The logistic distribution has a prominent role in the theory and practice of statistics. We introduce a new family of continuous distributions generated from a logistic random variable called the logistic-X family. Its density function can be symmetrical, left-skewed, right-skewed, and reversed-J shaped, and can have increasing, decreasing, bathtub, and upside-down bathtub hazard rates shaped. Further, it can be expressed as a linear combination of exponentiated densities based on the same baseline distribution. We derive explicit expressions for the ordinary and incomplete moments, quantile and generating functions, Bonferroni and Lorenz curves, Shannon entropy, and order statistics. The model parameters are estimated by the method of maximum likelihood and the observed information matrix is determined. We also investigate the properties of one special model, the logistic-Fréchet distribution, and illustrate its importance by means of two applications to real data sets.

We propose a new family of continuous distributions called the odd generalized exponential family, whose hazard rate could be increasing, decreasing, J, reversed-J, bathtub and upside-down bathtub. It includes as a special case the widely known exponentiated-Weibull distribution. We present and discuss three special models in the family. Its density function can be expressed as a mixture of exponentiated densities based on the same baseline distribution. We derive explicit expressions for the ordinary and incomplete moments, quantile and generating functions, Bonferroni and Lorenz curves, Shannon and Rényi entropies and order statistics. For the first time, we obtain the generating function of the Fréchet distribution. Two useful characterizations of the family are also proposed. The parameters of the new family are estimated by the method of maximum likelihood. Its usefulness is illustrated by means of two real lifetime data sets.

This study proposes the machine learning based classification of medical plant leaves. The total six varieties of medicinal plant leaves-based dataset are collected from the Department of Agriculture, The Islamia University of Bahawalpur, Pakistan. These plants are commonly named in English as (herbal) Tulsi, Peppermint, Bael, Lemon balm, Catnip, and Stevia and scientifically named in Latin as Ocimum sanctum, Mentha balsamea, Aegle marmelos, Melissa officinalis, Nepeta cataria, and Stevia rebaudiana, respectively. The multispectral and digital image dataset are collected via a computer vision laboratory setup. For the preprocessing step, we crop the region of the leaf and transform it into a gray level format. Secondly, we perform a seed intensity-based edge/line detection utilizing Sobel filter and draw five regions of observations. A total of 65 fused features dataset is extracted, being a combination of texture, run-length matrix, and multi-spectral features. For the feature optimization process, we employ a chi-square feature selection approach and select 14 optimized features. Finally, five machine learning classifiers named as a multi-layer perceptron, logit-boost, bagging, random forest, and simple logistic are deployed on an optimized medicinal plant leaves dataset, and it is observed that the multi-layer perceptron classifier shows a relatively promising accuracy of 99.01% as compared to the competition. The distinct classification accuracy by the multi-layer perceptron classifier on six medicinal plant leaves are 99.10% for Tulsi, 99.80% for Peppermint, 98.40% for Bael, 99.90% for Lemon balm, 98.40% for Catnip, and 99.20% for Stevia.

Generalizing distributions is an old practice and has ever been considered as precious as many other practical problems in statistics. It simply started with defining different mathematical functional forms, and then induction of location, scale or inequality parameters. The generalization through induction of shape parameter(s) started in 1997, and the last two decades were full of such practices. But to cope with the complex situations under series and parallel structures, the art of mixing discrete and continuous started in 1998. In this article, we present a survey on compounding univariate distributions, their extensions and classes. We review several available compound classes and propose some new ones. The recent trends in the construction of generalized and compounding classes are discussed, and the need for future works are addressed.

The inverted (or inverse) distributions are sometimes very useful to explore additional properties of the phenomenons which non-inverted distributions cannot. We introduce a new inverted model called the inverted Nadarajah–Haghighi distribution which exhibits decreasing and unimodal (right-skewed) density while the hazard rate shapes are decreasing and upside-down bathtub. Our main focus is the estimation (from both frequentist and Bayesian points of view) of the unknown parameters along with some mathematical properties of the new model. The Bayes estimators and the associated credible intervals are obtained using Markov Chain Monte Carlo techniques under squared error loss function. The gamma priors are adopted for both scale and shape parameters. The potentiality of the distribution is analysed by means of two real data sets. In fact, it is found to be superior in its ability to sufficiently model the data as compared to the inverted Weibull, inverted Rayleigh, inverted exponential, inverted gamma, inverted Lindley and inverted power Lindley models.

The unit-Rayleigh distribution is a one-parameter distribution with support on the unit interval. It is defined as the so-called unit-Weibull distribution with a shape parameter equal to two. As a particular case among others, it seems that it has not been given special attention. This paper shows that the unit-Rayleigh distribution is much more interesting than it might at first glance, revealing closed-form expressions of important functions, and new desirable properties for application purposes. More precisely, on the theoretical level, we contribute to the following aspects: (i) we bring new characteristics on the form analysis of its main probabilistic and reliability functions, and show that the possible mode has a simple analytical expression, (ii) we prove new stochastic ordering results, (iii) we expose closed-form expressions of the incomplete and probability weighted moments at the basis of various probability functions and measures, (iv) we investigate distributional properties of the order statistics, (v) we show that the reliability coefficient can have a simple ratio expression, (vi) we provide a tractable expansion for the Tsallis entropy and (vii) we propose some bivariate unit-Rayleigh distributions. On a practical level, we show that the maximum likelihood estimate has a quite simple closed-form. Three data sets are analyzed and adjusted, revealing that the unit-Rayleigh distribution can be a better alternative to standard one-parameter unit distributions, such as the one-parameter Kumaraswamy, Topp–Leone, one-parameter beta, power and transmuted distributions.
