Cobalt coordination complexes are very attractive compounds for their therapeutic uses as antiviral, antibacterial, antifungal, antiparasitic, or antitumor agents. Two Co(III) complexes with diamine chelate ligands ([CoCl2(dap)2]Cl (1) and [CoCl2(en)2]Cl (2)) (where dap = 1,3-diaminopropane, en = ethylenediamine) were synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis, an ATR technique, and a scan method and sequentially tested against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. The minimum inhibitory concentration results revealed that anaerobic and microaerophilic bacteria were found to be the most sensitive; the serial passages assay presented insignificant increases in bacterial resistance to both compounds after 20 passages. The synergy assay showed a significant reduction in the MIC values of nalidixic acid when combined with Compounds (1) or (2). The assessment of cell damage by the complexes was performed using scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and confocal microscopy, which indicated cell membrane permeability, deformation, and altered cell morphology. DNA interaction studies of the Co(III) complexes with plasmid pBR322 using spectrophotometric titration methods revealed that the interaction between Complex (1) or (2) and DNA suggested an electrostatic and intercalative mode of binding, respectively. Furthermore, the DNA cleavage ability of compounds by agarose gel electrophoresis showed nuclease activity for both complexes. The results suggest that the effect of the tested compounds against bacteria can be complex.

Influence of 12-tungstophosphoric acid (WPA) on conversion of adenosine triphosphate (ATP) to adenosine diphosphate (ADP) in the presence of Na+/K+-ATPase was monitored by 31P NMR spectroscopy. It was shown that WPA exhibits inhibitory effect on Na+/K+-ATPase activity. In order to study WPA reactivity and intermolecular interactions between WPA oxygen atoms and different proton donor types (D=O, N, C), we have considered data for WPA based compounds from the Cambridge Structural Database (CSD), the Crystallographic Open Database (COD) and the Inorganic Crystal Structure Database (ICSD). Binding properties of Keggin's anion in biological systems are illustrated using Protein Data Bank (PDB). This work constitutes the first determination of theoretical Bader charges on polyoxotungstate compound via the Atom In Molecule theory. An analysis of electrostatic potential maps at the molecular surface and charge of WPA, resulting from DFT calculations, suggests that the preferred protonation site corresponds to WPA bridging oxygen. These results enlightened WPA chemical reactivity and its potential biological applications such as the inhibition of the ATPase activity.

The aim of the study was to investigate the impact of three types of polysiloxane microspheres on the barrier properties, structure and mechanical properties of paper. An influence of new silicon filler on properties of cellulose paper sheet was analyzed. Polysiloxane microspheres were used as an additive introduced into the network of cellulosic fibers in order to obtain new functional properties of the paper. The following types of microspheres were used in the research: M1 hydrophilic of average diameter 23.5 µm, M2 hydrophobic of average diameter 3.1 µm and M3 hydrophobic of average diameter 23.5 µm. The obtained handsheets were analyzed for changes in apparent density, roughness, tensile strength, bursting strength, and tear resistance. Wettability and resistance to liquid were characterized by contact angle measurement, penetration dynamics analysis and uniformity of liquid penetration measured using an extended liquid penetration analyser. It was found that the presence of M2 (small diameter) microspheres improved significantly the paper’s hydrophobicity without changing the mechanical properties. The addition of M1 and M3 (large diameter) microspheres decreased the mechanical properties of the paper samples and did not improve their hydrophobicity. However, M1 microspheres resulted in increased uniformity of liquid penetration through the paper structure. The presented studies also show that it is possible to obtain paper with high hydrophobic properties only through the filling application when polysiloxane microspheres are used for this purpose. The results also indicate that it is not necessary to hydrophobize the entire material structure in order to achieve its high hydrophobicity. Graphic

A simple and inexpensive method for the preparation of porous SiC microspheres is presented. Polysiloxane microspheres derived from polyhydromethylsiloxane (PHMS) cross-linked with divinylbenzene (DVB) were ceramized under conditions leading to the removal of oxygen from the material. The content of free carbon (Cf) in highly crystalline silicon carbide (SiC) particles can be controlled by using various proportions of DVB in the synthesis of the pre-ceramic material. The chemical structure of the ceramic microspheres was studied by elemental analysis for carbon and oxygen, 29Si MAS NMR, 13C MAS NMR, SEM/EDS, XRD and Raman spectroscopies, and their morphology by SEM, nitrogen adsorption and mercury intrusion porosimetries. The gaseous products of the thermal reduction processes formed during ceramization created a porous structure of the microspheres. In the SiC/Cf microspheres, meso/micro pores were formed, while in carbon-free SiC, microspheres macroporosity dominated.
