Élcio de Souza Leal's work focuses on the molecular aspects of viral evolution. He has used next-generation sequencing to identify and characterize new animal viruses. He also uses phylogenetic approaches to study the effect of genetic variation on the adaptive fitness of RNA viruses. He is particularly interested in understanding the contribution of recombination to the diversity and host range of RNA viruses.
