Cognitive radio (CR) is considered as a key technology to overcome the problem of spectrum scarcity for wireless applications by the researchers. Efficient spectrum utilization is the most important and core purpose of CR systems after successful spectrum sensing. In this paper, different cases are investigated in which secondary users (SUs) can transmit their data after declaring the primary user (PU) is absent as a result of spectrum sensing. SU’s transmission in some of these cases may lead to interference in PU’s communication, which may cause inefficient spectrum utilization. In this paper, an optimization problem is formulated to optimize the sensing time that maximizes the spectrum utilization efficiency (SUE) under the constraints of high target detection probability and low probability of interference to PU. A trade-off between sensing time and spectrum utilization efficiency is shown in a given time frame for all possible cases. Theoretical and simulation results of proposed system show good match to each others. Finally proposed system is compared with conventional systems and 45% better performance in terms of optimal sensing time is achieved with maximum SUE.

Minced meat substitution is one of the most common frauds which not only affects consumer health but impacts their lifestyles and religious customs as well. A number of methods have been proposed to overcome these frauds; however, these mostly rely on laboratory measures and are often subject to human error. Therefore, this study proposes novel hyperspectral imaging (400–1000 nm) based non-destructive isos-bestic myoglobin (Mb) spectral features for minced meat classification. A total of 60 minced meat spectral cubes were pre-processed using true-color image formulation to extract regions of interest, which were further normalized using the Savitzky–Golay filtering technique. The proposed pipeline outperformed several state-of-the-art methods by achieving an average accuracy of 88.88%.

This paper presents the local mean decomposition (LMD) integrated with multi-scale permutation entropy (MPE), also known as LMD-MPE, to investigate the rolling element bearing (REB) fault diagnosis from measured vibration signals. First, the LMD decomposed the vibration data or acceleration measurement into separate product functions that are composed of both amplitude and frequency modulation. MPE then calculated the statistical permutation entropy from the product functions to extract the nonlinear features to assess and classify the condition of the healthy and damaged REB system. The comparative experimental results of the conventional LMD-based multi-scale entropy and MPE were presented to verify the authenticity of the proposed technique. The study found that LMD-MPE’s integrated approach provides reliable, damage-sensitive features when analyzing the bearing condition. The results of REB experimental datasets show that the proposed approach yields more vigorous outcomes than existing methods.

Leukemia is one of the most terminal types of blood cancer, and many people suffer from it every year. White blood cells (WBCs) have a significant association with leukemia diagnosis. Research studies reported that leukemia brings changes in WBC count and morphology. WBC accurate segmentation enables to detect morphology and WBC count which consequently helps in the diagnosis and prognosis of leukemia. Manual WBC assessment methods are tedious, subjective, and less accurate. To overcome these problems, we propose a multi-scale information fusion network (MIF-Net) for WBC segmentation. MIF-Net is a shallow architecture with internal and external spatial information fusion mechanisms. In WBC images, the cytoplasm is with low contrast compared to the background, whereas nuclei shape can be complex with an indistinctive boundary for some cases, therefore accurate segmentation becomes challenging. Spatial features in the initial layers of the network include fine boundary information and MIF-Net splits and propagates this boundary information on multi-scale for external information fusion. Multi-scale information fusion in our network helps in preserving boundary information and contributes to segmentation performance improvement. MIF-Net also uses internal information fusion after intervals for feature empowerment in different stages of the network. We evaluated our network for four publicly available datasets and achieved state-of-the-art segmentation performance. In addition, the proposed architecture exhibits superior computational efficiency by using only 2.67 million trainable parameters.

Assisted reproductive technology is helping humans by addressing infertility using different medical procedures that help in a successful pregnancy. In vitro fertilization (IVF) is one of those assisted reproduction methods in which the sperm and eggs are combined outside the human body in a specialized environment and kept for growth. Assisted reproductive technology is helping humans by addressing infertility using different medical procedures that help in a successful pregnancy. The morphology of the embryological components is highly related to the success of the assisted reproduction procedure. In approximately 3–5 days, the embryo transforms into the blastocyst. To prevent the multiple-birth risk and to increase the chance of pregnancy the embryologist manually analyzes the blastocyst components and selects valuable embryos to transfer to the women’s uterus. The manual microscopic analysis of blastocyst components, such as trophectoderm, zona pellucida, blastocoel, and inner cell mass, is time-consuming and requires keen expertise to select a viable embryo. Artificial intelligence is easing medical procedures by the successful implementation of deep learning algorithms that mimic the medical doctor’s knowledge to provide a better diagnostic procedure that helps in reducing the diagnostic burden. The deep learning-based automatic detection of these blastocyst components can help to analyze the morphological properties to select viable embryos. This research presents a deep learning-based embryo component segmentation network (ECS-Net) that accurately detects trophectoderm, zona pellucida, blastocoel, and inner cell mass for embryological analysis. The proposed method (ECS-Net) is based on a shallow deep segmentation network that uses two separate streams produced by a base convolutional block and a depth-wise separable convolutional block. Both streams are densely concatenated in combination with two dense skip paths to produce powerful features before and after upsampling. The proposed ECS-Net is evaluated on a publicly available microscopic blastocyst image dataset, the experimental segmentation results confirm the efficacy of the proposed method. The proposed ECS-Net is providing a mean Jaccard Index (Mean JI) of 85.93% for embryological analysis.
