Due to the limitations of symmetric-key techniques, authentication and key agreement (AKA) protocols based on public-key techniques have attracted much attention, providing secure access and communication mechanism for various application environments. Among these public-key techniques used for AKA protocols, chaotic-map is more effective than scalar multiplication and modular exponentiation, and it offers a list of desirable cryptographic properties such as un-predictability and higher efficiency than scalar multiplication and modular exponentiation. Furthermore, it is believed that three-factor AKA protocols can achieve higher security level than single- and two-factor protocols. However, none of existing three-factor AKA protocols can meet all security requirements. One of the most prevalent problems is how to balance security and usability. To deal with this problem, we put forward a provably secure three-factor AKA protocol based on extended chaotic-maps for mobile lightweight devices, by adopting the techniques of "Fuzzy-Verifiers" and "Honeywords". We prove the security of our protocol in the random oracle model. We also simulate the protocol by using the AVISPA tool. The security analysis and simulation results show that our protocol can meet all 13 evaluation criteria regarding security. The evaluation results demonstrate that our protocol offers better balance between security and usability over state-of-the-art ones.

The telecare medical information systems (TMIS) provide the convenience to the patients/users to be served at home. Along with such ease, it is essential to preserve the privacy and to provide the security to the patients/users in TMIS. Often, authentication protocols are adopted to guarantee privacy and secure interaction between the patients/users and remote server. Recently, Chaudhry et al. pointed out that Islam et al.’s scheme based on smart card is prone to user impersonation and server impersonation attacks. Chaudhry et al. later presented a enhanced scheme based on Elliptic curve cryptography (ECC) to remedy the weaknesses of Islam et al.’s scheme. Unfortunately, we find some important limitations in both schemes. We remark that their scheme is prone to off-line password guessing attack, user/server impersonation attack and man-in-middle attack. To overcome these limitations, we present an improved authentication scheme keeping apart the threats encountered in the design of Chaudhry et al.’s scheme. Moreover, the presented scheme can also resist all known attacks. We prove the security of the proposed scheme with the help of widespread Burrows-Abadi-Needham Logic (BAN-Logic). A brief comparison with the previous works provides that the presented protocol is more efficient and more secure than other related schemes.

To provide secure communication, the authentication-and-key-agreement scheme plays a vital role in multi-server environments, Internet of Things (IoT), wireless sensor networks (WSNs), etc. This scheme enables users and servers to negotiate for a common session initiation key. Our proposal first analyzes Amin et al.’s authentication scheme based on RSA and proves that it cannot provide perfect forward secrecy and user un-traceability, and is susceptible to offline password guessing attack and key-compromise user impersonation attack. Secondly, we provide that Srinivas et al.’s multi-server authentication scheme is not secured against offline password guessing attack and key-compromise user impersonation attack, and is unable to ensure user un-traceability. To remedy such limitations and improve computational efficiency, we present a multi-server two-factor authentication scheme using elliptic curve cryptography (ECC). Subsequently, employing heuristic analysis and Burrows–Abadi–Needham logic (BAN-Logic) proof, it is proven that the presented scheme provides security against all known attacks, and in particular provides user un-traceability and perfect forward security. Finally, appropriate comparisons with prevalent works demonstrate the robustness and feasibility of the presented solution in multi-server environments.

The Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) is an extensive and esteemed communication protocol employed to regulate signaling as well as for controlling multimedia communication sessions. Recently, Kumari et al. proposed an improved smart card based authentication scheme for SIP based on Farash’s scheme. Farash claimed that his protocol is resistant against various known attacks. But, we observe some accountable flaws in Farash’s protocol. We point out that Farash’s protocol is prone to key-compromise impersonation attack and is unable to provide pre-verification in the smart card, efficient password change and perfect forward secrecy. To overcome these limitations, in this paper we present an enhanced authentication mechanism based on Kumari et al.’s scheme. We prove that the proposed protocol not only overcomes the issues in Farash’s scheme, but it can also resist against all known attacks. We also provide the security analysis of the proposed scheme with the help of widespread AVISPA (Automated Validation of Internet Security Protocols and Applications) software. At last, comparing with the earlier proposals in terms of security and efficiency, we conclude that the proposed protocol is efficient and more secure.
