Digitization and automation have always had an immense impact on healthcare. It embraces every new and advanced technology. Recently the world has witnessed the prominence of the metaverse which is an emerging technology in digital space. The metaverse has huge potential to provide a plethora of health services seamlessly to patients and medical professionals with an immersive experience. This paper proposes the amalgamation of artificial intelligence and blockchain in the metaverse to provide better, faster, and more secure healthcare facilities in digital space with a realistic experience. Our proposed architecture can be summarized as follows. It consists of three environments, namely the doctor’s environment, the patient’s environment, and the metaverse environment. The doctors and patients interact in a metaverse environment assisted by blockchain technology which ensures the safety, security, and privacy of data. The metaverse environment is the main part of our proposed architecture. The doctors, patients, and nurses enter this environment by registering on the blockchain and they are represented by avatars in the metaverse environment. All the consultation activities between the doctor and the patient will be recorded and the data, i.e., images, speech, text, videos, clinical data, etc., will be gathered, transferred, and stored on the blockchain. These data are used for disease prediction and diagnosis by explainable artificial intelligence (XAI) models. The GradCAM and LIME approaches of XAI provide logical reasoning for the prediction of diseases and ensure trust, explainability, interpretability, and transparency regarding the diagnosis and prediction of diseases. Blockchain technology provides data security for patients while enabling transparency, traceability, and immutability regarding their data. These features of blockchain ensure trust among the patients regarding their data. Consequently, this proposed architecture ensures transparency and trust regarding both the diagnosis of diseases and the data security of the patient. We also explored the building block technologies of the metaverse. Furthermore, we also investigated the advantages and challenges of a metaverse in healthcare.

Cervical spine fractures are a medical emergency that can cause permanent paralysis and even death. Traditional fracture detection techniques, such as manual radiography image interpretation, are time-consuming and prone to human error. Deep learning algorithms have shown promising results in various medical imaging applications i.e., disease diagnosis, including fracture detection of bones. In this study, we propose a two-stage approach for detecting cervical spine fractures. The first stage employs a convolutional neural network (CNN) model to determine the presence or absence of a fracture in the cervical spine, using a dataset of cervical spine Computed Tomography (CT) scan images as well as Grad-CAM for enhanced visualization and interpretation. In the second stage, our focus shifts to specific vertebrae within the cervical spine. To accomplish this task, we trained and evaluated the performance of the YOLOv5 and YOLOv8 models with 9170 images consisting of seven vertebrae. The detection results of both YOLO versions are compared and evaluated. The precision, recall, mAP50, and mAP50-90 were 0.900, 0.890, 0.935, 0.872, respectively. The results of this research demonstrate the potential of deep learning-based approaches for cervical spine fracture detection. By automating the detection process, these algorithms can assist radiologists and healthcare professionals in making accurate and timely diagnoses, leading to improved patient outcomes.

The natural occurrence of harmful algal blooms (HABs) adversely affects the quality of clean and fresh water. They pose increased risks to human health, aquatic ecosystems, and water bodies. Continuous monitoring and appropriate measures must be taken to combat HABs. Deep learning models that utilize computer vision play a vital role in identifying and classifying harmful algal blooms in aquatic environments and water storage facilities. Inspecting algal blooms using conventional methods, such as algae detection under microscopes, is difficult, expensive, and time-consuming. Deep learning algorithms have shown a notable and remarkable performance in the image classification domain and its applications, including microscopic algae species classification and detection. In this study, we propose a deep learning-based approach for classifying microscopic images of algae using computer vision. This approach employs a convolutional neural network (CNN) model integrated with two additional blocks—squeeze and dense blocks—to determine the presence of algae, followed by adding Grad-CAM to the proposed model to ensure interpretability and transparency. We performed several experiments on our custom dataset of microscopic algae images. Data augmentation techniques were employed to increase the number of images in the dataset, whereas pre-processing techniques were implemented to elevate the overall data quality. Our proposed model was trained on 3200 images consisting of four classes. We also compared our proposed model with the other transfer learning models, i.e., ResNet50 and Vgg16. Our proposed model outperformed the other two deep learning models. The proposed model demonstrated 96.7% accuracy, while Resnet50, EfficientNetB0, and VGG16 showed accuracy of 85.0%, 92.96%, and 93.5%, respectively. The results of this research demonstrate the potential of deep learning-based approaches for algae classification. This deep learning-based algorithm can be deployed in real-time applications to classify and identify algae to ensure the quality of water reservoirs. Computer-assisted solutions are advantageous for tracking freshwater algal blooms. Using deep learning-based models to identify and classify algae species from microscopic images is a novel application in the AI community.

Medical image segmentation represents a fundamental task in medical image analysis, serving as a critical component for accurate diagnosis, treatment planning, and disease monitoring. The emergence of Denoising Diffusion Probabilistic Models (DDPMs) has revolutionized the landscape of generative modeling and recently gained significant attention in medical image analysis. This comprehensive review examines the current state of the art in diffusion models for medical image segmentation, covering theoretical foundations, methodological innovations, computational efficiency strategies, and clinical applications. We analyze recent advances in latent diffusion frameworks, transformer-based architectures, and ambiguous segmentation modeling while addressing the practical challenges of implementing these models in clinical environments. The review encompasses applications across multiple medical imaging modalities including Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), Computed Tomography (CT), ultrasound, and X-ray imaging, providing insights into performance achievements and identifying future research directions. Through systematic analysis of publications mostly from 2019 to 2025, we demonstrate that diffusion models have achieved remarkable progress in addressing fundamental challenges including data scarcity, inter-observer variability, and uncertainty quantification. Notable achievements include inference time being reduced from 91.23 s to 0.34 s for echocardiogram segmentation (LDSeg, Echo dataset), DSC scores up to 0.96 for knee cartilage MRI segmentation, and a +13.87% DSC improvement over baseline methods for breast ultrasound segmentation. This review serves as a comprehensive resource for researchers and clinicians interested in leveraging diffusion models for medical image segmentation, providing a roadmap for future research and clinical translation.

A major cause of cancer-related mortality globally is colorectal cancer, which emphasises the critical need for state-of-the-art diagnostic tools for early identification and categorisation. We use deep learning methodology to classify colorectal cancer histology images into eight different categories automatically. To improve classification accuracy and maximise feature extraction, we create a DeepFocusNet architecture with attention approaches using a dataset of 5000 high-resolution (150 × 150) histological images. To improve model generalisation, we combine data augmentation, fine-tuning, and freezing early layers into our progressive training approach. Additionally, we create full-scale images using heatmaps and multi-class overlays after breaking up large-scale histology images (5000 × 5000) into smaller windows for classification using a special tiling technique. Attention mechanisms are added to improve the model’s performance and interpretability, as they are proven to focus on the most important histopathological traits. The model provides pathologists with high-resolution probability maps that aid in precise and speedy patient identification. The robustness of our methodology is demonstrated by empirical findings, opening the door for clinical applications of AI-driven histopathological investigation. Pathologists can receive precise and efficient diagnostic support from the final system thanks to its high-resolution probability maps and 97% classification accuracy. Empirical results provide evidence of our methodology’s robustness and show its potential for real-world clinical applications in AI-assisted histopathology.
