Background: Cunninghamia lanceolata (C. lanceolata) is the main fast-growing timber species in southern China. As an alternative to conventional lighting systems, LED has been demonstrated to be an artificial flexible lighting source for commercial micropropagation. The application of LED can provide rapid propagation of C. lanceolata in vitro culture. Results: We applied two-factor randomized block design to study the effects of LED photoperiods and light qualities on the growth and chlorophyll fluorescence of C. lanceolata in vitro culture plantlets. In this study, plantlets were exposed to 20 μmol·m− 2·s− 1 irradiance for three photoperiods, 8, 16, and 24 h under the three composite lights, 88.9% red+ 11.1% blue (R/B), 80.0% red+ 10.0% blue+ 10.0% purple (R/B/P), 72.7% red+ 9.1% blue+ 9.1% purple+ 9.1% green (R/B/P/G), as well as white light (12.7% red+ 3.9% blue+ 83.4% green, W) as control. The results showed that: (1) Plant height, dry weight, rooting rate, average root number, length, surface area and volume, chlorophyll, and chlorophyll fluorescence parameters were significantly affected by photoperiods, light qualities and their interactions. (2) Plantlets subjected to photoperiod 16 h had longer root, higher height, rooting rate, root number, and the higher levels of chlorophyll, chlorophyll a/b, Y (II), qP, NPQ/4 and ETRII compared to photoperiods 8 h and 24 h, while Fv/Fm during photoperiod 16 h was lower than 8 h and 24 h. Plantlets exposed to R/B/P/G generated more root and presented higher chlorophyll, Fv/Fo, Y (II), qP, and ETRII than W during photoperiods 8 and 16 h. (3) Total chlorophyll content and ETRII were significant correlated with rooting rate, root length and root volume, while Fv/Fm and ETRII were significant correlated with plant height, average root number and root surface area. (4) 16-R/B/P/G is best for growing C. lanceolata plantlets in vitro. Conclusions: This study demonstrated the effectiveness of photoperiods and light qualities using LEDs for micropropagation of C. lanceolata. The best plantlets were harvested under 16-R/B/P/G treatment. And there was a correlation between the growth and the chlorophyll and chlorophyll fluorescence of their leaves under different photoperiod and light quality. These results can contribute to improve the micropropagation process of this species.

Introduction: Parashorea chinensis Wang Hsie (Pc) is an endangered tree species endemic to tropical and subtropical China. However, the acidic red soil areas where it is distributed generally face nutrient limitation. The study of the effects of mixed planting on soil biogeochemical processes contributes to the sustainable management and conservation of Pc.Methods: We selected pure and mixed stands of Pc and collected its rhizosphere and bulk soil samples to clarify the effect of mixed planting on the soil microbial community and the nutrient status. Results: The results showed that (1) All stands were strongly acidic phosphorus-deficient soils (pH < 4.0, available phosphorus <10.0 mg·kg−1). There was a significant rhizosphere aggregation effect for soil organic C, total and available N and K, microbial biomass, and inorganic P fraction. (2) The mixed planting significantly increased the soil water content, organic C, available nutrients, the activities of β-1,4-glucosidase and urease, and microbial biomass. The inorganic P fractions are more influenced by rhizosphere, while organic P fractions are more influenced by tree species composition. (3) Fungi and their ecological functions are more susceptible to tree species than bacteria are, and have higher community compositional complexity and α-diversity in mixed plantations. And mixed planting can improve network complexity among key microorganisms. (4) The correlation between soil microorganisms and environmental factors was significantly higher in mixed forests than in pure forests. Soil organic C, available N and P, microbial biomass C and N, β-1,4-glucosidase, and stable P fractions were the key environmental factors driving changes in fungal and bacterial communities. Conclusion: In conclusion, the mixed planting patterns are more advantageous than pure plantations in improving soil physicochemical properties, enhancing nutrient effectiveness, and promoting microbial activities and diversity, especially Pc mixed with Eucalyptus grandis × E. urophylla is more conducive to soil improvement and sustainable management, which provides practical references for relocation protection of endangered tree species and species selection and soil fertility management in mixed planting. In addition, the study highlighted the key role of rhizosphere microenvironment in soil nutrient cycling and microbial community structure, which provides new perspectives for a deeper understanding of soil-microbe-plant interaction mechanisms.

