In the past few years, the application of ionic liquids (ILs) had attracted more attention of the researchers. Many studies focused on extracting active components from traditional herbals using ILs as alternative solvents so as to address the issue caused by the traditional methods for extraction of natural products (NPs) with organic chemical reagents. Through the summary of reported research work, an overview was presented for the application of ILs or IL-based materials in the extraction of NPs, including flavonoids, alkaloids, terpenoids, phenylpropanoids and so on. Here, we mainly describe the application of ILs to rich the extraction of critical bioactive constituents that were reported possessing multiple therapeutic effects or pharmacological activities, from medicinal plants. This review could shed some light on the wide use of ILs in the field of natural products chemistry to further reduce the environmental damage caused by large quantity of organic chemical reagents.

Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is a noteworthy worldwide public health problem. It represents a complex metabolic disorder, mainly characterized as hyperglycemia and lipid dysfunction. The gut microbiota dysbiosis has been proposed to play a role in the development of diabetes. Recently, there has been considerable interest in the use of medicine food homology (MFH) and functional food herbs (FF) to ameliorate diabetes and lead to a natural and healthy life. Hence, this review compiles some reports and findings to demonstrate that the practical use of the MFH/FF can modulate the homoeostasis of gut microbiota, thereby ameliorating the development of T2DM. The results provided useful data to support further investigation of the functional basis and application of MFH/FF to treat T2DM through maintaining intestinal homeostasis.

Five undescribed butenolides including two pairs of enantiomers, (+)-asperteretal G (1a), (−)-asperteretal G (1b), (+)-asperteretal H (2a), (−)-asperteretal H (2b), asperteretal I (3), and para-hydroxybenzaldehyde derivative, (S)-3-(2,3-dihydroxy-3-methylbutyl)-4-hydroxybenzaldehyde (14), were isolated together with ten previously reported butenolides 4–13, from the coral-derived fungus Aspergillus terreus SCSIO41404. Enantiomers 1a/1b and 2a/2b were successfully purified by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) using a chiral column, and the enantiomers 1a and 1b were new natural products. Structures of the unreported compounds, including the absolute configurations, were elucidated by NMR and MS data, optical rotation, experimental and calculated electronic circular dichroism, induced circular dichroism, and X-ray crystal data. The isolated butenolides were evaluated for antibacterial, cytotoxic, and enzyme inhibitory activities. Compounds 7 and 12 displayed weak antibacterial activity, against Enterococcus faecalis (IC50 = 25 μg/mL) and Klebsiella pneumoniae (IC50 = 50 μg/mL), respectively, whereas 6 showed weak inhibitory effect on acetylcholinesterase. Nevertheless, most of the butenolides showed inhibition against pancreatic lipase (PL) with an inhibition rate of 21.2–73.0% at a concentration of 50 μg/mL.

Stephania cepharantha Hayata is a traditional Chinese herbal medicine used to treat lung cancer, and its alkaloids, especially cepharanthine (CEP), were reported to be its effective ingredients. Therefore, the extraction of potential antitumor ingredients from the plant was of interest. We first explored the optimized solvent extraction of antitumor agents from S. cepharantha Hayata guided by an in vitro antitumor activity assay. The solvent for extraction and its concentration, the liquid to material ratio, extraction duration, particle size, macerating time, and the frequency of extraction were investigated using a single-factor experiment. An orthogonal design (L9, 34) was constructed to determine the suitable extraction conditions. The crude extract was then purified sequentially by macroporous adsorption resins (MR) for the enrichment of CEP. Under these optimal conditions, the yield of total alkaloids in the herbs was 3.4%, whereas the CEP content was 2.9%. Total alkaloids exhibited significant anti-proliferative activities in the A549 cell line. Our study provides means for the further development and use of the antitumor components from S. cepharantha, which has potential for application in the pharmaceutical industry.

Estimating the age of pupa during the development time of the blow fly Chrysomya megacephala (Diptera: Calliphoridae) is of forensic significance as it assists in determining the time of colonization (TOC), which could help to determine the postmortem interval (PMI). However, establishing an objective, accurate, and efficient method for pupa age inference is still a leading matter of concern among forensic entomologists. In this study, we utilized hyperspectral imaging (HSI) technology to analyze the reflectance changes of pupa development under different temperatures (15 °C, 20 °C, 25 °C, and 30 °C). The spectrograms showed a downtrend under all temperatures. We used PCA to reduce the dimensionality of the spectral data, and then machine learning models (RF, SVR-RBF, SVR-POLY, XGBR, and Lasso) were built. RF, SVR with RBF kernel, and XGBR could show promise in accurate developmental time estimation using accumulated degree days. Among these, the XGBR model consistently exhibited the most minor errors, ranging between 3.9156 and 7.3951 (MAE). This study has identified the value of further refinement of HSI in forensic applications involving entomological specimens, and identified the considerable potential of HSI in forensic practice.

New carboxamides, (±)-vochysiamide C (1) and (+)-vochysiamide B (2), and a new polyketide, 4S,3aS,9aR-3a,9a-deoxy-3a hydroxy-1-dehydroxyarthrinone (3), were isolated and identified from the sponge-derived fungus Arthrinium sp. SCSIO 41421, together with other fifteen known natural products (4–18). Their structures including absolute configurations were determined by detailed NMR, MS spectroscopic analyses, calculated electronic circular dichroism (ECD), as well as quantum-chemical NMR calculations. Preliminary bioactivity screening and molecular docking analysis revealed that several natural products exhibited obvious enzyme inhibitory activities against acetylcholinesterase (AChE), such as 2,3,6,8-tetrahydroxy-1-methylxanthone (4) with an inhibitory rate 86% at 50 μg/mL.
