Ecotourism involves visiting natural areas to carry out environmentally friendly activities, contributing to environmental care. The present study aims to: (i) establish the dimensions of the perceived value in ecotourism applied to a natural park, (ii) analyze the dimensions of perceived value that predict ecotourism satisfaction, and (iii) identify the dimensions of perceived value that predict ecotourists’ intentions to return, recommend, and provide positive word of mouth about the ecotourism destination as loyalty variables. The research was conducted in the Posets-Maladeta Natural Park in Spain. The sample taken in situ consisted of 341 questionnaires. For data analysis, factor analysis and the stepwise multiple regression method were used. The results showed three dimensions of perceived value: economic, functional, and social and emotional. The “functional” value was the most significant predictor of ecotourists’ satisfaction, intentions to return, and to provide positive word of mouth. Likewise, the “functional” and the “social and emotional” dimensions were important predictors of tourists’ intentions to recommend these places. These findings will serve as management guides for different institutions and tourism service providers of protected areas to develop products according to tourists’ perceived value.

Coastal and marine destinations that offer recreational activities can enhance visitors’ experiences and promote their environmental responsibility. The objective of this study was to carry out a market segmentation of the domestic tourism demand based on recreational experiences in a coastal and marine destination. This in-situ research was conducted in Acapulco, an important destination in Mexico. A total of 441 questionnaires were obtained and analyzed. Factorial analysis was applied as a data reduction technique and K-means clustering as a case grouping method. Four dimensions of recreation experiences emerged: experiential reflection, experiential learning, ecological observation, and sensory and experiential. Also, four segments of tourists were found based on their recreation experiences: ‘multiple-experience recreationists,’ ‘hedonists,’ ‘knowledge seekers,’ and ‘aestheticists.’ The findings will serve as management guides for tourist destinations managers and will help companies in the sector to create efficient marketing plans.

Many tourists look for coastal and marine destinations where they can perform various natural and cultural activities. This study addresses the dimensions of push and pull motivations that influence a coastal and marine destination for domestic tourism, and an analysis was performed with the dimensions of push and pull motivations that predict satisfaction, return and destination recommendation. For this purpose, a quantitative study of 441 surveys, where the researchers used data reduction and multiple regression techniques to select the motivational variables that predict a future behavioral variable, was carried out in Acapulco, a relevant coastal and marine destination in Mexico. Findings revealed two motivating dimensions of thrust that were “novelty” and “escape” and two dimensions of attraction that were “static marine” and “active marine,” The "novelty" and "static marine" factors mainly influenced satisfaction, while the factors that mostly predict return and recommendation were "escape" and "novelty.”

Typical gastronomy is an essential component in the diversification of destinations and a way to understand the behavior of the modern tourist. The aims of this study are (i) to conduct an assessment of service attributes in typical food restaurants, (ii) to identify the service attributes that overall influence satisfaction in typical food restaurants, (iii) to establish the service attributes that influence and predict overall satisfaction in typical food restaurants. The investigation is located in the Guayas province, on the coast of Ecuador. Statistical tools such as Spearman's correlation coefficient and the step-by-step multiple regression method were used to analyze the data. The Results show that the food's taste and quality were most valued by visitors, who expressed a high level of satisfaction with typical food. Likewise, the attributes that influenced the visitors' general satisfaction were the prices and the taste and quality of the food. Meanwhile, the taste and quality of food and prices were the attributes that predicted satisfaction in typical food restaurants. These results demonstrate the importance of the flavor and quality attributes of food in this typology of restaurants. The theoretical and practical implications concerning tourist satisfaction in typical gastronomy are analyzed. It will also serve as valuable information to create management guides and to improve the quality of service.

Ecotourism is one of the tourism variants with more annual growth. Motivation has become a fundamental criterion for travel behavior. Segmentation is used to identify the market niches of different tourism products and services. This study collects these three elements and is designed to examine demand segmentation and motivations in ecotourism. The analysis was carried out in the Albufera and Serranía de Cuenca Natural Parks, both located in the Mediterranean area in Spain. The analysis sample consists in 349 surveys obtained in situ. For the data analysis, a factor analysis and nonhierarchical K-media segmentation were performed. The results show eight motivational dimensions: “Interpersonal relationships”, “Self-development”, “Escape”, “Building personal relationships”, “Nature”, “Ego-defensive function”, “Rewards”, and “Fun”. According to tourists’ motivations, three ecotourist segments are obtained: “Nature”, “Multiple motives”, and “Reward and Escape”. This research can assist companies and institutions to improve tourism service offers and perform efficient marketing planning.

