Rural area sustainable development represents one of the main aspects of prosperity, enabling countries to strengthen their economy, improve living conditions, and create new opportunities for growth. Different criteria from the areas of economic sustainability, infrastructure and access to services, community participation and resource management, geographical location, and social sustainability were determined, and three appropriate multi-criteria decision-making methods were applied; the most significant sub-criteria for rural area development were diversification of the economy, connection with urban areas, and innovations in agriculture and tourism. Also, rankings of sub-criteria were performed, and the similarity of the rankings was checked, making the fuzzy AHP algorithms suitable for estimating the influence of factors on rural areas development. Based on the results obtained, some strategies of underdeveloped area economic growth and sustainable development were presented.
Brain drain is one of the most significant challenges for the demographic and economic development of the Republic of Serbia. The migration of highly educated personnel to developed countries affects the reduction of the working-age population, reduced productivity and innovation capacity of the domestic economy. This process leads to a decrease in the competitiveness of the national economy and hinders sustainable economic growth. At the same time, the outflow of highly educated personnel results in the loss of significant investments in the education system, placing an additional burden on domestic institutions and the labor market. The paper explores the patterns, scope and consequences of brain drain, with a special focus on economic and demographic implications. In particular, factors such as low incomes, limited opportunities for professional development, unstable business environment and socio-economic conditions that encourage the migration of highly educated individuals are analyzed. Using a combination of descriptive and empirical analysis, the paper provides insight into current trends and possible strategies for mitigating the negative consequences of this phenomenon. The research results indicate the need to create both policies that would stimulate the (re)maintenance of talented personnel in the country, and strategies for their professional engagement through return or cooperation with domestic institutions and businesses.
