Aims: This study aimed to assess nursing workload in Cardiac Intensive Care Unit (CICU) after three cardiothoracic surgery procedures during first four postoperative days using Nursing Activities Score (NAS) and Nine Equivalents of Nursing Manpower Use Score (NEMS) systems, to compare their performance for that purpose and to investigate association between nursing workload and type of surgery.Design: A comparative study. Methods: The research environment includes CICU of the University Hospital for Cardiovascular Diseases in Serbia. A total of 808 patients who underwent coronary, valvular, or combined surgery, resulting in 2282 filled NAS and NEMS pairs chart. Statistical analysis was performed using SPSS‐19. The correlation between NAS and NEMS was tested by Spearman's correlation coefficient. Differences were considered statistically significant at p < 0.05.Results: The lowest median of cumulative NAS 176 (175‐257) and NEMS 76 (64‐91) had coronary surgery patients, the highest NAS 224.5 (178‐334.5) and NEMS 83 (69‐121) had those with combined surgery; this difference was statistically significant (p < 0.001). The median of both scores decreased after surgery, with the following values from the first to the fourth postoperative day: NAS from 104 (102‐105) to 81 (74‐85) and NEMS from 46 (42–46) to 30 (30–37). The difference in mean values of both scores between the first and the fourth postoperative day was statistically significant (p < 0.001). NAS and NEMS were in a positive, strong correlation (r = 0.913; p < 0.005).Conclusion: Both scores can be used to measure nursing workload, identify the required number of nurses in CICU, and support task allocation. NAS may have an advantage because it better describes extensive postoperative monitoring and care needed for cardiac surgery patients. Nursing workload is associated with type of surgery, with the highest workload measured in patients who underwent combined surgery procedure and on the first postoperative day.

Background/Objectives: Multiple sclerosis is characterised by the manifestation of heterogeneous symptoms that affect daily functioning. Patients face physical impairment, psychological problems and socioeconomic changes. Depending on the form of the disease, they may have different needs, which are often unsatisfied and could be overcome by including palliative care in the treatment. Despite the above, not enough is known about this population’s needs for palliative care. This cross-sectional study aimed to identify the need for palliative care and assess the functional dependence level in daily living activities in patients with multiple sclerosis. Methods: The sample consisted of 120 patients from the Neurology Clinic of the University Clinical Center of Vojvodina, Serbia. The following research instruments were used: a General questionnaire, Sheffield Profile for Assessment and Referral for Care, Multiple Sclerosis Impact Scale and Barthel Index. Results: The need for palliative care was expressed by 36.7% of patients, who expressed the most concern for the physical symptoms, independence and activity domains. Also, it was determined that the disease prevents patients from doing demanding physical tasks and that they are worried about multiple sclerosis. Almost a quarter of patients have had complete/severe dependence on other persons in performing daily activities. Conclusions: The most frequently reported physical symptoms by patients with MS were weakness, bladder problems, fatigue and different levels of dependence, while concerns related to sexual health, low mood and anxiety emerged as key challenges in the psychological domain. These findings underscore the importance of conducting needs assessments to guide the development of an appropriate palliative care model for MS patients.

BACKGROUND: The malunited distal radius fracture is commonly characterized by loss of volar tilt, radial inclination and radial height. This anatomical mismatch profoundly alters the wrist biomechanics. A corrective osteotomy is designed to precisely restore the alignment of the articular surface. AIM: This study assessed the functional results and radiographic alignment after distal radius corrective osteotomy. METHODS: Between January 2020 and October 2025, all distal radius corrective osteotomies performed at a single center were included, with functional outcomes assessed using the Patient-Rated Wrist Evaluation (PRWE) score. Further parameters included articular alignment, fracture type, ulnar styloid fracture presence, time to union, bone graft usage and complications. RESULTS: In our study 23patients were included with a median age of 47.5years (IQR34–54). The median follow-up time was 3years. The median PRWE score observed was 22.5 (IQR0.75–36.5). Bone union was achieved in a median time of 8.5weeks (IQR6–10). Radial inclination improved by a mean of 8.0° (SD6.5). Ulnar variance improved by a mean of 2.87mm (SD 2.83), and radial length improved by a mean of 3.9 mm (SD2.63). Dorsal angulated malunions improved from a mean of 24.6° (SD12.1) to dorsal angulation of 4.1° (SD9.8). Five complications necessitating further treatment were diagnosed. CONCLUSIONS: Corrective osteotomy is an effective treatment for symptomatic distal radius malunion, leading to good functional outcomes and improved radiographic alignment. Our analysis suggests that the PRWE score interpretation benefits from age-group stratification. PRWE results, in severe deformities, remain unaffected by the presence of an associated ulnar styloid fracture. If significant dorsal angulation is present, patient satisfaction improves with even a modest postoperative residual dorsal angulation.
Introduction. The Nursing Activities Score is used to quantify, assess, and identify the workload of nurses in intensive care units, and is widely considered a very effective, simple, standardized measurement scale, sufficiently detailed to be implemented in everyday hospital practice. The aim of the study is to evaluate the workload of nurses using the results of the Nursing Activities Score and compare the nurse-to-patient ratio with regulations in our country. Material and Methods. The study included 131 patients who underwent cardiac surgery in the period from November 1 to November 30, 2021. Surgical data and corresponding Nursing Activities Score values were obtained from hospital information system. In the intensive care unit, nursing activities were monitored and scored daily. Results. Using the Nursing Activities Score, 344 measurements were recorded in the study sample. The mean Nursing Activity Score was 88.27 ? 3.63, and the highest was 102.97 ? 1.89 on the first postoperative day. The nurse-to-patient ratio was 1.03:1 on the first postoperative day, and about 0.8:1 on the second and third postoperative days. There was a statistically significant difference in the mean Nursing Activities Score between postoperative days (p < 0.0005) between the first and second day (102.96 vs. 79.46) and the first and third day (103.46 vs. 83.58). Conclusion. On the first postoperative day, the optimal number of nurses according to the Nursing Activities Score is higher compared to the State Regulations, while for the rest of the days in the intensive care unit the nurse-to-patient ratio corresponds to the regulations.
