Modified cement mortar was prepared by incorporating a superabsorbent polymer (SAP) with two kinds of dosing state, dry powdery SAP and swelled SAP (where the SAP has been pre-wetted in tap water), respectively. The mechanical properties, drying shrinkage and freeze–thaw resistance of the mortars were compared and analyzed with the variation of SAP content and entrained water-to-cement ratios. Additionally, the effect of SAP on the microstructure of mortar was characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The results indicate that agglomerative accumulation is formed in the voids of mortar after water desorption from SAP and there are abundant hydration products, most of which are C-S-H gels, around the SAP voids. The incorporation of the powdery SAP increases the 28 d compressive strength of the mortars by about 10% to 50%, while for the incorporation of swelled SAP, the 28 d compressive strength of the mortar can be increased by about −26% to 6%. At a dosage of 0.1% SAP and an entrained water–cement ratio of 0.06, the powdery SAP and the swelled SAP can reduce the mortar shrinkage rate by about 32.2% and 14.5%, respectively. Both the incorporation of powdery and swelled SAP has a positive effect on the freeze–thaw resistance of cement mortar. In particular, for powdery SAP with an entrained water-to-cement ratio of 0.06, the mass loss rate after 300 cycles is still lower than 5%.
Epoxidized soybean oil (ESO) was employed as a novel penetrant cooperating with a conventional rejuvenator (CR) for the recycling of reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP). The influence of ESO on the diffusibility and the regenerating effects of CR on RAP were investigated. The diffusibility testing result shows that the diffusibility of CR is enhanced by the addition of ESO because the epoxy group in ESO can facilitate asphaltene dispersion due to its high polarity, which simultaneously reduces the viscosity and improves the fluidity of aged bitumen so as to allow diffusion of the rejuvenator into the aged bitumen. Road performance testing of a recycled hot mix asphalt mixture (RHMA) indicates that the fatigue and cracking resistance properties as well as the water stability of RHMA containing CR can be improved by the addition of ESO due to the diffusibility enhancement of CR, which boosts the regenerating effect of CR on aged bitumen in RAP. The fatigue and cracking resistance properties as well as the water stability of the recycled hot mix asphalt mixture containing CR with 7 wt % ESO approximate those of the hot mix asphalt mixture composed of the same virgin aggregates and bitumen. Taking into account the rutting resistance decline versus the addition of ESO, the content of ESO should not exceed 7 wt % of the conventional rejuvenator.
Low atmospheric pressure (LAP) can enormously affect properties of cement concrete in plateau areas. There are fewer studies and attendances on this issue than those of cement concrete in normal atmospheric pressure (AP), because of the limitations of both environmental conditions and instruments. In order to improve properties of cement concrete under LAP, influences of LAP on properties of cement concrete were reviewed in this work. The influence rules and mechanism on properties of cement concrete were summarized. The corresponding mechanism and techniques were put forward for enhancing the properties of cement concrete. The results of researchers show that LAP can significantly reduce the air entraining ability of the air entraining agent (AEA). Air content in concrete linearly decreases with the decrease of AP when other conditions are constant. If the initial air content is high, the decrease rate of air content increases with the decrease of AP. When the initial air content in cement concretes is similar, the greater the slump of cement concrete, the stronger its resistance to the decrease of air content caused by the decrease of AP. In addition, the condition of the bubble characteristics of hardened cement concrete under LAP is worse than that under normal AP. Therefore, the change of concrete properties under LAP is mainly attributed to these bubble characteristics, such as air content, bubble spacing coefficient, bubble radius and bubble specific surface area. In this work, nano-silica (negative charges) with cationic oligomeric surfactants is recommended as a new type of AEA to optimize the bubble characteristics under LAP in plateau areas.
This article intends to study the influence of macrotexture and microtexture on the skid resistance of four types of aggregates. For this purpose, fractal dimension (D), root mean square height (Rq), and Polished Stone Value (PSV) were tested. The Pearson correlation coefficients between PSV and D or Rq in the interval of different polishing cycles were calculated and analyzed with correlation analysis. The relationships between PSV and Rq were also established. The results showed that the PSV development was approximately divided into 3 stages including accelerated attenuation stage, decelerated attenuation stage, and stabilization stage. There is a critical point of the entire polishing cycles. When the number of the polishing cycles exceeds this critical point, microtexture replaces macrotexture to play a major role in the skid resistance of aggregates. In the accelerated attenuation stage, macrotexture plays a major role in the skid resistance of aggregates. In the decelerated attenuation stage and stabilization stage, microtexture gradually plays a major role in the skid resistance of aggregates. Because of roughest microtexture in the stabilization stage, bauxite can provide the highest levels of skid resistance for high friction surface treatment over the long‐term period.
Crumb rubber (CR) manufactured from waste tires used in bitumen could improve bitumen performance and reduce environmental pollution. In this work, three different modification methods, pretreatment of the CR particles (microwave activation), warm mix additive (Sasobit), and trans-polyoctenamer (TOR) were used to improve the compatibility of CR with bitumen. Moreover, two other specimens, Sasobit and microwave activated and TOR and microwave activation were fabricated, and their performance was investigated. The softening point, elastic recovery, force ductility, rotational viscosity, temperature sweep, frequency sweep, and multiple stress creep and recovery (MSCR) tests were measured to evaluate the physical and rheological properties of rubberized bitumen. The results showed that TOR improved the physical properties of rubberized bitumen significantly but had a negative effect on the viscosity. Sasobit decreased the viscosity of rubberized bitumen considerably and improved the physical properties of rubberized bitumen moderately. Microwave treatment on CR had a negative effect on the high temperature performance and elastic recoverability of rubberized bitumen, however, attributing to the degradation and devulcanization effect of microwave on CR, the viscosity of rubberized bitumen was improved. From the results of composite modification, the influence of TOR on the performance of rubberized bitumen was more obvious than that of the microwave activation treatment. Moreover, the influence of Sasobit on its performance was less than that of the microwave activation treatment.
