Valerie C. A. Ward is a faculty member in the Chemical Engineering
Department at the University of Waterloo and the director of the Microalgae Biomanufacturing Lab. She received her Ph.D. degree in
Biochemical Engineering from Western University in 2016. She holds a
Post-doctoral Fellowship from Massachusetts Institute of Technology from 2017-2018.
Her primary focus is the use of microalgae, metabolic engineering, and ionic
liquid-based separations in biological systems. She has made significant
contributions to the development of direct catalysis of wet biomass to
biodiesel using ionic liquids, metabolic engineering of microorganisms for
isoprenoid production, and bioprocess development for recombinant protein production and purification.
