The failure of a rolling bearing may cause the shutdown of mechanical equipment and even induce catastrophic accidents, resulting in tremendous economic losses and a severely negative impact on society. Fault diagnosis of rolling bearings becomes an important topic with much attention from researchers and industrial pioneers. There are an increasing number of publications on this topic. However, there is a lack of a comprehensive survey of existing works from the perspectives of fault detection and fault type recognition in rolling bearings using vibration signals. Therefore, this paper reviews recent fault detection and fault type recognition methods using vibration signals. First, it provides an overview of fault diagnosis of rolling bearings and typical fault types. Then, existing fault diagnosis methods are categorized into fault detection methods and fault type recognition methods, which are separately revised and discussed. Finally, a summary of existing datasets, limitations/challenges of existing methods, and future directions are presented to provide more guidance for researchers who are interested in this field. Overall, this survey paper conducts a review and analysis of the methods used to diagnose rolling bearing faults and provide comprehensive guidance for researchers in this field.

Natural wind is stochastic, being characterized by its speed and direction which change randomly and frequently. Because of the certain lag in control systems and the yaw body itself, wind turbines cannot be accurately aligned toward the wind direction when the wind speed and wind direction change frequently. Thus, wind turbines often suffer from a series of engineering issues during operation, including frequent yaw, vibration overruns and downtime. This paper aims to study the effects of yaw error on wind turbine running characteristics at different wind speeds and control stages by establishing a wind turbine model, yaw error model and the equivalent wind speed model that includes the wind shear and tower shadow effects. Formulas for the relevant effect coefficients Tc, Sc and Pc were derived. The simulation results indicate that the effects of the aerodynamic torque, rotor speed and power output due to yaw error at different running stages are different and that the effect rules for each coefficient are not identical when the yaw error varies. These results may provide theoretical support for optimizing the yaw control strategies for each stage to increase the running stability of wind turbines and the utilization rate of wind energy.

In recent years, applications of artificial intelligence (AI) techniques in fault diagnosis of high-voltage circuit breakers (HVCBs) have gained wide attention. In real applications, how-ever, HVCBs work in the normal state most of the time. Therefore, the problem of imbalanced monitoring data is prevalent, which threatens the generalization capability of AI-based diagnosis methods, resulting in poor fault diagnostic performance. To address this problem, an oversampling method called Density-weighted Minority Oversampling (DWMO) was proposed to balance monitoring data in this study. Experimental results on HVCB monitoring data with various imbalance ratios show that DWMO can improve the diagnostic performance of AI techniques and outperformed other commonly used oversampling methods including Synthetic Minority Oversampling Technique (SMOTE), Borderline-SMOTE, Adaptive Synthetic Sampling Approach, and Majority Weighted Minority Oversampling Technique.

Kurtogram can adaptively select the resonant frequency band, and then the characteristic fault frequency can be obtained by analyzing the selected band. However, the kurtogram is easily affected by random impulses and noise. In recent years, improvements to kurtogram have been concentrated on two aspects: (a) the decomposition method of the frequency band; and (b) the selection index of the optimal frequency band. In this article, a new method called Teager Energy Entropy Ratio Gram (TEERgram) is proposed. The TEER algorithm takes the wavelet packet transform (WPT) as the signal frequency band decomposition method, which can adaptively segment the frequency band and control the noise. At the same time, Teager Energy Entropy Ratio (TEER) is proposed as a computing index for wavelet packet subbands. WPT has better decomposition properties than traditional finite impulse response (FIR) filtering and Fourier decomposition in the kurtogram algorithm. At the same time, TEER has better performance than the envelope spectrum or even the square envelope spectrum. Therefore, the TEERgram method can accurately identify the resonant frequency band under strong background noise. The effectiveness of the proposed method is verified by simulation and experimental analysis.

Mechanical fault diagnosis of a circuit breaker can help improve the reliability of power systems. Therefore, a new method based on multiscale entropy (MSE) and the support vector machine (SVM) is proposed to diagnose the fault in high voltage circuit breakers. First, Variational Mode Decomposition (VMD) is used to process the high voltage circuit breaker’s vibration signals, and the reconstructed signal can eliminate the effect of noise. Second, the multiscale entropy of the reconstructed signal is calculated and selected as a feature vector. Finally, based on the feature vector, the fault identification and classification are realized by SVM. The feature vector constructed by multiscale entropy is compared with other feature vectors to illustrate the superiority of the proposed method. Through experimentation on a 35 kV SF6 circuit breaker, the feasibility and applicability of the proposed method for fault diagnosis are verified.