Parashorea chinensis, an endemic tree species in China’s tropical rainforests, holds ecological and economic importance. Challenges like low resistance, poor quality, and low survival rates hinder its successful cultivation. This study explores the potential of autumn potassium fertilization on Parashorea seedlings from two provenances (Napo and Tianyang). The treatments included no fertilizer (CK-1), a single application of 160 mg K·plant−1 (CK-2), and various potassium levels K1, K2, K3, K4, K5, and K6 (corresponding to 0, 40, 80, 160, 320, and 640 mg·K·plant−1, respectively) combined with nitrogen (200 mg·plant−1) and phosphorus (80 mg·plant−1) fertilization. The findings indicate that autumn potassium application, in conjunction with nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) fertilization, significantly enhances seedling height and biomass in both provenances, resulting in an average increase of 101% and 89% under the K4 treatment compared to CK-1 and CK-2, comparatively. Both Napo and Tianyang provenances exhibited distinct responses in photosynthetic rate (2.70 μmol·m−2·s−1 and 1.97 μmol·m−2·s−1, respectively) and stomatal conductance (0.042 mol·m−2·s−1 and 0.029 mol·m−2·s−1, respectively) to the K4 treatment, which proved most effective. The chlorophyll content was significantly higher for Napo provenance with the K3 treatment (74.31%, 58.99%), while for Tianyang, it was higher with the K4 treatment (41.48%, 17.36%), compared to CK-1 and CK-2, respectively. Antioxidant enzymes activity, osmoregulatory capacity, and malondialdehyde content all exhibited variations with potassium application levels, with the K4 treatment offering significant benefits. In Napo provenance, lignin (199.82 mg·g−1) and cellulose (252.38 mg·g−1) peaked at K4, while Tianyang exhibited variation, higher lignin (184.25 mg·g−1) at K3, and cellulose (257.73 mg·g−1) at K4. Nutrient content analysis demonstrates that the K4 treatment enhances nutrient absorption and storage, increasing total N (21.56 mg·kg−1), P (4.69 mg·kg−1), and K (13.49 mg·kg−1) content. A comprehensive analysis reveals that the K4 treatment yields the highest quality scores (1.87, 1.85) and membership values (0.82, 0.68) for both Napo and Tianyang seedlings, with Napo seedlings outperforming their Tianyang provenance. Thus, treatment K4 underscores the effectiveness of autumn potassium applications for robust seedling cultivation and adaptation, offering valuable insights for sustainable cultivation practices.

The leaves of Magnoliaceae family plants contain abundant essential oils (EOs), and these species can be used in many fields due to their high industrial, medicinal, and ornamental values. This study aims to identify the main compounds of the EOs from the leaves of five common Magnoliaceae species (Michelia maudiae, Michelia hedyosperma, Michelia macclurei, Manglietia lucida, Manglietia conifer) using hydrodistillation, GC–MS analysis, and in vitro tests. Additionally, the antioxidant and antibacterial activities of the EOs were also evaluated. The results show that 151 compounds were identified across five species, with sesquiterpenes being dominant. Some key compounds (such as β-caryophyllene, δ-amorphene, β-guaiene, globulol, and β-acorenol) were common among all the species, highlighting their crucial roles in plant physiology and resilience. Other compounds (like valeranone and nerolidol in M. maudiae and β-elemene in M. macclurei) were specific, indicating different functions. Among the five species, the essential oil of M. macclurei contains β-elemene and nerolidyl acetate, and it has the weakest antioxidant activity (IC50 value: 2918.61~21,341.98 μg/mL) but the strongest antibacterial activity (inhibition zone diameter: 8.55 ± 0.93~22.92 ± 0.46 mm; LC50 value: 0.02~0.78 mg/mL). Meanwhile, the EO of M. maudiae demonstrated the best antioxidant activity (the IC50 value was 1283.58~6258.32 μg/mL) and the second-best antibacterial activity (the inhibition zone diameter ranged from 7.61 ± 0.02 to 26.92 ± 0.46 mm, and the LC50 value was 0.03~2.28 mg/mL). Overall, the EO of M. maudiae had the best comprehensive performance. Therefore, the EOs of M. macclurei and M. maudiae showed different performances in biological activity categories, and they could be developed and used in different fields, with the possibility of discovering new applications. This brings inspiration to the potential commercial and industrial uses of sesquiterpenes in Magnoliaceae.

Introduction: Soil physicochemical properties and nutrient composition play a significant role in shaping microbial communities, and facilitating soil phosphorus (P) transformation. However, studies on the mechanisms of interactions between P transformation characteristics and rhizosphere microbial diversity in P-deficient soils on longer time scales are still limited. Methods: In this study, rhizosphere soils were collected from a pure plantation of Parashorea chinensis (P. chinensis) at six stand ages in the subtropical China, and the dynamic transformation characteristics of microbial diversity and P fractions were analyzed to reveal the variation of their interactions with age. Results: Our findings revealed that the rhizosphere soils across stand ages were in a strongly acidic and P-deficient state, with pH values ranging from 3.4 to 4.6, and available P contents ranging from 2.6 to 7.9 mg·kg-1. The adsorption of P by Fe3+ and presence of high levels of steady-state organic P highly restricted the availability of P in soil. On long time scales, acid phosphatase activity and microbial biomass P were the main drivers of P activation. Moreover, pH, available P, and ammonium nitrogen were identified as key factors driving microbial community diversity. As stand age increased, most of the nutrient content indicators firstly increased and then decreased, the conversion of other forms of P to bio-available P became difficult, P availability and soil fertility began to decline. However, bacteria were still able to maintain stable species abundance and diversity. In contrast, stand age had a greater effect on the diversity of the fungal community than on the bacteria. The Shannon and Simpson indices varied by 4.81 and 0.70 for the fungi, respectively, compared to only 1.91 and 0.06 for the bacteria. Microorganisms play a dominant role in the development of their relationship with soil P.Discussion: In conclusion, rhizosphere microorganisms in P. chinensis plantations gradually adapt to the acidic, low P environment over time. This adaptation is conducive to maintaining P bioeffectiveness and alleviating P limitation.
