The adsorption of Eu(III) on composites synthesised from graphene oxide (GO), maghemite (MGH), and chitosan (CS) has been studied using different approaches. The physicochemical and morphological characteristics of the composites GO-MGH, GO-CS, GO-MGH-CS I, II, and III were determined by XRD, Mössbauer spectroscopy, FTIR, Raman spectroscopy, and TEM. According to the results of batch experiments, the maximum experimental adsorption capacity was 52, 54, 25, 103, and 102 mg/g for GO-MGH, GO-CS, GO-MGH-CS I, II, and III, respectively. The data obtained are in better agreement with the Langmuir, pseudo-second-order, and pseudo-first-order models only for GO-MGH. Thus, the adsorption of Eu(III) on the composites was a favourable, monolayer, and occurred at homogeneous sites. The nature of adsorption is chemical and, in the case of GO-MGH, physical. Tests of the composites in natural waters showed a high removal efficiency for Eu(III), Pu(IV), and Am(III), ranging from 74 to 100%. The ANFIS model has quite good predictive ability, as shown by the values for R2, MSE, SSE, and ARE. The GO-MGH-CS composites with the high adsorption capacity could be promising candidates for the removal of Eu(III) and the pre-concentration of Pu(IV) and Am(III) from natural waters.

In paleoecological studies, molecular markers are being used increasingly often to reconstruct community structures, environmental conditions and ecosystem changes. In this work, nodularin, anabaenopeptins and selected DNA sequences were applied as Nodularia spumigena markers to reconstruct the history of the cyanobacterium in the Norwegian fjords. For the purpose of this study, three sediment cores collected in Oslofjorden, Trondheimsfjorden and Balsfjorden were analyzed. The lack of nodularin in most recent sediments is consistent with the fact that only one report on the sporadic occurrence and low amounts of the cyanobacterium in Norwegian Fjords in 1976 has been published. However, analyses of species-specific chemical markers in deep sediments showed that thousands of years ago, N. spumigena constituted an important component of the phytoplankton community. The content of the markers in the cores indicated that the biomass of the cyanobacterium increased during the warmer Holocene periods. The analyses of genetic markers were less conclusive; they showed the occurrence of microcystin/nodularin producing cyanobacteria of Nostocales order, but they did not allow for the identification of the organisms at a species level.

Radiocarbon is one of the most significant radionuclides affecting the safety margins of near-surface repositories for the disposal of low- and intermediate-level, short-lived radioactive waste, arising from the operation and decommissioning of nuclear power plants (NPPs). One of the goals of the present study was to characterize radioactive waste from Ignalina NPP (Lithuania) (storage tanks TW18B01 and TW11B03) from the spent ion-exchange resins/perlite stream to determine the 14C-specific activity of inorganic and organic carbon compounds. The approach applied is based on classical radiochemical separation methods, including acid-stripping techniques and wet oxidation with subsequent catalytic combustion. The suitability of the method for 14C-specific activity determination in ion-exchange resin samples with a minimum detectable activity of 0.5 Bq/g by liquid scintillation counting (LSC) was demonstrated. The extraction efficiency of inorganic and organic carbon compounds based on model samples with known 14C activity was estimated. The fraction of 14C associated with organic compounds ranged from 42% to 63% for storage tank TW18B01 and from 30% to 63% for storage tank TW11B03. The specific activity of inorganic 14C was estimated as 12.6 Bq/g with a relative standard deviation (RSD) of 29% for storage tank TW18B01, and 177.5 Bq/g with a RSD of 35% for storage tank TW11B03. Based on volume and density data, the total 14C activity for radioactive waste stored in tanks TW18B01 and TW11B03 was estimated as 3.59E + 10 Bq (±32%) and 4.15E + 11 Bq (±28%), respectively.

Biopolymers such as chitosan are considered important candidates for water purification due to their non-toxicity, biodegradability, natural origin, biocompatibility, and potential for modification to provide additional capabilities, such as incorporating nanomaterials for magnetism to enable rapid separation or adding functional groups to enhance selectivity towards target adsorbates. This study investigated adsorption of Co (II), traced by Co-60 radionuclide, systematically evaluated in natural aquatic matrices selected according to water body type: seawater (Baltic Sea) and freshwater systems further distinguished as lentic (Lake Balsys) and lotic (Neris River) environments, using synthesized magnetite–chitosan nanocomposites (MCNs) with varying loadings of Fe3O4 (10–30 wt. %) nanoparticles providing different levels of magnetization. Comprehensive characterization (TEM, FTIR, AFM, XRD, and Mössbauer spectroscopy) confirmed successful integration of magnetite nanoparticles within the chitosan matrix and reproducible structural properties. An optimal magnetization of 11 emu/g was achieved at 20 wt. % Fe3O4, enabling rapid magnetic separation within <1 min without compromising sorption capacity. Adsorption isotherm models were applied to investigate the adsorption parameters, and sorption kinetics were studied, yielding a maximum adsorption capacity of 14.93 mg/g for MCN-10 in seawater and 11.95 mg/g for MCN-20 in freshwater with observed equilibrium within 120 min. These promising results indicate that the MCN is a suitable nanocomposite for the removal of Co (II) ions and the Co-60 radionuclide from aquatic media.
