This paper aims to develop a theoretical framework based on recent service theories, such as service-dominant logic and service science, and on the concept of service ecosystems. The identification of the main elements of service ecosystems allows for pinpointing the main drivers for sustainable value co-creation, which is intended as the creation in the long run of new service solutions set up with and for end-users to guarantee a better service for the whole society. Given the high interactivity required in the relationship between players involved in digital health services, we decided to apply the developed framework to eHealth, to re-read the eHealth sector as a service ecosystem. The model is tested through a case study represented by digital healthcare in the Autonomous Province of Trento, which represents a best practice in this sector. The results confirm the presence of the main elements of the service ecosystem (actors, resource integration, technology, institutions) in the eHealth sector and show how their integration favours the creation of new resources, new uses of technology and new institutions that produce innovation and sustainable value co-creation. The originality of the work lies in the reconceptualization of the digital health sector from a new perspective based on the assumptions of service-dominant logic, that allow us to analyze the eHealth ecosystem in a holistic and system view.

Humane entrepreneurship (HumEnt) is a new model of entrepreneurship in which the attention that firms have traditionally paid to business is integrated with care for the following: firm members, the planet, and society at large. The goal of this article is to address some preliminary issues to develop a measurement scale to validate firm humane entrepreneurial orientation (HEO). The articles defines HEO beginning with the review of the main literature in terms of its three components: entrepreneurial orientation (EO), sustainable orientation (SO), and humane resource orientation (HRO). The article thereby makes some contributions with regard to how and at which organizational level the components of HEO can be measured.

The paper proposes the re-conceptualization of the smart city as a service system, in line with the recent service theories, such as Service-Dominant logic and Service Science, Management, Engineering, and Design. Starting from a short literature review about service system and smart city, a model characterized by a reticular configuration is proposed. The framework identifies the most adequate organizational layout to foster resources exchange, value co-creation and enhance co-learning among multiple actors. The goal is to highlight that the development of collaborative logics, resulting in continuous processes of cooperation between public and private decision-makers and citizens, allows multiplying moments of value creation as a result of synergistic interactions. This collaborative logic involves citizens, who are seen as a system of customers with whom objectives and knowledge are shared and with which the engagement must be sought, as they represent fundamental partners in achieving the specific objective of value co-creation. The proposed framework highlights the systemic nature of both the smart city and the service system and proposes practical and theoretical implications for public and private services management.

Starting from an assessment of the main features of local and small culinary festivals, this study analyzes their main quality dimensions by examining their effects on visitors' attitude and integrating the theory of planned behavior. In so doing, the study suggests that small culinary festivals rediscover tangible and structural aspects by exploiting basic and essential service characteristics. The study employed an on-site survey of slightly fewer than 700 attendees of three local and small Italian culinary festivals to test the hypotheses. The results of structural equation modeling suggested that food and beverage quality, staff service and information strongly determine attendee attitude toward local festivals and their revisiting intentions. The theoretical and practical implications of the findings are discussed.

Community-run festivals are an emerging giant in the tourism industry. Nowadays many local festivals have emerged with the specific objectives of celebrating local culinary traditions, establishing business and trade of local products and developing sustainable destinations. Local events can influence the destination image, enabling the growth of tourist flows and stimulate destination marketing organizations to differentiate their own destination products from those of competitors. Two main aspects are analyzed: the main characteristics of local events and the influence of local festival on destination image. Moreover, the economic impact of festivals on the community and the main tourism management strategies adopted by managers are investigated. Finally, theoretical and managerial implications deriving from the chapter are discussed.

In the service era, markets are reconceptualized as systems of actors interconnected through networked relationships based on resources exchange and producing value co-creation. Two of the main contemporary service research theories, Service-dominant logic and Service science, propose different organizational layouts for producing and harmonizing value co-creation: Service ecosystems and smart service systems. However, these two models show some limitations. So, this work aims at drawing an integrated model, the so called Smart service ecosystem that can be applied to hypercompetitive and experience-based sectors. The model was tested in the tourism sector by using a case study methodology. Ten interviews were administered to key informants to analyze their perception about the main dimensions of the smart service ecosystems. By adopting a holistic view, the results obtained can allow the elaboration of a framework which pinpoints: (1) the main stakeholder groups (actors); (2) the kind of resources exchanged (resource integration); (3) the tools employed (technology); (4) the institution exchange among users (institutions). Applying the model obtained to the tourism sector this work explores the main element-steps for managing and optimizing value co-creation and sustainability in the long run and thus for transitioning from innovation to social innovation.

