Urban development boundaries are efficient tools for coordinating urban–rural relations and ensuring sustainable development. From 2000 to 2020, the expansion rate of the built-up area in cities and towns throughout China reached 177%, far exceeding the urban population growth rate of 96.5% in the same period. As this spatial expansion seems to continue, there is a need to intervene and control urban boundaries. We believe using the urban–rural integration perspective to set (or reset) and maintain urban development boundaries will help manage urban expansion more effectively than present methods. This research, therefore, develops an urban development boundary delineation method from a macroscopic view for China. A new model for defining boundaries was developed based on the four dimensions of urban–rural interaction: economic demand, environmental protection, urban carrying capacity, and urban development resistance. And an empirical study was conducted in Guiyang City as an example. The results show that the resultant urban boundary can provide a more comprehensive and realistic growth model than current methods, making it more applicable for controlling and fostering sustainable urban and rural development.

Accurately mapping paddy rice is crucial for food security, sustainable agricultural management and environmental protection. Recently, Sentinel-2 optical images with a spatial resolution of 10 m and a repeat cycle of five days have demonstrated enormous potential for mapping paddy fields. However, the influence of the temporal selection of Sentinel-2 optical images on mapping paddy rice is still unclear. In this study, the optimal temporal windows were detected by considering all possible temporal combinations during the growing stages from the constructed cloud-free 10-day time series and assessing the classification performances of all combination schemes on paddy rice mapping by F1_score. The results indicated that the combination of two or three phases is necessary for mapping early-cropping paddy rice (EP) and late-cropping paddy rice (LP), achieving the F1_score aim of 0.96. The detection of single-cropping paddy rice (SP) requires a combination of three to five phases and can obtain the F1_score aim of 0.94. Additionally, an automatic workflow for paddy rice mapping has been developed, which does not require any cloud removal but provides complete spatial coverage, suitable for regions with frequent rain and clouds. Through verification in the study area of Yiwu, China, the discrepancies between mapping results and agricultural statistics were within 5%, demonstrating the rationality and efficiency of the proposed framework.

The relationship between ecosystem services (ESs) and human well-being (HWB) is a central issue of sustainable development. However, current research often relies on qualitative frameworks or indicator-based assessments, limiting a comprehensive understanding of the relationship between natural environment and human acquisition, which still needs to be strengthened. As an element transferred in the natural–society coupling system, carbon can assist in characterizing the dynamic interactions within coupled human–natural systems. Carbon, as a fundamental element transferred across ecological and social spheres, offers a powerful lens to characterize these linkages. This study develops and applies a novel analytical framework that integrates carbon flow as a unifying metric to quantitatively assess the spatiotemporal dynamics of the land use and land cover change (LUCC)–ESs–HWB nexus in Guizhou Province, China, from 2000 to 2020. The results show that: (1) Ecosystem services in Guizhou showed distinct trends from 2000 to 2020: supporting and regulating services declined and then recovered, and provisioning services steadily increased, while cultural services remained stable but varied across cities. (2) Human well-being generally improved over time, with health remaining stable and the HSI rising across most cities, although security levels fluctuated and remained low in some areas. (3) The contribution of ecosystem services to human well-being peaked in 2010–2015, followed by declines in central and northern regions, while southern and western areas maintained or improved their levels. (4) Supporting and regulating services were positively correlated with HWB security, while cultural services showed mixed effects, with strong synergies between culture and health in cities like Liupanshui and Qiandongnan. Overall, this study quantified the coupled dynamics between ecosystem services and human well-being through a carbon flow framework, which not only offers a unified metric for cross-dimensional analysis but also reduces subjective bias in evaluation. This integrated approach provides critical insights for crafting spatially explicit land management policies in Guizhou and offers a replicable methodology for exploring sustainable development pathways in other ecologically fragile karst regions worldwide. Compared with conventional ecosystem service frameworks, the carbon flow approach provides a process-based, dynamic mediator that quantifies biogeochemical linkages in LUCC–ESs–HWB systems, which is particularly important in fragile karst regions. However, we acknowledge that further empirical comparison with traditional ESs metrics could strengthen the framework’s generalizability.

Globally, urbanization is accelerating, with China witnessing a significant 40% rise in urbanization rate over the past 4 decades. However, the dynamic changes in the spatial coupling between infrastructure and utilization intensity during the early, middle, and late stages of urbanization are not clear. The trajectory of development and coupling within the urbanization process is crucial for understanding issues such as urban over-saturation and urban shrinkage. Using Hegang in Northeastern China as an example, we utilized high-resolution remote sensing data, examined the construction intensity of urban land use, analyzed the degree of coupling with utilization efficiency, and clarified the dynamic evolution of the binary relationship system between development and coupling. Results show that Hegang’s construction intensity has seen a continuous rise from 1992 to 2000, with a 200.06% increase over 28 years, while its coupling with utilization efficiency has experienced a significant drop in the 21st century, suggesting a persistent decline in the utilization of buildings and a notable urban shrinkage phenomenon. Considering development status and coupling degree, we delineate a characteristic urbanization state curve for Hegang, reflecting its progression through stages of “Underdeveloped, Highly coupled,” to “Underdeveloped, Weakly coupled”, and finally to “Highly developed, Weakly coupled”, offering insights into its urban development path. This research not only establishes a foundational data groundwork for future land-use planning in Hegang but also presents a replicable template for urbanization path analysis in other cities, contributing to a broader understanding of urban development dynamics.
