Dr Kumutha Malar Vellasamy is an accomplished microbiologist at Universiti Malaya with more than 10 years’ experience in molecular microbiology, bacterial pathogenesis, and antimicrobial resistance. She obtained her PhD from Universiti Malaya in 2013. Her research focuses on understanding the genetic and phenotypic mechanisms that enable bacterial pathogens to cause disease, persist in hostile environments, and develop resistance to antimicrobial agents. She has extensive experience in applying molecular and experimental approaches to study clinically important bacteria. Dr Kumutha’s work integrates laboratory-based research with translational relevance, particularly in the areas of bacterial virulence, biofilm formation, and bacteriophage therapy. She has contributed to numerous studies involving Gram-negative pathogens and has played a key role in advancing knowledge on how microbial evolution influences infection outcomes and therapeutic responses. In addition to her research contributions, Dr Kumutha is actively involved in postgraduate training and supervision, mentoring students in microbiology and related biomedical sciences.
