Cystic lesions of the maxilla are benign entities with both odontogenic and non-odontogenic origins. The maxillary cyst is a benign tumor of the bones of the jaw, which has a membrane and contains a fluid, semi-solid or mixed (liquid / semi-gaseous) material. These often lead to deformities in the jaw area. Cases are specific by framing pathological rarity, etiology, pathogenesis and clinical symptoms. Considering the large entity of cystic formations that can be found in the maxilla region, we selected two patients with cystic formations of the upper jaw, which were part of different pathological etiology categories, with special rarity occurring, evolutionary appearance and difficult to classify in terms of pathognomonic signs.

Sinusitis not properly treated can generate multiple complications. Among these complications, oculo-orbital manifestations can be difficult to treat and can lead to vision loss, despite modern antibiotic therapy. In this paper, we aimed to discuss the orbital complications of rhinosinusitis, especially orbital cellulitis, and the method of treatment, highlighted by the presentation of a clinical case diagnosed and treated medically and surgically in the ENT and Ophthalmology Departments, within the Braila County Emergency Clinical Hospital.

Inverted papilloma is a benign tumor that can become malignant. It most commonly develops on the lateral rhinosinusal wall and has a maximum incidence in the ethmoid cells. In most cases, it occurs unilaterally, the main symptom being nasal obstruction. Treatment can generally be performed through endoscopic sinus surgery, involving total resection due to its malignancy potential and risk of recurrence. Given the increased interest in this pathology, we present the most important aspects of sinonasal inverted papilloma, from etiology to therapeutic management, exemplifying with a case from our own experience.

The cases with sphenoid sinusitis associated with abducens nerve palsy are rarely cited in the literature. We present the case of a 41-year-old patient who was hospitalized for right hemicrania and ipsilateral paresis of the abducens nerve, without any other ENT previous pathology. The ENT, ophthalmologic, neurological and paraclinical evaluations (nasal endoscopy, MRI examination) have established the diagnosis of right sphenoid rhinosinusitis complicated with unilateral abducens nerve palsy. In such cases, it is important to make a differential diagnosis with tumor pathology as well as that of an infection outbreak located intracranially. In this case, the patient’s evolution was favourable after endoscopic surgical treatment of the sphenoid rhinosinusitis.

Lacrimal stents were used in the past to preserve the caliber of the lacrimal pathways after surgery, trauma, reconstruction, etc. Recently, their role in preventing functional epiphora has also been highlighted. Over the years, the stents have evolved and different models, materials and surgical techniques for positioning have appeared. Extensive and accurate knowledge of the type and design of the stent, the correct insertion technique offer optimal results depending on the anatomical area and the type of disorder of the lacrimal pathways. We will present the advantages of a simple catheterization technique for the lacrimal sac, endoscopic post-dacryocystorhinostomy.

Background. In the last decade, it was concluded that glaucomatous optic neuropathy is part of the neurodegenerative diseases in which destructive neuronal lesions are located not only in the structure of the retina, but they are also present at the level of the central visual and nervous pathways. Patients with Primitive Open Angle Glaucoma may have experienced changes such as sensorineural hearing loss as well as balance changes. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the degree of involvement of the auditory system in patients with glaucoma, the structural changes in the optic nerve and, to establish correlation between the hearing loss and structural changes in the optic nerve. The subjects included in the study are grouped as follows: a group of patients with glaucoma that will be compared to a group of patients without glaucoma only as well as identi-fy-ing the evolution of structural changes in optic nerve to patients with glaucoma and to normal patients. Material and methods. It is a prospective, cross-sectional study on 32 eyes of 16 subjects with Primitive Open Angle Glaucoma in a study group and 24 eyes of 12 healthy subjects in con-trol group with a mean age of 62 years in both groups. Both groups underwent ophthalmo-logical, audiological and radio imaging evaluation: Pure-tone audiometry (PTA) were recorded, oph-thalmologic evaluations according to a standardized protocol and MRI cerebral examination was performed. Results: In the Study group patients, compared to the Control group, the average lev-els of the left PTA, the cup/disc (C/D) area in both eyes, the C/D ratio in both eyes are in-creased. The mean level of Retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) mean thickness was slightly lower in patients with glaucoma. Multivariate analysis demonstrates that gender can be a good predictor of C/D area, gender and age can be good predictors of PTA both eyes and C/D ratio in the right eye, and gender, age and background can be good predictors of disc area in the left eye. Conclu-sions: Pa-tients with Primitive Open Angle Glaucoma show changes in audiometry test in correla-tion with ophthalmological parameters demonstrating that the auditory system can be affected in Primitive Open Angle Glaucoma. This study emphasizes the problem of interdisciplinarity in medicine with the aim of ensuring the quality of life of patients with glaucoma. A good collabora-tion between ophthalmologist and otolaryngologist will be very useful for these patients.
