This work aims to investigate the key role of local community through volunteerism experience in small-scale sport events and the impact that the community engagement in small sport events can have on the local destination in terms of sustainable tourism. To do this analysis, the authors take into consideration the triple bottom line approach. Given the interdisciplinary character of sustainability, the chapter investigates the relation between small sport events and community, underlining two main aspects: the strategic role of volunteers in terms of community capabilities and the impact that small sport events have on local community in terms of social cohesion and local identity. Small-scale sport events, indeed, strengthen the sense of community and tradition, thus attracting visitors. In the last section of the chapter, an interesting case study and a series of sustainable tourism indicators are illustrated.

Industry 4.0 can be considered the 21st century's industrial revolution and will soon be the new form of manufacturing delight. The definitive customer would experience manufacturing requests determined by artificial intelligence, machine learning, and automated technologies linked with data science support for gauging customer necessities. Phenomenally, Industry 4.0 is rapidly changing the firm's management and organizational systems, and competencies, as well as making its environment much more explored, even if more complexed than in the past. This new industrial revolution would possess systems with transformative technologies for managing interconnected systems between its physical assets and computational capabilities. Such enterprises would require skilled workforce to improve and operate advanced manufacturing tools and systems, and investigate the machine data, clients, and global capitals, resulting in an escalating need for trained employees proficient in cross-functional capacities and with competencies to cope new processes and IT systems.

The paper focuses on the topic of the relationship between coopetition and innovation as well as on their impact on competitive advantage. Before getting to the central issue, a literature review on the topic of coopetition is carried out, in order to catch the existing gaps as well as to single out the paths for future development on the topic. Starting with a bibliometric analysis, the research then focuses on the contents of the contemporary literature, analyzing the main approaches internationally developed. The hint is to study the relationship between innovation and coopetition (in terms of antecedents) and then the impact of innovation-based coopetition or of coopetition-based innovation on firm performance.

Increased awareness about the importance of a safe, healthy nutrition has changed human interactions with food and increased worldwide demand for high quality and ethical food. In this respect, the purpose of this paper is to highlight the concept of ethical food and the nature of kosher food production, assessing common traits and the main differences between the two. A literature review was undertaken in order to verify the direction in which further studies might proceed. A research review on current literature was carried out exploring concepts of ethical food and food certification underpinning kosher businesses by means of an analysis of both producers’ and consumers’ perspectives. In order to proceed with an accurate analysis, the paper matches both the conceptual analysis and the bibliometric one. The overlap between these two forms of analysis makes results robust and useful for future research. This review reveals common points between ethical and kosher food because attention is given to both processes and products and the way the market perceives them as expressions of trustworthy and safe production. Furthermore, the analysis reveals an under emphasis on kosher food in the academic world and the results reveal the importance of empirical analysis. The analysis is focused mainly on kosher food production as an expression of ethical food. It would be interesting, however, to expand the analysis to other types of ethical certification such as Halal food, for example, in order to perform comparative evaluations. From a practical point of view, it is interesting to note that kosher food is conceived as very safe food and that non-religious people are sensitive to this, which opens new horizons for ethical food. It also offers the possibility that firms that have never considered entering the field of ethical food certification may do so to expand their businesses. This implication also reveals that there is a higher attention on sustainability and safety in agro-food market. Therefore there are great opportunities of expansion for ethical food. From a social point of view, this paper is of importance for several reasons. It deals with a relatively new and relatively unexplored issue; it points out the relevance of sustainability and safety in food market and consumer behavior, it presents the possibility of exploring knowledge interactions between different perspectives (multidisciplinary approach) and cultures which, in the opinion, will present significant challenge in relation to agro-food business research in the future. The originality of this work is that of systematizing a literature review of ethical food, enlarging its scope and boundaries with specific reference to kosher food. It also highlights the need to focus on both management and marketing, since up to now there has been a lack of academic contributions to these areas of research. Directions for further research are outlined.

Purpose Over the past few years, several scholars have focused on innovation strategies with specific regard to family food firms. In line with this research stream, the purpose of this paper is to understand how family food firms with long-standing traditions can implement innovative productions while remaining anchored to the past. Design/methodology/approach By adopting a qualitative research methodology, mainly based on a multiple case study, this paper seeks to cover some unexplored areas regarding the opportunity of combining tradition and innovation to achieve success in the highly competitive international arena in which family food firms operate. The authors analyze the cases of “La Torrente,” “Cioccolatitaliani” and “La Fabbrica della Pasta di Gragnano.” Findings Successful family food firms leverage their deep-rooted knowledge of both family and local traditions to innovate. At same time, they establish continuous info exchange flows with all of the firm’s stakeholders by adopting an open innovation approach. Research limitations/implications From a theoretical perspective, there is a need for an in-depth study of how an effective blend of tradition and innovation is formalized, above all, in family firms. As for the practical implications, all the three case studies represent a best practice, especially for family firms with a long-standing history and strong local connections. Practical implications The paper shows how important it is to keep traditional factors in food industry and offers hints and suggestions to decision makers of family firms on how to valorize, in terms of competitiveness, their traditional resources – almost bound to their territory with innovation tools and processes. Social implications The paper is interesting because it offers an analysis of a specific group of firms – family firms – that characterize many industries in Italy and in Europe. Although often small, these firms can show dynamism and creativity. The paper offers hints on how to approach innovation in the sector while keeping the value of tradition. Originality/value The originality of the proposed conceptual model stems from the need to overcome the previous theoretical models, which deal separately with sources of past knowledge and sources of new and/or external knowledge.

