revolution, has major implications for labour markets. Assessing its effect is crucial for the development of policies that support the labour markets, bringing many benefits for workers, organizations, the economy, and society as a whole. The purpose of this paper is to analyse the level of digitalization of the Romanian economy in the EU context, as well as the impact of the ICT sector on employment and skills. The results of the comparative analysis at the EU level show that there are significant negative gaps between Romania and the EU average, as well as between Romania and Visegrad countries, in terms of Digital Economy and Society Index (DESI), the contribution of ICT sector to employment and GDP, employed ICT specialists (as % of total employment) and the impact of ICT on tasks and skills. A strong positive correlation was identified between the level of digitalization of economy and society (expressed by DESI) and the labour productivity in the EU countries. Therefore, in order to reduce these negative gaps and to create an inclusive digital economy and society, a higher level of digitalization of work is required, especially in countries (like Romania) where there is a low level of digital economy, as well as low labour productivity. At the same time, it is essential that the EU labour force develops the necessary digital skills so that workers win the race of digitalization of jobs.

The importance of a smart, inclusive and sustainable development as well as their main determinants had benefit in the last decades of an emergent attention both in the current evolution of the mix set of socio and economic policies as well as in the theoretical and empirical research development. The paper focuses on the role of investments in human capital and innovation, two closely interrelated variables, for a smart, inclusive and sustainable development, within the European Union countries. Our main research results show that, at the EU level, there are significant differences between less inclusive and sustainable developed countries and, correspondingly, between more inclusive and sustainable developed countries in terms of investments in human capital (expressed by the Global Human Capital Index and tertiary educational attainment), on one hand, and the national innovation systems performances (as illustrated by the Summary Innovation Index and R&D intensity), on the other hand. Moreover, the correlation and regression analysis results suggest that existing gaps between inclusive and sustainable development, manifested at the EU level, can be explained by the level of human capital optimization and innovation performances. Therefore, more attention have to be paid to take some specific actions, especially in the less inclusive and sustainable developed countries (such as Romania, Greece, Spain, and Portugal, called also emergent countries) in order to improve innovation performance and the leverage of the human capital for the benefit of both individuals’ themselves and of the whole economy for increasing the inclusiveness and sustainability of development.

The aim of this paper is to analyze the entrepreneurial intentions of the Romanian engineering students and their main determinants in order to identify some ways through which the entrepreneurial behaviour of potential entrepreneurs can be stimulated. The direct effect of entrepreneurship education, entrepreneurial family background and entrepreneurial personality traits on students’ entrepreneurial intentions was analysed in a sample of 138 engineering students, in the last year of study, bachelor’s degree, from Petru Maior University of Tirgu Mures, Romania. The hierarchical multiple regression analysis results highlight that students’ entrepreneurial family background and entrepreneurial personality traits positively influence the entrepreneurial intentions of future engineers. Moreover, results show that students’ participation in entrepreneurship education does not influence significantly their entrepreneurial intentions fact which highlights the need to improve effectiveness of the entrepreneurship education in the university curriculum in order to stimulate high-growth technology ventures of future engineers.

It is widely recognized that achieving highly productive employment is a serious challenge facing inclusive and sustainable development. In this context, the aim of this article was to highlight the main characteristics and mechanisms of productive employment, focusing on the interrelationships between productive employment, and inclusive and sustainable development in European Union countries, during the recent economic crisis and recovery period (2007–2016). The results of the correlation and regression analysis suggest that the high level of inclusive and sustainable development in some European Union countries can be mainly explained by high labor productivity, an efficient sectoral structure of employment, a low level of vulnerable and precarious employment, and low working poverty. Moreover, the results of the principal component analysis and cluster analysis show that there are common features and differences between the European Union member states in terms of their interrelationship between productive employment, and inclusive and sustainable development, which emphasizes the need to take specific actions to transform unproductive employment into productive employment, especially in southern countries and some central and eastern European countries, so that productive employment will be the driving force for development.

The nexus of innovation, entrepreneurship and competiveness represents a real challenge for the European economy, and not only, taking into account the important role of these determinants of inclusive and sustainable development in the context of the Fourth Industrial Revolution. The aim of this article is to explore the relation between innovation, entrepreneurship and national competitiveness, at the EU level, in order to highlight how innovation and entrepreneurship can influence the level of competitiveness and inclusive development in these countries. The results of the comparative analysis based on means-testing using independent samples t-test, at EU level, show that there are significant differences between low-medium innovation performance countries group and high and very high innovation countries performance group in terms of competitiveness, innovative entrepreneurship, productive entrepreneurship and economic and inclusive development, fact which emphasizes the need to take specific actions to improve EU innovation performance, especially in the EU countries included in the low-medium innovation performance countries group for improving national competitiveness and implicitly increasing the level of development. The correlation and regression analysis results suggest that the high level of national competitiveness in some EU countries can be mainly explained by high level of innovation performance, high level of innovative and productive entrepreneurship. The findings of the study can be useful for policymakers to formulate policies for improving national competitiveness within an inclusive development.

