Sediment erosion frequently occurs in areas with high incidences of cavitation. The collaborative impact of abrasion and cavitation presents a host of challenges, threats, and damages to hydraulic engineering. However, little is known about the synergistic wear mechanism, and research conclusions remain inconsistent. In this work, relevant studies on synergistic erosion have been collected, classified, and analyzed. Presently, research on synergistic wear primarily operates at the macro and micro levels. The microscopic level enables the visualization and quantification of the process by which particles gain momentum from bubbles, the trajectory of particle acceleration, and the mechanism that triggers strong interactions between bubble-particle. At the macro level, erosion is understood as the summation of damage effects on the wall that is caused by the interaction between a plethora of bubbles of varying scales and numerous particles. The synergistic bubble-particle effect is reflected in the dual inhibiting or promoting mechanism. Furthermore, while numerical simulations could be realized by coupling cavitation, multiphase flow, and erosion models, their accuracy is not infallible. In the future, the dual role of particles, and particles driven by micro-jets or shock waves should be fully considered when establishing a combined erosion model. In addition, enhancing the influence of flow field and boundary parameters around bubbles and utilizing FSI would improve the predictive accuracy of erosion location and erosion rate. This work helps to elucidate the combined wear mechanism of hydraulic machinery components in sediment-laden flow environments and provides a theoretical basis for the design, manufacture, processing, and maintenance of hydraulic machinery.

The Pelton turbine has been widely used to develop high-head water resources with sediments because of its advantages in life cycle costs. When a flood or monsoon season occurs, the sediment concentration in the river increases suddenly, causing severe erosion to the nozzle, needle, and runner of Pelton turbines. After decades of development, researchers have developed practical engineering experience to reduce the sediment concentration of the flow through the turbine and ensure the safety and efficiency of power generation. Research on the mechanism of sediment erosion, development of anti-erosion materials, and establishment of erosion prediction models have attracted scholarly interest in recent years. Extensive research has been conducted to determine a complete and valuable syndication erosion model. However, owing to the complexity of the flow and wear mechanisms, the influence of specific parameters of erosion and the syndication effect is still difficult to determine. Computational fluid dynamics and erosion monitoring technology have also been evaluated and applied. This paper presents a comprehensive review of the erosion of Pelton turbines, some of the latest technical methods, and possible future development directions.

The utilization of pump as turbines (PATs) within water distribution systems for energy regulation and hydroelectricity generation purposes has increasingly attracted the energy field players’ attention. However, its power production efficiency still faces difficulties due to PAT’s lack of flow control ability in such dynamic systems. This has eventually led to the introduction of the so-called “variable operating strategy” or VOS, where the impeller rotational speed may be controlled to satisfy the system-required flow conditions. Taking from these grounds, this study numerically investigates PAT eventual flow structures formation mechanism, especially when subjected to varying impeller rotational speed. CFD-backed numerical simulations were conducted on PAT flow under four operating conditions (1.00 QBEP, 0.82 QBEP, 0.74 QBEP, and 0.55 QBEP), considering five impeller rotational speeds (110 rpm, 130 rpm, 150 rpm, 170 rpm, and 190 rpm). Study results have shown that both PAT’s flow and pressure fields deteriorate with the machine influx decrease, where the impeller rotational speed increase is found to alleviate PAT pressure pulsation levels under high-flow operating conditions, while it worsens them under part-load conditions. This study’s results add value to a thorough understanding of PAT flow dynamics, which, in a long run, contributes to the solution of the so-far existent technical issues.

Due to the uneven distribution of water resources, there are many water diversion projects around the world, such as the South-to-North Water Diversion Project in China, especially in some plain areas. To transfer water from low to high areas, large low-head pumps have been widely used. The transition process of the pumping station is mainly caused by the sudden change in the flow velocity and pressure of the fluid in the pipeline of the pumping station system caused by the start-up and shutdown processes. The previous research has mainly been based on the one-dimensional characteristic line method. However, due to the characteristics of the low-lift pumping station, the flow passage is short and irregular, and the calculation results often cannot guarantee the accuracy of the calculation. In addition to some faults in the actual operation process, in some pumping stations, accidents or operation-scheduling faults are caused by transient processes, such as a high degree of water hammer, the inability to initiate backward flow, the shutdown load rejection runaway exceeding the standard, and decreased hydraulic efficiency. To avoid transition process failures in the newly designed pumping stations and the modified pumping stations, it is necessary to carry out a research review of the three-dimensional transition process of large low-lift pumps. Especially with the development of computing technology, CFD numerical simulation technology has become the main research method for analyzing the pump transition process. The research on the transition process is mainly based on the combination of numerical simulations and experiments. The reliability of a numerical simulation is verified by an experiment. A numerical simulation can measure some parameters that cannot be measured by an experiment. Dynamic mesh technology has become the main technical means for using CFD numerical simulation to study the three-dimensional transition process, and the secondary development of computing software has become the main trend of future development. This paper analyzes and summarizes the research status of the start–stop transition process of large low-lift pump stations and provides a reference for the protection of the start–stop transition process of pump stations.

The bulb tubular unit has advantages over other units in the low head, large discharge, and tidal energy. The development and utilization of low head and ultralow head hydraulic resources can increase the runner’s energy parameters, make up for the defects of large size and low speed of the unit, and reduce the construction investment. The bulb tubular turbine’s operation stability and structural strength are compared and analyzed by the orthogonal test method to improve the perfomance of bulb tubular turbine. The results show that the optimal design scheme can be obtained when the number of guide vane is 16, the distance between the guide vane and the blade is 1995 mm, the hub ratio is 0.31, the relative twist angle of the blade is 27°, and the cascade density is 0.72. After optimization, the bulb tubular turbine’s efficiency and output are increased by 5.72% and 2.86% at a low flow rate, respectively. The vortex at the tailpipe is reduced, and the blade work effect and the cavitation performance are well. The maximum pressure pulsation amplitude in the flow passage is reduced by 73.15%, the maximum blade deformation is reduced by 39.59%, and the maximum blade static stress is reduced by 13.16%. Finally, the reliability of numerical simulation results is verified by the model test.

In the shaft axis monitoring of hydrogenerating unit condition monitoring and fault diagnosis, the shaft orbit is intuitive and comprehensively reflects the unit operation state, and different shaft orbits correspond to different fault types, which can accurately indicate a system vibration fault. Shaft orbit identification has important significance for vibration fault diagnosis. In getting the feature extraction and pattern recognition of a shaft orbit, the Zernike moment is better than the Hu moment; it has the advantages of a small calculation error and a high recognition rate. A rough set neural network (RS‐BP hybrid model) of shaft orbit recognition is established, which uses just 13 moment eigenvalues reserved by the rough set feature selection algorithm as input variables; it has the same calculation error and recognition rate and reduces the calculation time step. The simulation of the recognition of shaft orbits shows that the hybrid model has achieved good results in the identification of shaft orbits.
