Background and Objectives: This study aims to investigate the relationship between isokinetic knee strength and competition performance in elite male ski mountaineering sprint athletes and to identify strength parameters that predict performance and contribute to injury prevention. Materials and Methods: Thirteen male athletes participating in the Ski Mountaineering Turkey Cup final stage were included. Isokinetic knee flexion (FLX) and extension (EXT) strength of dominant (DM) and non-dominant (NDM) legs were measured at angular velocities of 60°/s and 180°/s using the DIERS-Myolin Isometric Muscle Strength Analysis System. Competition performance was evaluated using the ISMF scoring system. Data were analyzed using SPSS 26.0 with Pearson correlation and multiple regression analyses after normality, linearity, and homoscedasticity checks. Results: Strong positive correlations were found between hamstring strength at high angular velocities (180°/s) and performance (DM FLX: r = 0.809; NDM FLX: r = 0.880). Extension strength showed moderate correlations at low velocities (60°/s) (DM EXT: r = 0.677; NDM EXT: r = 0.699). Regression analysis revealed that DM FLX at 180°/s and DM EXT at 60°/s explained 49% of performance variance (Adj. R2 = 0.498). For NDM legs, only 180°/s FLX was a significant predictor (β = 1.468). Conclusions: High-velocity hamstring strength plays a critical role in ski mountaineering sprint performance, particularly during sudden directional changes and dynamic balance. Quadriceps strength at low velocities contributes to prolonged climbing phases. Moreover, identifying and addressing bilateral strength asymmetries may support injury prevention strategies in elite ski mountaineering athletes. These findings provide scientific support for designing training programs targeting explosive hamstring strength, bilateral symmetry, and injury risk reduction, essential for optimizing performance in the 2026 Winter Olympics sprint discipline.

This study was conducted using a pretest-posttest control group quasi-experimental design to examine the effects of a 12-week complex training method on the physical performance of licensed fencing male athletes aged 11-14. The study included 24 fencing athletes (Experimental Group: n=12; Control Group: n=12) from a sports club in Istanbul who volunteered to participate. The experimental group underwent a complex training programme three days a week in addition to their routine fencing training, while the control group continued with their routine training only. The participants' vertical jump, seated medicine ball throw, specific direction change, and reaction time performances were evaluated as pre-test and post-test. The data were analysed using the SPSS software package. Multivariate mixed ANOVA was used in the analysis of the data. According to the findings, the 12-week complex training programme significantly improved the vertical jump and specific direction change performance of fencing athletes (p<0.05). In addition, the experimental group showed more significant improvement than the control group in the reaction time test. In the seated medicine ball throw test, both groups showed similar improvement. The findings support the idea that complex training has a positive effect on the physical performance of fencing athletes (p<0.05). In conclusion, the complex training method contributes to meaningful and positive improvements in performance components such as vertical jump, specific direction change, and reaction time in fencing athletes. Based on these findings, it is recommended that complex training be used as a performance-enhancing method in the fencing discipline.

Study aim(s): This systematic review aims to provide a comprehensive examination of the multifaceted effects of low energy availability (LEA) and its progression to sport-related Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport (RED-S) on performance, recovery, injury risk, and long-term health outcomes in elite female athletes. Methods: This study was conducted as a systematic review in accordance with PRISMA standards. A comprehensive literature search was performed using keywords such as "RED-S," "LEA," "elite female athletes," "performance," "recovery," "injury risk," and "long-term health". Methodological quality and risk of bias (RoB) were assessed using appropriate tools, including the Cochrane RoB for randomized controlled trials and the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale for observational studies. Findings were then thematically synthesized into four primary domains: performance, recovery and metabolic function, injury risk, and long-term health. Results: The findings consistently demonstrate that LEA, the primary cause of RED-S, has significant adverse effects across multiple physiological systems. High prevalence rates of LEA and RED-S risk have been reported across various sports, particularly in aesthetic and endurance disciplines (e.g., 77.4% in football, 80% in athletes exhibiting at least one RED-S symptom across sports, and 41.6% in aesthetic sports). Key consequences include metabolic slowing, hormonal axes disruption, decreased bone mineral density, impaired vascular function, and an increased risk of both bone and soft tissue injuries. Furthermore, LEA and RED-S are associated with reduced power output and impaired recovery capacity, posing a serious threat to performance sustainability and career longevity. Conclusions: LEA is a key precursor to RED-S, presenting a significant multisystemic threat to the health and performance of elite female athletes. The well-established connection between LEA-induced energy deficits and serious physiological consequences underscores the need for early diagnosis and a structured, multidisciplinary management approach. Future research should focus on longitudinal study designs, standardized measurement protocols, and the identification of sport-specific energy availability thresholds to clarify causal relationships and inform evidence-based clinical practice.