This paper approaches the issue of higher entrepreneurship education in motivating young people to start their own business as a viable alternative to the successful integration of university graduates on the labour market. The fundamental question of this research is if, currently, entrepreneurship education influences students’ entrepreneurial intentions and to what extent. The research results, based on the statistical analysis of data collected through a questionnaire distributed to Romanian business and engineering bachelor students in the final year, highlight that business students assessed the effectiveness of higher entrepreneurship education and its positive influence on entrepreneurial intentions to a greater extent than the engineering students. Furthermore, entrepreneurial intentions of engineering students are influenced positively much more by entrepreneurial family background than by entrepreneurship education. The findings provide important highlights for future research, in order to identify the most effective ways of approaching, modernising and expanding entrepreneurship education, aiming to increase entrepreneurial intentions among students, regardless of the graduated field of study.

A series of recent research [5], [15], [16] and [27] highlight the fundamental idea that the manufacturing sector represents a cornerstone of many national economies, a crucial sector to the generation of structural change, productive jobs and sustainable economic growth. The aim of this paper is to highlight the place and role of the Romanian industry, especially the manufacturing sector, in the national economy and its impact on employment and sustainable development. The results of this research show that, Romania has entered a process of deindustrialization for over two decades. After 2000, the intensity of the deindustrialization process decreased which allowed manufacturing to remain the backbone of the Romanian industry and whole economy. A real challenge of the Romanian manufacturing is the low level of labour productivity and low level of medium and high-technology manufacturing activities. In order to increase the resilience of the Romanian economy in the context of economic globalizations and to assure sustainable economic growth and development a reindustrialization through sustainable and productive manufacturing is necessary.

There has been a widely accepted belief that employment growth is fundamental in the fight against poverty and social exclusion. The existence of working poverty proves that even if employment growth still represents the best way to avoid poverty risk it is not always enough, actions being needed to create not only more jobs, but also better jobs. The aim of this paper is to highlight the main causes and mechanism of working poverty in the EU countries, in the recent economic crisis and recovery period (2007–2012), in order to identify some possible measures that need to be taken so that in-work poverty reduces. The comparative analysis shows that the phenomenon of working poverty has been growing in sixteen EU countries and the prevalence of in-work poverty varies significantly across these countries. The correlation and regression analysis results suggest that gaps in the national human and economic development can be explained by disparities in working poverty rate. Vulnerable and precarious employment represents an important factor behind the high level of working poverty from the EU countries in the analysed period. By taking into consideration the cumulative influence of multiple socio-economic variables, for the 2007–2012 period, results of principal components analysis and cluster analysis highlight that there are common features and differences between the EU Member States according to their working poverty, employment performances, efficiency of welfare state system and the level of human and economic development. The findings of this study can be useful for policy makers in order to reduce the phenomenon of working poverty. DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.5755/j01.ee.25.4.6339

Nowadays, the society is characterized by universal features, but it embodies distinctive elements for every economic system and social category. In an ordinary society, rewards usually stimulate competent individuals, regardless of their social background, both from an economic point of view (through money and goods), but also symbolically (through respect). Instead, the chance to penetrate a world dominated by a variety of crises is inevitably determined by social hierarchy. This paper presents the poverty impact on economic development, both in Europe and in Romania, in the last years, marked by poverty risk and social exclusion. Our primary objective concerns the estimation of poverty, in its absolute but also relative line. Finally, we draw the conclusion that the complexity of the current issues is triggered by three main elements namely: the headcount index, the poverty gap and the squared poverty gap. Any pattern used in order to quantify the differences caused by poverty, concentrates on a single aspect: how to reduce the impact of this phenomenon on economies

In Romania, a wide-spectrum of registered entrepreneurial activities can be observed, even though they survive in unfavourable conditions with a very low impact on the economic growth (Szabo and Herman, 2012). This paper presents an analysis of Romania's entrepreneurial performance in the European context based on the Global Entrepreneurship and Development Index (GEDI) proposed by Acs&Szerb (Ács et al., 2013a). GEDI permits a multidimensional analysis of entrepreneurship in comparison with GEM and WB data. Moreover, in order to identify possible policies that foster productive entrepreneurship, a statistical analysis of the Global Competitiveness Index (WEF, 2013) and the Summary Innovation Index (EU, 2013) was made

The present paper represents a socio-economic interdisciplinary perspective and is the result of a study on the way in which social responsibility in business is turned from a theoretical approach, one highly promoted by the European Union, at present, into a concrete action. We have carried out a qualitative research, based on an in-depth interview, on the opinions of 46 managers from a provincial area, the Mures County and from the top business area in Romania – Bucharest. We have reached three main conclusions. Firstly, the interviewees do not correlate the current problems of the Romanian society with active entrepreneurship; they do not find real solutions to these problems through entrepreneurial activities. Secondly, the subjects appreciate that social responsibility actions are mainly performed for economic reasons. Thirdly, the implementation of social responsibility is connected to the size of the enterprise. Big companies are more likely to develop SR actions within a strategic vision.