This paper has a double challenge: (a) focusing on distrustful situations in interfirm collaboration; (b) clarifying the concept and role of destination governance, with specific attention to the situations of distrust or difficult processes of trust building between potential or actual partners. These objectives are verified in an empirical setting. It has been conducted a statistical survey on tourism firms operating in Italy, and through a dependent analysis, we have verified a very low real approach towards the idea of a governing pivotal actor in these well developed tourist areas. The current study has verified whether and to what extent distrust persists and if the diffusion of trust depends on the presence of leading actors also comparing the 2 areas.

This paper focuses on the application of Resource-Based Theory (RBT) in the marketing research literature, underlining its importance as a framework, in order to explain the achievement of sustainable competitive advantage and better firm performance through resource management processes and the implementation of marketing capabilities. We conduct an extensive literature review of the application of RBT in marketing research, analysing works where RBT and marketing theories/approaches overlap, in order to understand and reason why RBT is implemented as a theoretical framework and what aspects have been reinforced by both theoretical and empirical research. This analysis tries to offer insights and guidelines on how to improve the use of RBT in marketing, and suggests research directions to advance the conceptual in-depth analysis and the empirical testing of RBT in the future.

This paper aims at analysing conceptually spiritual leadership in the organizational field. First, we identify if a relation between spirituality and leadership can exist and then if and how this influences employer/employees reciprocal behaviour. In the early years, the focus has changed, trying to deepen the differences between religion and spirituality and emphasizing the last one as a source of success for leaders. We focused on the understanding of the effects that spirituality has on the system of values and the role of values and emotions in determining a successful leader. Finally, we emphasize the role of values-based leadership capabilities within strategic management, aiming at highlighting the importance of a shared system of values in leading employees.

Literature on entrepreneurial creativity has been widely developed in the last decades, with attention both to the process and to its origins and antecedents. The aim of this paper is to systematize the literature on the topic, in order to better clarify the concept of entrepreneurial creativity in its main features and components. The issue still shows rather fragmented contributions on the concept of entrepreneurial creativity in different disciplines, within a very complex multidimensional construct. Therefore, we propose a literature review whose main purpose is to get to an overview of the state-of-art on entrepreneurial creativity and to identify still unanswered issues within this stream of research.

This Management and Organization Review (MOR) special issue on ‘Coopetition and Innovation in Transforming Economies’ aims to explore key features of the strategic relationship between coopetition and innovation in transforming economies. It is generally accepted that innovation can be a fundamental driver for economic growth, new sources of employment, and dwindling economic disparity. However, increasingly activities of innovation no longer take place primarily within the firm but are often the outcome of the overall set of relationships of the firm. The two phenomena of competition and cooperation have become more and more inter-related, thus creating new opportunities, affecting innovation and change. This reality is of special interest in the context of transforming economies’ transition to higher value adding economic growth and development due to, for example, the specific moderating or mediating role of national cultures and philosophical inspiration (e.g., Taoism, Confucianism, Hinduism, and Buddhism) in shaping the coopetitive mindset (Dagnino, Di Guardo, & Padula, 2012) and the potential differentiation between countries and regional ecologies.

The aim of this paper is to analyze the meanings and the contents of innovation and its role in museums and heritage sites’ management to create higher levels of competitiveness. Through a complex framework, we investigate the key role of innovation in determining the competitive advantage. We propose a theoretical model to study smart and open innovation in cultural services, with specific reference to museums and heritage sites, building up an ‘innovation indicator’, in order to measure the nature and the intensity of innovation as well as to identify how it can be leveraged to sustain a business-oriented approach and to get competitive advantage. This latter is conceived in strategic terms, using a resource-based theory approach: competitive advantage is therefore considered with respect to both economic and social performance, market and competitive positioning. We apply our index on a group of innovative selected cases of museums and heritage sites using nonlinear principal component analysis and hierarchical clustering. Empirical results show that smart innovation seems to be a necessary path to achieve competitive parity but it is not sufficient for competitive advantage.
