Metalenses consist of nanostructures that locally control the optical phase. They offer many degrees of freedom for manipulating a wavefront, which gives a number of advantages over bulk lenses, such as the straightforward elimination of spherical aberrations and an ultrathin dimension. Here, we compare the phase profiles of metalenses made of different dielectric materials and note the advantage of high refractive index materials. Higher refractive index materials such as silicon afford more degrees of freedom in terms of design and fabrication and are the basis for high-performance metalenses, even in the visible. Nevertheless, the imaging performance of single-element metalenses is still limited by coma and chromatic aberrations. This limitation is exacerbated by high numerical apertures and large areas. We review the challenges and trade-offs between numerical aperture, field of view, coma, chromatic aberration, and size. We also evaluate different phase engineering approaches to address these problems. We believe this review will help guide future developments in high-performance metalenses toward wide-field and high-resolution imaging, enabling scientific high-end miniature imaging systems.

Solar cells can strongly benefit from optical strategies capable of providing the desired broadband absorption of sunlight and consequent high conversion efficiency. While many diffractive light-trapping structures prove high absorption enhancements, their industrial application rather depends on simplicity concerning the integration to the solar cell concept and the process technology. Here, we show how simple grating lines can perform as well as advanced light-trapping designs. We use a shallow and periodic grating as the basic element of a quasi-random structure, which is highly suitable for industrial mass production. Its checkerboard arrangement breaks the mirror symmetry and is shown, for instance, to enhance the bulk current of a 1 µm slab of crystalline silicon by 125%. We explain its excellent performance by drawing a direct link between a structure’s Fourier series and the implied photocurrent, derived from a large and diverse set of structures. Our design rule thus meets all relevant aspects of light-trapping for solar cells, clearing the way for simple, practical, and yet outstanding diffractive structures, with a potential impact beyond photonic applications.

Metalenses are nanostructured surfaces with great potential for delivering miniaturized and integrated optical systems. A key property of metalenses is that, by using a double layer configuration, or doublet, they can achieve both diffraction‐limited resolution and wide field‐of‐view imaging. The physical operation and limitations of such doublet systems, however, are still not fully understood, and designs are still based on numerical optimization of the phase profiles. Here, we show the fundamental limits of doublet systems and provide a universal design strategy without any need to resort to numerical optimization. We find an analytical relationship between the focal length and the spacer thickness; we identify the physical principles underlying the limitations on performance and obtain a universal dependence of the field of view as a function of resolution (numerical aperture). Our results will allow researchers to appreciate the regimes of resolution and field of view that are accessible for specific applications, to identify the conditions for optimum performance (such as required spacer thickness), and to conveniently design doublets without needing to resort to numerical optimizations.

In this letter, we design and fabricate a three-dimensional printed all-dielectric planar metalens for microwave focusing into a receiving antenna. The structure allows the antenna gain to be increased by 7.5 dB at 32.5 GHz with a bandwidth of 2.4 GHz. The metalens has a focus full-width at half-maximum of ∼0.85λ with a 3 dB depth-of-focus of approximately 5 cm. We show that the antenna half-power beamwidth can be reduced from 36° to 3° in the azimuthal plane and from 4.5° to 3° in the elevation plane with the help of the metalens. In addition, we demonstrate that the metalens performs equally well at oblique incidence, with a 50° and 40° span in the azimuthal and elevation planes, respectively.

This paper reports on the first hologram in transmission mode based on a c-Si metasurface in the visible range. The hologram shows high fidelity and high efficiency, with measured transmission and diffraction efficiencies of ~65% and ~40%, respectively. Although originally designed to achieve full phase control in the range [0-2π] at 532 nm, these holograms have also performed well at 444.9 nm and 635 nm. The high tolerance to both fabrication and wavelength variations demonstrate that holograms based on c-Si metasurfaces are quite attractive for diffractive optics applications, and particularly for full-color holograms.
