Perforated materials are widely used in various fields, including in medicine, for example, in trays for placing and storing cutting tools and for sterilizing disposable materials. Currently, the effective elastic modulus of orthopedic plates is higher than the effective elastic modulus of human bone tissue (the effective elastic modulus of bone ranges between 10 and 30 GPa, depending on the type of bone). This difference in effective elastic modulus leads to the phenomenon known as the stress shielding effect, where the bone experiences insufficient mechanical loading. One potential approach to influence the effective elastic modulus of orthopedic plates is through perforations in their design. Stainless steel 316L has garnered significant interest among medical engineering specialists due to its lower weight, higher strength, and superior biocompatibility. The elastic properties of perforated constructions are influenced by their internal quality, dimensions, shapes, and the overall perforation area, making their study important. An experiment was conducted on perforated plates of 316L stainless steel with perforation areas ranging from 3% to 20%. Increasing the perforation area in perforated 316L stainless steel plates (perforated plates had dimensions of 50 mm in height, 20 mm in width, and 1 mm in thickness; hole diameter of 1 mm; and pitch between the holes of 2, 3, 4, and 5 mm) from 3% to 20% resulted in a decrease in Young’s modulus of the perforated plates from 199 GPa to 147.8 GPa, determined using a non-destructive method for determining resonant frequencies using a laser vibrometer. A three-point bending test on the perforated plates confirmed these findings, demonstrating a consistent trend of decreasing Young’s modulus with increasing perforation area, from 194.4 GPa at 3.14% to 142.6 GPa at 19.63%. The three-point bending method was also employed in this study to determine the Young’s modulus of the perforated plates in order to reinforce the obtained results on the elastic properties by determining the resonance frequencies with a laser vibrometer. It was discovered that the Young’s modulus of a perforated plate cannot be determined solely by the perforation area, as it depends on both the perforation diameter and the pitch between the perforations. In addition, finite element method (FEM) simulations were conducted, revealing that increasing perforation diameter and decreasing pitch significantly reduce the Young’s modulus—with values dropping from 201.5 GPa to 72.6 GPa across various configurations.

Freezing and thawing affect the structural integrity and quality of meat, yet these processes remain difficult to monitor due to spatial temperature gradients and non-uniform phase transitions. This study investigates the ability of ultrasound to detect dynamic freezing and thawing events in pork tissues with different fat contents. Specimens of water, lean meat, marbled meat, layered lean–fat structures, and lard were subjected to controlled freeze–thaw cycles while ultrasonic signals and internal temperatures were continuously monitored. Consistent amplitude drops in the megahertz range at entering the freezing phase formed characteristic signal patterns that differed sharply between lean and fatty tissues. Lean meat, dominated by water content, exhibited rapid signal loss at the onset of ice crystallization and a clear recovery of amplitude once fully frozen. Fat-rich tissues demonstrated prolonged attenuation and near disappearance of high-frequency signals, with incomplete recovery even at deep-frozen states. A jump of ultrasound velocity from 1.4–1.6 km/s in a warm state to 2.6–3.7 km/s in a frozen state indicated complete freezing. Hysteresis between temperature readings and actual phase transition moments was found. Distinct ultrasonic freeze–thaw signatures reflecting tissue composition suggest a novel approach for monitoring the true onset and completion of freezing and thawing in meat.

Perforated cylindrical shaped metal plates are used with high efficiency in the manufacture of deflectors, components of cooling systems, wind tunnels, climatic chambers, filters, and cylindrical implants. This is particularly important for lightweight cylindrical structures, where even minor changes in stiffness can affect structural strength. One of the most important parameters determining the mechanical behavior of such structures is the effective elastic modulus of the perforated element which characterizes its resistance to deformation. The research involves plates made of stainless steel 304 alloy, where perforations were created using the laser-cutting method. The cylindrical shape of the samples with height 50 mm, thickness 1 mm, and diameter 48 mm of each specimen was obtained using metal rolling and welding techniques. To determine the effective elastic modulus, a non-destructive material property evaluation method was applied by solving an inverse problem. In this research, resonance frequencies were determined using a laser vibrometer and a full factorial experimental plan was developed. Physical samples were digitized into 3D models using 3D scanning technology. To evaluate the accuracy of the applied finite element numerical model, its convergence analysis was performed. Numerical results were approximated using the least-squares method, while the effective elastic modulus was calculated by formulating and minimizing the error functional between experimental and numerical eigenfrequencies. The results indicate that increasing the relative perforation area from 0% to 50.24% leads to a decrease in the effective elastic modulus from 184.76 GPa to 50.69 GPa, confirming that increasing the perforation area in a stainless steel 304 cylinder reduces its elastic properties. The observed reduction in resonance frequencies and elastic properties is primarily due to the stiffness decrease caused by the higher perforation volume.

Thin-walled and sheet materials with regular through holes (perforation) have wide practical application in various fields, including in medicine for the manufacture of implants, trays for placing and storing cutting instruments, sterilization of consumables. Perforated metal materials (PMM), primarily made of titanium and stainless steel, are of the most attention to specialists in the field of medical engineering, since they are characterized by lower weight, high strength and biomechanical compatibility. The mechanical characteristics of PMM are determined by the initial properties of the material, the dimensions of the sheet or tape, the shape and total area of the perforation. If selected correctly, dimensions and area of the perforations can provide optimal flexibility and plasticity with a significant reduction in the weight of the implant. This paper presents properties of perforated plates made of stainless steel, obtained by non-destructive methods. In particular, the dependences of the Lamb wave velocities at different frequencies on the specific total area of the plate’s perforation are shown. The data of elastic properties dependences on the perforation area. The data of microscopic studies of changes in the quality of holes obtained by laser cutting are also presented.
