In addition to the fact that most renewable energies such as solar and wind energy have become more competitive in the global energy market, thanks to the great development in conversion technologies, it believes that renewable energy can play a crucial role in global environmental issues. However, in Palestine, the situation is different from anywhere else; renewable energy is not only an economic option, but an absolute necessity to get out of the energy crisis that Palestinian cities suffer from long years ago and continue nowadays. The cornerstone of the present research is focusing on the availability of renewable energy resources in Jenin Governorate (JG)—West Bank (WB)—Palestine. Two-year time-series of hourly solar, wind, biomass, and 1-year hourly electrical load data are used in the analysis in this paper. The energy potentials were estimated using System Advisor Model software (SAM), and the optimum combination and sizing of the hybrid renewable energy system were determined using Hybrid Optimization of Multiple Energy Resources (HOMER). The proposed Hybrid Renewable Energy System (HRES) consists of an 80 MW PV solar field, 66 MW wind farm, and 50 MW biomass system with an initial investment of $323 M. The proposed HRES generates 389 GWh/yr and is enough to meet 100% of the electrical demand of JG (372 GWh/yr) with excess in electricity generation of about 4.57% and the unmeet electric load is about 109.6 MWh/yr which is equivalent to less than 2 h off in a year. The estimated Levelized Cost of Energy (LCOE) was found as 0.313 $/kWh.

DG-integrated distribution system planning is an imperative issue since the installing of distributed generations (DGs) has many effects on the network operation characteristics, which might cause significant impacts on the system performance. One of the most important characteristics that mostly varies because of the installation of DG units is the power losses. The parameters affecting the value of the power losses are number, location, capacity, and power factor of the DG units. In this paper, a new analytical approach is proposed for optimally installing DGs to minimize power loss in distribution networks. Different parameters of DG are considered and evaluated in order to achieve a high loss reduction in the electrical distribution networks. The algorithm of the proposed approach has been implemented using MATLAB software and has been tested and investigated on 12-bus, 33-bus, and 69-bus IEEE distribution test systems. The results show that the proposed approach can provide an accurate solution via simple algorithm without using exhaustive process of power flow computations.

The article presents a comparative analysis of phasor RMS and EMT models for grid-forming converters. The specific aspects related to modelling and implementation in Simscape Electrical of MATLAB/Simulink are discussed in detail for both time-domains. The comparison between the implementations is performed taking into examination three representative and widely studied grid-forming schemes: the virtual synchronous machine, the power-synchronization control and the feedforward angle control. For the analysis, different power system dynamics are emulated, and different types of transient phenomena are applied in the simulation models. The considered events include frequency transients, phase jumps and short-circuit faults. The comparative analysis suggests specific indications regarding limitations and suitability of phasor RMS and EMT models for grid-forming converters, contributing to the definition of possible guidelines for a proper selection of the modelling domain.

The recent changes in power network structure, development in green energy technologies and increased attention on environmental concerns have led to increase the installation of renewable energy based distributed generations (DG) in distribution networks. The increasing penetration of distributed generation in the distribution power system creates new technical and economical challenges; protection is one important topic of these challenges. High penetration of DG will have unfavorable impact on the traditional protection methods; the impact depends on the number, location and size of injected DG. To ensure safe and selective protection devices coordination, the impact of DG should be taken into account when planning DG interconnection. This paper focuses on investigating the impact of DG on the system protection coordination in radial distribution network; also restrictions of DG capacity is presented in this work in order to keep traditional protection scheme for distribution network unchanged; detailed simulations using MATLAB and PowerWorld simulator are conducted.

In the recent years, with the concept of Smart Grid, there are a great interest in integration of renewable energy based distributed generation (DG) units at distribution level. Along with a number of benefits, penetration of DG units in the distribution system imposes some serious challenges; protection requirements turns up as one of the most critical challenge in DG integration. In this paper the possibility and the potentiality of occurring mis-coordination between protection devices in radial distribution network is studied. The impacts of protection devices coordination on DG capacity are investigated. The penetration level, number, and location of interconnected DGs are used as parameters in order to verify the effects of DG on fault current level. The threshold value of DG capacity is presented while the existing protection scheme for distribution network can be maintained. Detailed simulations using MATLAB and PowerWorld simulators are inserted in order to explain and verify the results.

The paper focuses on thermography as a useful investigation tool for diagnosis, detection and prevention of failures of photovoltaic modules. The paper describes the faults detectable by thermographic investigations and how to conduct these investigantions. Then the results of some analyses conducted on a photovoltaic field are presented. The investigations made possible to identify faulty modules with hot spots by measuring localized superheat due to the presence of concentrated deposits on the exposed surface of the module and the superheating due to the presence of sand/dust deposits distributed on a significant portion of the module surface. The thermographic investigations can be used to prevent conditions that can lead to failures. These surveys can, in fact, be used to identify the need for maintenance or cleaning modules in order to reduce localized heating that would reduce the useful life of panels.
