Selecting an optimal project delivery system is a critical task that owners should do to ensure project success. This selection is a complex decision-making process. The complexity arises from the uncertain or not well-defined parameters and/or the multiple criteria structure of such decisions. In this study, a decision aid model using the analytical hierarchy process (AHP) coupled with rough approximation concepts is developed to assist the owners. The selection criteria are determined by studying a number of benchmarks. The model ranks the alternative delivery systems by considering both benchmark results and owner’s opinion. In interval AHP, an optimization procedure is performed via obtaining the upper and the lower linear programming models to determine the interval priorities for alternative project delivery systems. In cases having incomparable alternatives, which is the most likely case in uncertain decision making, the model uses rough set-based measures to reduce the number of decision criteria ...

Torsional stick–slip vibrations easily occur when the drill bit encounters a hard or a hard-soft staggered formation during drilling process. Moreover, serious stick–slip vibrations of the drill string is the main factor leading to low drilling efficiency or even causing the downhole tools failure. Therefore, establishing the stick–slip theoretical model, which is more consistent with the actual field conditions, is the key point for new drilling technology. Based on this, a new torsional vibration tool is proposed in this paper, then the multidegree-of-freedom torsional vibrations model and nonlinear dynamic model of the drill string are established. Combined with the actual working conditions in the drilling process, the stick–slip reduction mechanism of the drill string is studied. The research results show that the higher rotational speed of the top drive, smaller viscous damping of the drill bit, and smaller WOB (weight on bit) will prevent the stick–slip vibration to happen. Moreover, the new torsional vibration tool has excellent stick–slip reduction effect. The research results and the model established in this paper can provide important references for reducing the stick–slip vibrations of the drill string and improving the rock-breaking efficiency.

The nonlinear vibration, including primary resonance (PR) of porous FG sandwich (PFGS) cylindrical shells with a viscoelastic core is investigated in this research. The structure considered is on a nonlinear viscoelastic foundation composing of two Pasternak and Winkler foundations augmented with a nonlinear cubic stiffness by Kelvin–Voigt viscoelastic model. Two types of PFGS cylindrical shells are considered and viscoelastic core is made of Kelvin–Voigt type material. Utilizing Donnell’s shell theory, von-Kármán equation and the Galerkin’s method, a discretized governing equation is derived and verified. The multiple scales method is applied to investigate the nonlinear PR of the shells.

The inserted sealing tool is a critical downhole implement that is used to balance the downhole pressure in multistage fracturing operations and prevent fracturing fluid from overflow and/or backward flow. The sealing ring of an inserted sealing tool plays an important role in downhole sealing since a sealing failure would ail the fracturing operation. In order to improve the sealing performance and reduce the potential fracturing failures, this research aims to investigate the influence of V-shaped sealing ring geometries on sealing performance. Constitutive experiments of rubber materials were carried out and the parameters of the constitutive relationship of rubber materials were obtained. A two-dimensional axisymmetric model considering the sealing ring has been established and influences are investigated with considerations of various system parameters and operating conditions. It is found that the stresses concentrated at the shoulder and inner vertex of the sealing ring have direct impact on the damage of the sealing rings under operational conditions. Moreover, the sealing interference, among several other factors, greatly affects the life of the sealing ring. A new design of the sealing ring is suggested with optimized geometric parameters. Its geometric parameters are the edge height of 5 mm, the vertex angle of 90°–100°, and the interference of 0.1 mm, which show a better performance and prolonged operation life of the sealing ring.