Competing Value Framework (CVF) is a framework used to assess organizational culture in public administration and it is widely used in health services research to assess organizational culture as a predictor of quality improvement, employee and patient satisfaction, and team functioning. At present the CVF framework has never been tested in contexts where reforming action is vague and is characterized by changes and continuous reflections on the changes introduced. The present study try to fill this gap analysing how CVF works in a context characterized by continued uneven homogeneous reforms. The paper has theoretical and practical implication depicting also suggestions for politicians.

This paper proposes a re-conceptualization of the port supply chain as a smart service system, in accordance with the theory of service science. Starting from a short literature review about the port supply chain approach and service science, a new comprehensive framework is provided to better understand seaport dynamics and the creation of competitive port supply chains. The methodology used is the case study approach. The Authors examined the Port of Salerno (Italy) and re-conceptualized it as a smart port service system. The originality of the work lies in the application of service science as a lens to re-conceptualize the port supply chain, that allows the implementation of a logistic framework. Both theoretical and practical implications are provided to enrich the literature about port supply chains and to support port operators.

The goal of the current work is to introduce a model for the identification and measurement of consumers’ behavioral and cognitive value cocreation activities in the light of service-dominant logic (SDL) assumptions. The individuation of tools for the measurement of users’ conduct has a fundamental role in the modeling of service consumer needs and in guiding suppliers to improve relationships with their counterparts. A framework identifying eight dimensions of consumer value cocreation behavior is proposed and empirically validated through an exploratory factor analysis, which confirms the existence of six out of the eight dimensions initially postulated. To develop an instrument for measuring consumer value cocreation activities and behavior, we tested our scale in the education field. In particular, the 42-item scale was tested on a sample of 180 students attending their third (last) year of their business management degree. This paper produces two main outcomes: the theoretical outcome specifies and assesses the activities and dimensions of consumers’ value cocreation, while the managerial outcome allows managers to devise new methods of delivery and new practical measures to stimulate the involvement of users at each level.

Nowadays, public funded universities have to increase their traction in acquiring students and in gaining and retaining their commitment, satisfaction and loyalty. In the area of information management, the Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) technique has been widely applied to perform inter-construct causal analysis (i.e. Commitment, Quality of Services, Loyalty, etc.) on specific observed indicators in order to model and analyze student loyalty in educational institutions. Nevertheless, SEM does not support what-if analysis contrived to consider decision-making scenarios, such as: what happens to student loyalty if managers adopt a quality-based strategy, and so on. This work proposes to combine SEM results with a Fuzzy Cognitive Map (FCM) to support what-if analysis and to determine the best strategy to adopt for the case study of the Relationship Quality-Based Student Loyalty Model (RQSL). Specifically, the causal models retrieved from SEM will be exploited as the input map of concepts enabling FCM. Subsequently, FCM is performed considering different input configurations corresponding to specific managing strategies (e.g. investing in quality of service, or quality of teaching, etc.) activating/deactivating various input concepts in order to simulate implications on the output constructs (e.g., Loyalty, Commitment, etc.). The results of the experiments provide reasonably good estimates of the impact on student loyalty deriving from investing in each specific factor and provides a helpful analysis that will support decision making. Furthermore, this study highlights the opportunities deriving from the cross-fertilization between the management and computer science domains.

This article examines public-private partnership in light of the New Public Management and New Public Governance, showing the effect of the overlap and mix of elements generated by these paradigms. For purposes of the article, PPP is defined as a unit of analysis of a network, with particular reference to processes of coproduction and cocreation. The study explores these ideal types in the strategic planning of several Italian cities, differentiating PPPs on the basis of degree of participant involvement, a distinction based on such explanatory variables as the structure of the decision-making process, legitimacy, transparency, and accountability. Broadly speaking, the article seeks to understand how relationships among public and private partners affect partnership sustainability. The analysis highlights the prevalence of PPPs oriented toward coproduction.
