Point cloud data segmentation, filtering, classification, and feature extraction are the main focus of point cloud data processing. DBSCAN (density-based spatial clustering of applications with noise) is capable of detecting arbitrary shapes of clusters in spaces of any dimension, and this method is very suitable for LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) data segmentation. The DBSCAN method needs at least two parameters: The minimum number of points minPts, and the searching radius ε. However, the parameter ε is often harder to determine, which hinders the application of the DBSCAN method in point cloud segmentation. Therefore, a segmentation algorithm based on DBSCAN is proposed with a novel automatic parameter ε estimation method—Estimation Method based on the average of k nearest neighbors’ maximum distance—with which parameter ε can be calculated on the intrinsic properties of the point cloud data. The method is based on the fitting curve of k and the mean maximum distance. The method was evaluated on different types of point cloud data: Airborne, and mobile point cloud data with and without color information. The results show that the accuracy values using ε estimated by the proposed method are 75%, 74%, and 71%, which are higher than those using parameters that are smaller or greater than the estimated one. The results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm can segment different types of LiDAR point clouds with higher accuracy in a robust manner. The algorithm can be applied to airborne and mobile LiDAR point cloud data processing systems, which can reduce manual work and improve the automation of data processing.

As air users, the public is also participants in air pollution control and important evaluators of environmental protection. Therefore, understanding the public perception and response to air pollution is an essential part of improving air governance. This study proposed an analytical framework for public response to air pollution based on online complaint data and sentiment analysis. In the proposed framework, the emotional dictionary of air pollution was firstly constructed using microblog data and complaint data. Secondly, the emotional dictionary of air pollution and the sentiment analysis method were used to calculate public complaints’ emotional intensity. Besides, the spatial and temporal characteristics of air pollution complaint data and public emotional intensity, the complaints content, and their correlation with PM2.5 (particulate matters smaller than 2.5 micrometers) and PM10 were analyzed using address matching, spatial analysis, and word cloud analysis. Finally, the proposed framework was applied to 13,469 air pollution complaint data in Shandong Province from 2012 to 2018. The obtained results indicated that: the public was mainly complaining about the exhaust gas emissions from enterprises and factories. Spatially, the geographical center of complaint data was located in the inland industrial urban agglomeration of Shandong Province. Correlatively, air pollution complaints’ negative emotional intensity was significantly negatively correlated with PM2.5 (−0.73). Moreover, the number of public complaints about air pollution and the intensity of negative emotions also decreased with improved air quality in Shandong Province in recent years.

Severe air pollution problems have led to a rise in the Chinese public’s concern, and it is necessary to use monitoring stations to monitor and evaluate pollutant levels. However, monitoring stations are limited, and the public is everywhere. It is also essential to understand the public’s awareness and behavioral response to air pollution. Air pollution complaint data can more directly reflect the public’s real air quality perception than social media data. Therefore, based on air pollution complaint data and sentiment analysis, we proposed a new air pollution perception index (APPI) in this paper. Firstly, we constructed the emotional dictionary for air pollution and used sentiment analysis to calculate public complaints’ emotional intensity. Secondly, we used the piecewise function to obtain the APPI based on the complaint Kernel density and complaint emotion Kriging interpolation, and we further analyzed the change of center of gravity of the APPI. Finally, we used the proposed APPI to examine the 2012 to 2017 air pollution complaint data in Shandong Province, China. The results were verified by the POI (points of interest) data and word cloud analysis. The results show that: (1) the statistical analysis and spatial distribution of air pollution complaint density and public complaint emotion intensity are not entirely consistent. The proposed APPI can more reasonably evaluate the public perception of air pollution. (2) The public perception of air pollution tends to the southwest of Shandong Province, while coastal cities are relatively weak. (3) The content of public complaints about air pollution mainly focuses on the exhaust emissions of enterprises. Moreover, the more enterprises gather in inland cities, the public perception of air pollution is stronger.

On buffer zone construction, the rasterization-based dilation method inevitably introduces errors, and the double-sided parallel line method involves a series of complex operations. In this paper, we proposed a parallel buffer algorithm based on area merging and MPI (Message Passing Interface) to improve the performances of buffer analyses on processing large datasets. Experimental results reveal that there are three major performance bottlenecks which significantly impact the serial and parallel buffer construction efficiencies, including the area merging strategy, the task load balance method and the MPI inter-process results merging strategy. Corresponding optimization approaches involving tree-like area merging strategy, the vertex number oriented parallel task partition method and the inter-process results merging strategy were suggested to overcome these bottlenecks. Experiments were carried out to examine the performance efficiency of the optimized parallel algorithm. The estimation results suggested that the optimization approaches could provide high performance and processing ability for buffer construction in a cluster parallel environment. Our method could provide insights into the parallelization of spatial analysis algorithm.

We proposed a new framework to measure the similarity of topological structure between complex trajectories. A complex trajectory is first represented by a graph structure with nodes and edges. Secondly, we developed a Comprehensive Structure Matching (CSM) algorithm to identify all common structures between the complex trajectories of interest. Thirdly, we used the Jaccard similarity coefficient to evaluate the similarity between complex trajectories. We used synthetic data to evaluate the CSM method by comparing the VF2 and the exact graph edit distance (EGED) algorithms. Results show that the CSM algorithm outperforms the EGED in terms of the computation efficiency. The CSM is more comprehensive than the VF2 algorithm as it further considers the partial isomorphism. We used the CSM algorithm to examine the 1993 to 2012 complex trajectories of anticyclonic eddies in the South China Sea (SCS). The CSM successfully found the complex trajectories that are similar to a thoroughly-studied ACE3 trajectory in the SCS. From the similar trajectories, we identified a dominant migrating path of the eddies in the northern SCS and some new trajectories that propagated across the 18°N parallel, which were not reported before. These findings help us better understand the behaviors and the evolution of the mesoscale eddies in the SCS.

Mesoscale eddy process with at least one splitting and/or merging event can be defined as either a complex process or a simple process. Investigation of the difference between these two categories could provide new insights into how different factors, such as the seabed topography, Kuroshio intrusion, and winds, affect the origin, migration, and decay of the mesoscale eddies. This study compared the characteristics of the complex against the simple eddy processes in the South China Sea (SCS) from 1993 to 2016. We comprehensively analyzed the eddy processes with regards to their characteristic points, trajectories, and networks. The simple and complex processes share many similarities but do show significantly different behaviors. Both the simple and complex processes mainly start from the eastern SCS. However, the complex processes mainly vanish in the western SCS whereas the simple processes disappear almost everywhere across the SCS. The complex processes last longer and migrate more than the simple processes. Lastly, the complex processes mainly move westward within the community. The complex processes can be further categorized into complex anticyclonic and cyclonic eddy processes. Spatially, the splitting and merging events mainly occur in the southwest of Taiwan, northwest of the Luzon Island, and the southeast of Vietnam. Temporally, the merging and splitting events mainly occur in the fall. The interaction among the communities reveals the different migration patterns of the complex anticyclonic and cyclonic eddy processes in the SCS.
