Elzinandes Leal de Azeredo has devoted more than 20 years to studying arboviruses of medical importance, especially Flaviviruses such as dengue and yellow fever. She has been a researcher for the last 12 years, initially focusing on dengue infection and recently expanding into research on HIV, HCV, chikungunya, and zika diseases. Her research has included evaluating mechanisms of immune response in infections with the natural human arboviruses dengue, zika, and chikungunya; identifying biomarkers and correlates of protective immunity in humans; and studying human viral coinfections and the influence of HIV coinfection on dengue, zika, and chikungunya immunity. Her main lines of research are studying the mechanisms of the antiviral and inflammatory immune response in patients who are naturally infected by arboviruses alone or coinfected with HIV, in vitro models of infection by these arboviruses, and the antiviral and immunomodulatory effects of extracts from medicinal plants.
