Maize is one of the top five field crops worldwide and is indispensable as animal feed, serves as a raw material in many industries, and is a staple for human food. However, its production is under increasing pressure mainly due to abiotic stress. Drought and excessive precipitation, air temperature fluctuations, and reduced soil fertility due to inadequate soil pH reactions are among the biggest challenges that must be overcome. Therefore, the goal of this study was to determine the effects of these combined stressful abiotic conditions on maize grain yield and quality and to determine the genetic-specific response of maize genotypes in such conditions. The experiment was set up in eastern Croatia according to the randomized complete block design in four replications. A total of 10 maize hybrids of different FAO maturity groups were evaluated across four diverse environments, each subjected to one or two abiotic stresses (extreme precipitation, drought, high air temperatures, and acidic soil). Analysis of variance revealed that all treatment effects were statistically significant, except for the effect of hybrids on grain yield. Depending on the effect of abiotic stress, the variations among environments were up to 51.4% for yield and up to 12.1%, 18.9%, and 0.81% for protein, oil, and starch content, respectively. Differences among hybrids were less pronounced for yield (7.9%), while for protein (13.5%), oil (17.3%), and starch content (1.5%) were similar. However, the largest variation was found for the interaction effect. In the conducted research, ENV2 recorded the highest grain yield, along with the highest oil and starch content, as well as the second-highest protein content, while the hybrid effect remained unclear. Generally, ENV4 had the greatest negative impact due to the combined effects of extreme abiotic stresses, including soil acidity, drought, and high air temperatures.

Even though wheat’s response to nitrogen (N) is well studied, practical optimization remains challenging because yield and seed quality often react inconsistently across seasons. For winter wheat, the simultaneous quantification of efficiency indicators that capture N losses and diminishing returns is important. This study evaluated nitrogen (N) fertilization in two growing seasons. This study aimed to adjust N fertilization strategy through different combinations of granular N timing and foliar applications to improve winter wheat yield and technological seed quality while maintaining high fertilization efficiency. Field experiments were conducted over two growing seasons (2021/2022 and 2022/2023) using seven fertilization treatments (Control, TSE_1, TSE_2, TSEH_1, TSEH_2, TSEH_3, and TSH, which correspond to growth stage T—tillering stage; SE—stem elongation phase; H—heading stage) in the range of 140.5 to 194.5 kg ha−1 N. Seed yield and seed quality traits (moisture, hectoliter weight, starch, protein, gluten, and sedimentation value) were measured, and treatment effects were evaluated with ANOVA, correlation, and regression analyses. In 2021/2022, no significant treatment effects were detected for yield or seed quality parameters, indicating that environmental variability dominated crop response. In contrast, in 2022/2023, seed yield, hectoliter weight, gluten content, and starch yield showed significant treatment effects (p ≤ 0.05–0.01), with fertilized variants generally outperforming the Control. Across both seasons, seed quality traits displayed strong internal structure: protein, gluten, and sedimentation were strongly positively correlated, while starch was strongly negatively correlated with these traits and the yield correlated positively with hectoliter weight but negatively with protein and gluten, highlighting a yield–quality trade-off. Importantly, partial factor productivity (PFP) and nitrogen use efficiency (NUE) showed the strongest treatment sensitivity, demonstrating their value for identifying efficient N strategies even when yield and quality responses were season-dependent. Regression analyses confirmed that seasonal conditions modulated nitrogen responsiveness, with NUE and starch yield showing much stronger relationships with nitrogen input in 2021/2022 and 2022/2023, respectively.

In a field trial, a database of qualitative traits associated with agromorphological and quality traits of winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) has been collected. The present study aimed to determine the relationships between the winter wheat traits of productivity and quality with traits of Distinctness, Uniformity and Stability (DUS) testing. In addition, according to grain yield and significantly correlated traits, investigated genotypes will be clustered. Grain yield was significantly positively correlated with the number of days to heading, time of ear emergence, and plant growth habit. Based on the grouping of the winter wheat genotypes using the Euclidean distance algorithm, wheat genotypes were separated into five main clusters according to the similarity of those four traits. The grouping pattern was very origin homogeneous in each group, and the grouping pattern of genotypes appeared to be associated. The highest contributor to a grouping of genotypes was grain yield. The established result pertain to the potential for increasing the grain yield of winter wheat.
