The ultra-wideband (UWB) multi-input multi-output (MIMO) radar technique is playing a more and more important role in the application of through-wall detection because of its high resolution, lower antenna requirements, and efficient data capturing ability. This paper develops a novel UWB MIMO radar system using a stepped-frequency continuous-wave (SFCW) signal, which is designed to detect human targets behind the regular brick and concrete wall. In order to balance high range resolution and wall-penetration depth, a novel miniaturized Vivaldi antenna with desired bandwidth of 0.5–2.5 GHz was designed, simulated, manufactured, and successfully used in through-wall imaging. To suppress the artifacts in the focused image and reduce the computing complexity, the cross-correlation-based time domain back projection (CC-TDBP) algorithm was developed. In addition, a through-wall imaging model was established, based on which the effects of the wall on the refraction of electromagnetic (EM) waves and the reduction of velocity are compensated. Finally, different experiments were conducted for multiple stationary targets utilizing the designed radar system, and the improved BP-based algorithms are applied to focus the targets behind the wall more accurately. The reconstructed two-dimensional (2D) images illustrate that the designed MIMO radar system can successfully detect and image human targets in the air and behind the wall.

Detection of human activities in complex environments such as through wall by ultrawideband radar has many important applications in security, vital rescue, and so on. It is much more difficult to detect vital signs of moving human beings than static ones. In this letter, we build a model for moving targets and apply the time domain finite element method to simulate single-input multiple-outputs (SIMO) radar data. Human respiration is modeled by changing body size and physical parameters. The background removal is performed for radar data. Then, we use the back projection to reconstruct the consecutive target locations, which constitute the moving path, leading to a curve carrying vital signs in the radar image. Since SIMO radar data are multivariate, we use multivariate empirical mode decomposition (MEMD) and fast Fourier transform to separate and extract the respiratory characteristic frequencies. The reconstructed frequency coincides with that in the original model. The result shows that the combination of SIMO radar and MEMD can effectively identify the moving path of the human being behind the wall and extract vital signs.
Parameter estimation of the lunar regolith not only provides important information about the composition but is also critical to quantifying potential resources for lunar exploration and engineering for human outposts. The Lunar Penetrating Radar (LPR) onboard China’s Chang’E-3 (CE-3) provides a unique opportunity for mapping the near-surface stratigraphic structure and estimating the parameters of the regolith. In this paper, the electrical parameters and the iron-titanium content of regolith are estimated based on the two sets of LPR data. Firstly, it is theoretically verified that the relative dielectric constant can be estimated according to the difference of the reflected time of two receivers from a same target. Secondly, in order to verify the method, a parameter estimation flow is designed. Subsequently, a simple model and a complex model of regolith are carried out for the method verification. Finally, on the basis of the two sets of LPR data, the electrical parameters and the iron-titanium content of regolith are estimated. The relative dielectric constant of regolith at CE-3 landing site is 3.0537 and the content of TiO2 and FeO is 14.0127%. This helps us predict the reserves of resources at the CE-3 landing site and even in the entire Mare Imbrium.
To solve the problems of serious deformation and support difficulty of deep and narrow gob-side coal pillars, an optimized hydraulic roof cutting structural model for the roof structure of narrow gob-side coal pillars in kilometer–deep shafts was established based on the 6302 working face of the Xinhe coal mine. The influence of factors such as the angle and height of hydraulic roof cutting on the stress evolution of narrow gob-side coal pillars was analyzed, the principle of the pressure relief of hydraulic roof cutting of narrow gob-side coal pillars in kilometer–deep shafts was revealed, and an industrial application was conducted. The results of the study show that, first, the hydraulic roof cutting of narrow gob-side coal pillars in a kilometer–deep shaft transfers the roof load only to the gob area, but not to the solid-side deep coal body; and second, there is an optimal height for roof cutting and pressure relief, i.e., the effect of roof cutting and pressure relief will not be improved after the second critical layer is exceeded. An industrial application was carried out along the gob-side entry at the 6302 working face of the Xinhe coal mine, which showed that the strength of the roof was weakened, the stress concentration in the coal pillars was relieved, and the deformation of the rocks surrounding the roadway was controlled after hydraulic roof cutting and pressure relief. This study provides some technical guidance for the stability control of gob-side entries under similar conditions.
As one of the important scientific instruments of lunar exploration, the Lunar Penetrating Radar (LPR) onboard China’s Chang’E-3 (CE-3) provides a unique opportunity to image the lunar subsurface structure. Due to the low-frequency and high-frequency noises of the data, only a few geological structures are visible. In order to better improve the resolution of the data, band-pass filtering and empirical mode decomposition filtering (EMD) methods are usually used, but in this paper, we present a mathematical morphological filtering (MMF) method to reduce the noise. The MMF method uses two structural elements with different scales to extract certain scale-range information from the original signal, at the same time, the noise beyond the scale range of the two different structural elements is suppressed. The application on synthetic signals demonstrates that the morphological filtering method has a better performance in noise suppression compared with band-pass filtering and EMD methods. Then, we apply band-pass filtering, EMD, and MMF methods to the LPR data, and the MMF method also achieves a better result. Furthermore, according to the result by MMF method, three stratigraphic zones are revealed along the rover’s route.
The superposition effect of the advanced support pressure of the working face in the final mining stage and the lateral support stress of the roadway is a key factor affecting the stability of the retracement channel. To study the stress evolution of the retracement channel under the super-thick nappe and the timing of strengthening support, this paper takes the mining of the 360808 working face in Xinji No. 1 Mine as the engineering background, analyzes the occurrence conditions of the working face and the measured rock pressure law, and constructs a roof structure model of the retreat area. The UDEC discrete element numerical simulation software was used to analyze the evolution characteristics of concentrated stress and the failure law of surrounding rock around the retracement channel under gradual excavation conditions. Based on the relationship between the position of the main roof fracture and the stability of the surrounding rock of the retracement channel, the instability mechanism of the surrounding rock of the retracement channel was revealed. A mechanical model of the surrounding rock of the retracement channel under the condition of a gradient coal pillar was established, and the energy criterion K for the instability of the surrounding rock was obtained. The method of adding anchor cables to strengthen the support of the surrounding rock of the retracement channel was proposed. The results indicate that the accumulation of energy in the surrounding rock of the retracement channel is greater than the internal consumption of energy, which is the direct reason for the instability of the surrounding rock of the retracement channel. The time to strengthen the support of the roof is when the working face is 15 m away from the retracement channel. According to the analysis of on-site monitoring results, the roof convergence and the two-sides convergence before and after strengthening the support were reduced by 90 mm and 140 mm, respectively. Under the strengthening of support, the slope of the retracement channel in the 360808 working face is slight, without roof fall, and the surrounding rock of the channel is effectively controlled, which is of great significance for ensuring the safe application of the retracement channel. It has reference value for the safety production of surrounding mines and is conducive to promoting the sustainable development of local resource-based society and economy.
