Xylella fastidiosa subsp. pauca (Xfp) is one of the most dangerous plant pathogens in the world. Identified in 2013 in olive trees in south–eastern Italy, it is spreading to the Mediterranean countries. The bacterium is transmitted by insects that feed on sap, and causes rapid wilting in olive trees. The paper explores the use of Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) in combination with a multispectral radiometer for early detection of infection. The study was carried out in three olive groves in the Apulia region (Italy) and involved four drone flights from 2017 to 2019. To classify Xfp severity level in olive trees at an early stage, a combined method of geostatistics and discriminant analysis was implemented. The results of cross-validation for the non-parametric classification method were of overall accuracy = 0.69, mean error rate = 0.31, and for the early detection class of accuracy 0.77 and misclassification probability 0.23. The results are promising and encourage the application of UAV technology for the early detection of Xfp infection.

Xylella fastidiosa is a bacterial pathogen affecting many plant species worldwide. Recently, the subspecies pauca (Xfp) has been reported as the causal agent of a devastating disease on olive trees in the Salento area (Apulia region, southeastern Italy), where centenarian and millenarian plants constitute a great agronomic, economic, and landscape trait, as well as an important cultural heritage. It is, therefore, important to develop diagnostic tools able to detect the disease early, even when infected plants are still asymptomatic, to reduce the infection risk for the surrounding plants. The reference analysis is the quantitative real time-Polymerase-Chain-Reaction (qPCR) of the bacterial DNA. The aim of this work was to assess whether the analysis of hyperspectral data, using different statistical methods, was able to select with sufficient accuracy, which plants to analyze with PCR, to save time and economic resources. The study area was selected in the Municipality of Oria (Brindisi). Partial Least Square Regression (PLSR) and Canonical Discriminant Analysis (CDA) indicated that the most important bands were those related to the chlorophyll function, water, lignin content, as can also be seen from the wilting symptoms in Xfp-infected plants. The confusion matrix of CDA showed an overall accuracy of 0.67, but with a better capability to discriminate the infected plants. Finally, an unsupervised classification, using only spectral data, was able to discriminate the infected plants at a very early stage of infection. Then, in phase of testing qPCR should be performed only on the plants predicted as infected from hyperspectral data, thus, saving time and financial resources.

Water scarcity, exacerbated by climate change and increasing agricultural water demands, highlights the necessity for efficient irrigation management. This study focused on estimating actual evapotranspiration (ETa) in watermelons under semi-arid Mediterranean conditions by integrating high-resolution satellite imagery and agro-meteorological data. Field experiments were conducted in Rutigliano, southern Italy, over a 2.80 ha area. ETa was measured with the eddy covariance (EC) technique and predicted using machine learning models. Multispectral reflectance data from Planet SuperDove satellites and local meteorological records were used as predictors. Partial least squares, the generalized linear model and three machine learning algorithms (Random Forest, Elastic Net, and Support Vector Machine) were evaluated. Random Forest yielded the highest predictive accuracy with an average R2 of 0.74, RMSE of 0.577 mm, and MBE of 0.03 mm. Model interpretability was performed through permutation importance and SHAP, identifying the near-infrared and red spectral bands, average daily temperature, and relative humidity as key predictors. This integrated approach could provide a scalable, precise method for watermelon ETa estimation, supporting data-driven irrigation management and improving water use efficiency in Mediterranean horticultural systems.
