The use of information communication technologies (ICT) in education brings up new possibilities of promoting learning and health experiences. In this sense, education contexts of the 21st century must consider these two areas of knowledge, especially their integration. This article presents learning practices developed with mobile devices and games in order to improve learning and well-being in children and adolescents undergoing cancer treatment in a non-formal educational setting. The methodology is based on qualitative case studies with content-based data analyses, involving informal interviews and observation methods. The study considers data from five patients who participated in the research between 2015 and 2019. The results demonstrate a positive influence of the practices with mobile technologies and games in terms of learning and in the well-being experience of patients during the treatment.

The localization of an acoustic source has attracted much attention in the scientific community, having been applied in several different real-life applications. At the same time, the use of neural networks in the acoustic source localization problem is not common; hence, this work aims to show their potential use for this field of application. As such, the present work proposes a deep feed-forward neural network for solving the acoustic source localization problem based on energy measurements. Several network typologies are trained with ideal noise-free conditions, which simplifies the usual heavy training process where a low mean squared error is obtained. The networks are implemented, simulated, and compared with conventional algorithms, namely, deterministic and metaheuristic methods, and our results indicate improved performance when noise is added to the measurements. Therefore, the current developed scheme opens up a new horizon for energy-based acoustic localization, a field where machine learning algorithms have not been applied in the past.

The present work addresses the development of a test-bench for the embedded implementation, validity, and testing of the recently proposed Improved Elephant Herding Optimization (iEHO) algorithm, applied to the acoustic localization problem. The implemented methodology aims to corroborate the feasibility of applying iEHO in real-time applications on low complexity and low power devices, where three different electronic modules are used and tested. Swarm-based metaheuristic methods are usually examined by employing high-level languages on centralized computers, demonstrating their capability in finding global or good local solutions. This work considers iEHO implementation in C-language running on an embedded processor. Several random scenarios are generated, uploaded, and processed by the embedded processor to demonstrate the algorithm’s effectiveness and the test-bench usability, low complexity, and high reliability. On the one hand, the results obtained in our test-bench are concordant with the high-level implementations using MatLab® in terms of accuracy. On the other hand, concerning the processing time and as a breakthrough, the results obtained over the test-bench allow to demonstrate a high suitability of the embedded iEHO implementation for real-time applications due to its low latency.

The present work proposes a new approach to address the energy-based acoustic localization problem. The proposed approach represents an improved version of evolutionary optimization based on Elephant Herding Optimization (EHO), where two major contributions are introduced. Firstly, instead of random initialization of elephant population, we exploit particularities of the problem at hand to develop an intelligent initialization scheme. More precisely, distance estimates obtained at each reference point are used to determine the regions in which a source is most likely to be located. Secondly, rather than letting elephants to simply wander around in their search for an update of the source location, we base their motion on a local search scheme which is found on a discrete gradient method. Such a methodology significantly accelerates the convergence of the proposed algorithm, and comes at a very low computational cost, since discretization allows us to avoid the actual gradient computations. Our simulation results show that, in terms of localization accuracy, the proposed approach significantly outperforms the standard EHO one for low noise settings and matches the performance of an existing enhanced version of EHO (EEHO). Nonetheless, the proposed scheme achieves this accuracy with significantly less number of function evaluations, which translates to greatly accelerated convergence in comparison with EHO and EEHO. Finally, it is also worth mentioning that the proposed methodology can be extended to any population-based metaheuristic method (it is not only restricted to EHO), which tackles the localization problem indirectly through distance measurements.

Bee venom is a sub-product of the beekeeping activity, and has a wide field of applications in several pivotal markets. Nevertheless, its collection is not an activity disseminated among Portuguese beekeepers, as its production is marginal. There are limited empirical studies on the production and the technical aspects involved in this type of activity. Our study, therefore, contributes to narrowing this knowledge gap, by analyzing and comparing the productivity and profitability of two bee venom collection techniques. The first involves equipment available on the market, and the second involves a new device developed from the aim of the present work. Concerning market knowledge, a questionnaire was given to a sample of beekeepers, to understand and characterize the market’s needs and the level of information about bee venom. Because of the growing market interest in this product, a new collector is proposed, based on a set of intensive frame collectors strategically placed inside the beehives. The improvements obtained were increased production, either in terms of quantity or quality, obtaining a positive profitability. To evaluate the productivity of the proposed equipment, a comparison was performed, in an apiary, between existing state-of-the-art equipment and the proposed intensive collector. In a second stage, the profitability of the new proposed equipment was analyzed, using a comparative method between incomes and costs associated with both solutions. The results obtained showed that the new intensive collector enables a profitable collection of bee venom in Portugal, despite its higher initial investment.

This work presents a field implementation of acoustic energy-based positioning, using Elephant Herding Optimization algorithm to solve the NP-hard optimization problem. Measurements are used to validate and adjust the decay acoustic model, and simulations are performed with an outdoor environment setup, where the implementation is fulfilled and compared with real acoustic measurements. The performance in both scenarios is studied, in terms of accuracy, with the variation of the number of sensors nodes used in the model. The field implementation shows that results are aligned with simulation ones, validating the acoustic model and the use of metaheuristic methods such as Elephant Herding Optimization for solving the localization problem.

This work addresses the energy-based source localization problem in wireless sensors networks. Instead of circumventing the maximum likelihood (ML) problem by applying convex relaxations and approximations, we approach it directly by the use of metaheuristics. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time that metaheuristics are applied to this type of problem. More specifically, an elephant herding optimization (EHO) algorithm is applied. Through extensive simulations, the key parameters of the EHO algorithm are optimized such that they match the energy decay model between two sensor nodes. A detailed analysis of the computational complexity is presented, as well as a performance comparison between the proposed algorithm and existing non-metaheuristic ones. Simulation results show that the new approach significantly outperforms existing solutions in noisy environments, encouraging further improvement and testing of metaheuristic methods.

The aim of the present study is to analyse the energy potential of biomass generated in the Autonomous Community of Extremadura—Spain. It is centred mainly in an experimental study of the processes of gasification for certain elements such as rice hull, nut shell, and pine and eucalyptus woods. In order to evaluate the results obtained in the gasification process we proceeded to their characterization by means of proximate analysis, ultimate analysis and Higher Heating Value (HHV) evaluation. The evaluation process consists in several experimental procedures comprising biomass gasification processes for each group, via an air flow of 200 ml/min at 800 °C. The yields for each phase obtained in such processes were calculated for the four residuals, centring our study in the solid and gaseous phases. Yields ranging between 9 and 16% for the solid phase, 5 and 13% for the liquid phase or 73 and 85% for the gaseous phase were obtained, depending on the residual used. The gas production was comprised between 1.6 and 1.9 m3 kg−1, measured under standard conditions (std). For the gaseous phase both quantification and characterisation experiments were carried out by means of gas chromatography, in order to obtain data corresponding to the energy potential of the residuals. The obtained results point toward a thermal power between 3 and 4.5 MW depending on the nature of the residual.
