Dens invaginatus is a developmental anomaly that results in an enamel-lined cavity intruding into the crown or root before the mineralization phase. This report presents regenerative endodontic treatment of a necrotic immature tooth with Oehler’s type III dens invaginatus of a nine-year-old female patient. A diagnosis of dens invaginatus (Oehler’s type III) and a large periapical lesion was established with the aid of cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT). In the presented case contrary to the classic revascularization protocol, mechanical instrumentation was performed which apparently did not interfere with the regeneration process. After mechanical instrumentation of the invaginated canal by manual K-files, the invaginated canal space was disinfected by triple antibiotic paste followed by blood clot induction from the periapical tissues and the placement of mineral trioxide aggregate. At one-year follow-up, the tooth remained clinically asymptomatic. Radiographic examination revealed complete healing of the periapical lesion. At the 20-month follow-up, the radiographic examination also showed that the open apex was closed and the walls of the root canal were thickened.

Aim: The aim of the study was to examine the prevalence of bifid mandibular canals (BMC) in a Turkish population, using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT). Methodology: The CBCT images of 350 untreated patients (178 male, 172 female ranging in age between 18 and 65,) were included in this study. The presence or absence of BMC was determined in axial, sagittal, and coronal planes by considering gender and side. For statistical evaluation, a chi‑square test was used to determine any differences in the prevalence of BMC with significance set at 5%. Results: BMCs were observed in 129 out of 700 sides (18.42%) and 97 out of 350 patients (27.71%), of which, 55 were in males and 42 in females. Regardless of gender, the right side was more frequently affected (73%). Male patients showed higher prevalence (15.71%) than the female patients (12%). Conclusion: BMC was observed in 27.71% of examined Turkish subjects and detected more frequently in males and on the right side.

Background: The aim of this study was to evaluate and compare the maxillofacial structures of individuals with unilateral cleft lip and palate (UCLP) and healthy controls using cone beam computed tomography (CBCT). Methods: The study included a total of 90 subjects, comprising 45 randomly selected individuals with UCLP (30 males and 15 females, mean age 14.69 ± 3.95 years) in the study group and 45 healthy individuals (30 males and 15 females, mean age 14.46 ± 3.65 years) in the control group. Maxillofacial measurements were taken in three different planes and categorized into five groups, namely vertical, facial, cranial, maxillary, and mandibular. In the statistical comparison between groups, the significance level was determined as p < 0.05. Results: There were no significant differences in the age and gender distributions between the groups (p > 0.05). Upper anterior face height and posterior face height in the UCLP group were found to be significantly shorter than the control group (p < 0.05). Midface width and depth were inadequate in the UCLP group (p < 0.05). Anterior and posterior cranial base lengths were significantly shorter in individuals with UCLP (p < 0.05). Nasal width and interorbital width were significantly greater in the UCLP group (p < 0.05). In addition, maxillary width, maxillary length, and mandibular width were significantly shorter in the UCLP group than in the control group (p < 0.05). Conclusions: While the control group exhibited generally longer measurements in all three dimensions compared to the study group, the skeletal structures adjacent to the cleft demonstrated the most notable developmental deficiency.

Background: The eye lens and thyroid gland are sensitive to radiation and have a risk of being exposed to primary beams and scattered radiation during dental radiographic examinations. Objectives: The present study was aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of bismuth shielding in decreasing eye lens and thyroid radiation dose in periapical radiography (PR), orthopantomography (OPTG), and cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) examinations. There is no information in relevant literature regarding the use of bismuth shielding in dental radiology. Materials and Methods: Dose measurements for PR, OPTG and CBCT were conducted by placing thermoluminescent dosimeter chips on the eye and thyroid location in a standard head phantom. Each one of the scan techniques was performed without any bismuth shielding, and they were then repeated with bismuth shielding in place. The percent dose reduction from bismuth shielding was calculated by dividing the dose measured with bismuth shielding by the dose measured without bismuth shielding. Results: The eye dose was observed to decrease in bismuth shielding group in PR, however it was not statistically significant. The thyroid dose was found to be significantly decreased in PR (P < 0.05). In OPTG and CBCT scans, both the dose to the eye and the thyroid gland was observed to increase by using bismuth shielding. Among these, only the increase in the eye dose in CBCT was not statistically significant (P > 0.05). Conclusions: This study demonstrated higher thyroid and eye lens dose with the use of bismuth shielding in OPTG and CBCT scanning. However, due to the significantly decreased thyroid dose in PR, it may be recommended as an alternative to leaded shielding in periapical radiographic examinations. Fractal dimension (FD) analysis is a method used to numerically characterize the complexity of structures or tissues. After sinus lift procedures, the graft material gradually transforms into natural bone over time. This study aimed to evaluate the interpretability of this transformation by assessing changes in FD values. In this retrospective study, data from a total of 36 patients (42 hemimaxillae), including 13 females (17 hemimaxillae) and 23 males (25 hemimaxillae), were analyzed. Cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) images obtained preoperatively and at six months postoperatively from patients who underwent sinus lift surgery with graft placement in the maxillary molar region were included in the evaluation. The pre- and postoperative images were superimposed using anatomical reference points. Examination areas were determined on cross-sectional slices from the grafted and adjacent non-grafted bone areas (used as control) within the maxillary molar region. FD analysis was performed on these areas. FD values from the grafted and control bone regions at baseline and six months were recorded. Paired and independent sample t-tests were used for statistical analysis, with statistical significance set at p < 0.05. FD values derived from CBCT images showed a statistically significant difference between the initial state of the graft immediately after placement (G0) and its state six months postoperatively (G1) (p < 0.05). The mean FD values were 1.297 for G0 and 1.279 for G1. However, no significant difference was observed between the initial state (B0) and the six-month follow-up state (B1) of the trabecular bone in the posterior region used as a control (p > 0.05). The FD values in the G0 group showed minimal variation across gender and age groups, consistently ranging between 1.295 and 1.299. No significant differences in FD values were identified based on gender or age groups (p > 0.05). The findings of this study suggest that FD analysis may serve as a useful adjunctive tool for evaluating graft osteogenesis.
