In this review, we provide a short overview of the Molecular Dynamics (MD) method and how it can be used to model the water splitting process in photoelectrochemical hydrogen production. We cover classical non-reactive and reactive MD techniques as well as multiscale extensions combining classical MD with quantum chemical and continuum methods. Selected examples of MD investigations of various aqueous semiconductor interfaces with a special focus on TiO2 are discussed. Finally, we identify gaps in the current state-of-the-art where further developments will be needed for better utilization of MD techniques in the field of water splitting.

As society moves towards a preventative approach to healthcare, there is growing interest in scientific research involving technology that can monitor and prevent adverse health outcomes. The primary objective of this paper is to develop an Internet of Things (IoT) wearable system based on Fried’s phenotype that is capable of detecting frailty. To determine user requirements, the system’s architecture was designed based on the findings of a questionnaire administered to individuals confirmed to be frail. A functional prototype was successfully developed and tested under real-world conditions. This paper introduces the methodology that was used to analyze the data collected from the prototype. It proposes an interdisciplinary approach to interpret wearable sensor data, providing a comprehensive overview through both visual representations and computational analyses facilitated by machine learning models. The findings of these analyses offer insights into the ways in which different types of activities can be classified and quantified as part of an overall physical activity level, which is recognized as an important indicator of frailty. The results provide the foundations for a new generation of affordable and non-intrusive systems able to detect and assess early signs of frailty.

In this paper, we describe an actuator-based EMDR (eye movement desensitization and reprocessing) virtual assistant system that can be used for the treatment of participants with traumatic memories. EMDR is a psychological therapy designed to treat emotional distress caused by a traumatic event from the past, most frequently in post-traumatic stress disorder treatment. We implemented a system based on video, tactile, and audio actuators which includes an artificial intelligence chatbot, making the system capable of acting autonomously. We tested the system on a sample of 31 participants. Our results showed the efficiency of the EMDR virtual assistant system in reducing anxiety, distress, and negative cognitions and emotions associated with the traumatic memory. There are no such systems reported in the existing literature. Through the present research, we fill this gap by describing a system that can be used by patients with traumatic memories.

In geriatric healthcare, missing data pose significant challenges, especially in systems used for frailty monitoring in elderly individuals. This study explores advanced imputation techniques used to enhance data quality and maintain model performance in a system designed to detect frailty insights. We introduce missing data mechanisms—Missing Completely at Random (MCAR), Missing at Random (MAR), and Missing Not at Random (MNAR)—into a dataset collected from smart bracelets, simulating real-world conditions. Imputation methods, including Expectation–Maximization (EM), matrix completion, Bayesian networks, K-Nearest Neighbors (KNN), Support Vector Machines (SVMs), Generative Adversarial Imputation Networks (GAINs), Variational Autoencoder (VAE), and GRU-D, were evaluated based on normalized Mean Squared Error (MSE), Mean Absolute Error (MAE), and R2 metrics. The results demonstrate that KNN and SVM consistently outperform other methods across all three mechanisms due to their ability to adapt to diverse patterns of missingness. Specifically, KNN and SVM excel in MAR conditions by leveraging observed data relationships to accurately infer missing values, while their robustness to randomness enables superior performance under MCAR scenarios. In MNAR contexts, KNN and SVM effectively handle unobserved dependencies by identifying underlying patterns in the data, outperforming methods like GRU-D and VAE. These findings highlight the importance of selecting imputation methods based on the characteristics of missing data mechanisms, emphasizing the versatility and reliability of KNN and SVM in healthcare applications. This study advocates for hybrid approaches in healthcare applications like the cINnAMON project, which supports elderly individuals at risk of frailty through non-intrusive home monitoring systems.

We present i-Light, a cyber-physical platform that aims to help older adults to live safely within their own homes. The system is the result of an international research project funded by the European Union and is comprised of a custom developed wireless sensor network together with software services that provide continuous monitoring, reporting and real-time alerting capabilities. The principal innovation proposed within the project regards implementation of the hardware components in the form of intelligent luminaires with inbuilt sensing and communication capabilities. Custom luminaires provide indoor localisation and environment sensing, are cost-effective and are designed to replace the lighting infrastructure of the deployment location without prior mapping or fingerprinting. We evaluate the system within a home and show that it achieves localisation accuracy sufficient for room-level detection. We present the communication infrastructure, and detail how the software services can be configured and used for visualisation, reporting and real-time alerting.

Early detection of frailty is one of the main challenges in the world we live in. Being aware of physiologic and behavior changes can predict and prevent the onset of mental complications for older people. By using modern technologies, one can get insights, which may help detection of different pathologies. In this paper, preliminary results for a novel system to detect early signs of frailty are presented. A prototype was developed and tested in laboratory conditions after requirements and functional capabilities were defined. The main advantages of the proposed architecture are the usage of commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) components and custom mechanisms of security to assure a high level of confidentiality and integrity of user-specific data. Other original elements are its easy-to-use and non-intrusive characteristics.
