The Internet of Things (IoT) has greatly facilitated our daily lives. Nevertheless, how to achieve higher spectral efficiency, large-scale device access, and lower latency for the next-generation IoT is still a challenge. Inspired by this, a nonorthogonal multiple access (NOMA)-assisted cognitive radio (CR) IoT network is proposed in this article, where the communication between the indoor secondary transmitter and secondary receivers is performed in the presence of an eavesdropper and under the constraint of secondary transmit power. In particular, we introduce simultaneously transmitting and reflecting reconfigurable intelligent surface (STAR-RIS) into the secondary network to assist the secondary transmitter to communicate with its receivers in different rooms. To characterize the reliability and security of the proposed system, we derive analytical approximate expressions for the outage probabilities (OPs) and intercept probabilities (IPs) by using the Gaussian–Chebyshev quadrature. With the aim of providing a deeper understanding, we also explore the impacts of transmission signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs), power allocation coefficient and the number of STAR-RIS elements on the system performance. Presented numerical results show that: 1) the OPs of near and far users gradually decrease with SNRs until floors appear at high SNR, and the floors of near user is always lower than that of far user; 2) IPs increasing with SNRs and near user is always less than far user, which proves that near user has better security; and 3) under appropriate parameters, the tradeoff between reliability and security of the considered system can be arisen.

Low power consumption and high spectrum efficiency as the great challenges for multi-device access to Internet-of-Things (IoT) have put forward stringent requirements on the future intelligent network. Ambient backscatter communication (ABcom) is regarded as a promising technology to cope with the two challenges, where backscatter device (BD) can reflect ambient radio frequency (RF) signals without additional bandwidth. However, minimalist structural design of BD makes ABcom security vulnerable in wireless propagation environments. By virtue of this fact, this paper considers the physical layer security (PLS) of a wireless-powered ambient backscatter cooperative communication network threatened by an eavesdropper, where the BD with nonlinear energy harvesting model cooperates with decode-and-forward (DF) relay for secure communication. The PLS performance is investigated by deriving the secrecy outage probability (SOP) and secrecy energy efficiency (SEE). Specifically, the closed-form and asymptotic expressions of SOP are derived as well as the secrecy diversity order for the first time. As an energy-constrained device, balancing power consumption and security is major concern for BD, thus the SEE of the proposed network is studied. The results from numerical analysis show that the performance improvement of SOP and SEE is impacted by system parameters, including transmit power, secrecy rate threshold, reflection efficiency and distance between the source and BD, which provide guidance on balancing security and energy efficiency in ambient backscatter cooperative relay networks.

In this paper, we consider an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)-enabled massive multiple-input multiple-out (MIMO) non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) full-duplex (FD) two-way relay (TWR) system with low-resolution analog-to-digital converters/digital-to-analog converters (ADCs/DACs), where the UAV provide services for multi-pair ground users (GUs). By employing maximum ratio combining/maximum ratio transmission (MRC/MRT), the approximate closed-form expressions for sum spectrum/energy efficiency (SE/EE) with imperfect channel state information (CSI), imperfect successive interference cancellation (SIC) and quantization noise are derived. To evaluate the effects of the parameters on system performance, the asymptotic analysis and the power scaling laws are further provided. Finally, an optimization scheme is proposed to maximize the SE of the considered system. The numerical results verify the accuracy of theoretical analysis and show that the interference and noise can be effectively eliminated by deploying large-scale antennas and applying proper power scaling law. We also demonstrate that the proposed system can obtain better SE by adjusting the height of the UAV. Moreover, the system performance is related to the ADCs/DACs quantization bits, where the SE saturation values increase by increasing number of quantization bits, while the EE first increases and then decreases. Finally, the SE/EE trade-off at low precision ADCs/DACs can be achieved by choosing the appropriate number of quantization bits, and the trade-off region grows as Rician factor increases.

Millimeter waves have been recognized as carriers for 5G cellular networks. We carried out a series of millimeter-wave measurements in Beijing, China, and studied the atmospheric impacts on millimeter-wave transmission. Our measurement design is an exemplary LOS transmission link. We also studied a 3 km long commercial E-band millimeter-wave backhaul link in Göteborg, Sweden. We monitored the variation of received signal in the rain, and compared the theoretical rain-induced signal attenuation with the practically monitored signal attenuation. Our results show that there is 1.5–4.5 dB uncertainty between the practical and theoretical rain-induced signal attenuation. Assuming the prediction of rain intensity is available, we have proposed a novel rain-aware radio resource management strategy which adapts the modulation and coding schemes of an OFDM system to rainfall events. We have applied the proposed algorithm to an OFDM - based 5G system, and the throughput result is improved. The result shows that the throughput of a fixed modulation and coding scheme system is between 12%–95% of the system employing the proposed algorithm during rainfall events.

High-resolution and accurate rainfall monitoring is of great importance to many applications, including meteorology, hydrology, and flood monitoring. In recent years, microwave backhaul links from wireless communication networks have been suggested for rainfall monitoring purposes, complementing the existing monitoring systems. With the advances in microwave technology, new microwave backhaul solutions have been proposed and applied for 5G networks. Examples of the latest microwave technology include E-band (71–76 and 81–86 GHz) links, multi-band boosters, and line-of-sight multiple-input multiple-output (LOS-MIMO) backhaul links. They all rely on millimeter-wave (mmWave) technology, which is the fastest small-cell backhaul solution. In this paper, we will study the rain attenuation characteristics of these new microwave backhaul techniques at different mmWave frequencies and link lengths. We will also study the potential of using these new microwave solutions for rainfall monitoring. Preliminary results indicate that all the test mmWave links can be very effective for estimating the path-averaged rain rates. The correlation between the mmWave link measurement-derived rain rate and the local rain gauge is in the range of 0.8 to 0.9, showing a great potential to use these links for precipitation and flood monitoring in urban areas.
