Asim K Debnath received his Ph.D. degree in Medicinal Chemistry in 1987 from Jadavpur University, Kolkata, India, and came to Pomona College, Claremont, California to pursue his postdoctoral career with Prof. Corwin Hansch at the Chemistry Department. Dr. Debnath joined the Lindsley F. Kimball Research Institute (LFKRI) at the New York Blood Center in 1993 as a junior faculty. Dr. Debnath is a Member and Head of the Molecular Modeling & Drug Design. Dr. Debnath has been actively engaged in Computer-Aided and structure-based drug design for the last 29 years. The primary focus of his laboratory is to develop anti-HIV drugs against viral entry, assembly, uncoating, and maturation. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic urgency, his laboratory dedicated efforts to developing pan-coronavirus inhibitors. Dr. Debnath has published more than 115 peer-reviewed articles in top-rated journals, including Nature Medicine, PNAS, Lancet, JBC, and JMC. Dr. Debnath has mentored four outstanding scientists as postdoctoral fellows and seven master’s students during his tenure. He filed several patent applications, from which sixteen patents have been granted so far by the US Patent Office. His current project on the development of antivirals against HIV envelope glycoprotein has been funded (R01) by the US National Institute of Health (NIH) for ten years (2013-2023) with an award amount of $7.8 million. Dr. Debnath currently serves on the editorial boards of four international journals, IJMS.