Purpose The objectives of this study were to (a) analyze the relationship between sociodemographic aspects and motivations in ecotourism and (b) identify the relationship between sociodemographic aspects and satisfaction and loyalty variables. Design/methodology/approach The research was carried out in the Arenal National Park and the Caño Negro National Wildlife Refuge in Costa Rica, an ecologically important ecotourism destination. The sample consisted of 310 surveys obtained in situ. For data analysis, factor analysis and the multiple regression method were used. Findings The results show that younger tourists tend to be more motivated by self-development, whereas older tourists and lower-income tourists are more motivated toward strengthening interpersonal relationships with family and friends. In contrast, tourists with lower education levels are highly motivated by novelty, feel more satisfied with the visit and are more willing to recommend and say positive things about the destination. Besides, repeat visitors are most likely to return. Research limitations/implications The present study was limited by the timing in which it was carried out. Among the future lines of research, studies that address the relationship between sociodemographic variables in the different ecotourism segments should be conducted. Practical implications Regarding the practical implications, this study helps companies related to tourism to pay attention to the sociodemographic characteristics of tourists to design activities and services according to their motivations, satisfaction and loyalty. For younger tourists who are motivated by self-development, activities and services related to learning about nature can be planned to encourage their personal growth, new abilities and individual skills. Regarding elderly and lower-income tourists, who are motivated to be with family and friends, recreational activities to improve family and friendship relationships can be promoted. Social implications These findings will serve to plan attractions and services in protected areas, benefiting the destinations and the communities sustainably. Originality/value One of the contributions of this study is to find a negative relationship between the level of education and other variables such as satisfaction, intentions to recommend and intentions to say positive things about the destination. This research also identified a negative relationship between age and the self-development motivational dimension, a positive relationship between age and being with family and friends dimension, a negative relationship between income and being with family and friends dimension and a negative relationship between the number of visits and the novelty dimension.

The objectives of the present study are: i) to identify the segments of tourism demand, based on gastronomic motivations in coastal destinations, and ii) to find the relationship between demand segments and satisfaction and service variables. The investigation was carried out in General Villamil Playas city, a renowned coastal destination in Ecuador. Factor analysis and the K-means clustering method were used to analyze the data. The findings show three segments: “Enjoyers,” highly motivated to eat typical seafood dishes on the beach. “Survivors,” with low motivations for all variables, and who consider local gastronomy only a means to satisfy a physiological need. The third “Experimenters,” have high motivations for all motivational variables and believe that gastronomy, in general, is very important.

National parks with marine reserves have great potential for coastal and marine tourism. In this regard, the Galapagos archipelago is an important coastal and marine destination in Ecuador declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. The objective of this empirical study was to analyze demand segmentation considering tourists’ motivations in this destination. The research was carried out in situ, and multivariate statistical techniques were used to analyze the 407 questionnaires collected. The results show six motivational factors: learning, heritage and nature, sun and beach, sports, authentic coastal experience, novelty, and social interaction. Two different segments of visitors have also been found. The first group, called ‘Multiple Motives,’ is formed by tourists with high motivation in all the motivational variables that include sun and beach. The second group, called ‘Eco-coastal,’ is made up of tourists who have a great motivation to experience marine life and national parks, discovering new things they are not used to, and for knowing their flora and fauna. From these findings, useful recommendations emerge for service providers and institutions related to the tourist offer in this kind of coastal and marine destinations.

Conducting studies on the image of a country and the preferences of tourists contribute to developing plans and programs for the benefit of a tourist destination. The current research constitutes an analysis of Ecuador’s image and the preferences of the Chinese youth market regarding this country. This empirical study used a questionnaire as data collection method, and the findings were analyzed with univariate and bivariate statistics. The results show that young Chinese tourists prefer to travel with friends and that their most valued motivations to visit Ecuador are related to knowing the nature, tasting the cuisine of the country, knowing new places, different cultures, and lifestyles, and enjoying the sun and the beach. Also, the types of tourism that Chinese citizens would like to do in Ecuador are nature tourism, sun and beach tourism, and urban tourism.

Coastal and marine destinations offer a variety of activities for their visitors. The objective of this empirical study was, considering the above assertation, analyzing the segmentation of the demand for this kind of destination in terms of customer motivations. This project was an on-site investigation conducted in the city of Salinas, an important coastal and marine destination in Ecuador. The researchers used 385 questionnaires and analyzed them with multivariate statistical techniques. The results show six motivational factors: “Authentic coastal experience,” “Heritage and nature,” “Learning,” “Novelty and social interaction,” “Physical activities” and “Sun and beach.” The study also shows the existence of two different segments of visitors. The first group labeled “Beach lovers” formed by tourists who have high motivation in such aspects related to the sun and the beach, this group refers to the motivational dimension “sun and beach.” The second group, labeled “Multiple coastal motives,” grouped tourists who have high values in all the motivational dimensions. The findings of this research suggest the need for a more refined and complete brand that could attract not only beach lovers but also other segments of tourists motivated by the different activities and features that this coastal and marine destination can offer.

In recent years, there has been growing tourist interest in the environment and enjoyment of the natural environment, prompting ecotourism to grow more rapidly than conventional tourism. This study analyses the motivations for, and segmentation of, the demand for ecotourism based on functional theory. Fieldwork was conducted in Machalilla National Park in Ecuador, a protected coastal area where one of the main attractions is the opportunity to see humpback whales. The study sample consists of 386 questionnaire responses, obtained in situ for convenience. The data were analysed using factor analysis and non-hierarchical segmentation. The results show that there are several dimensions to the motivation for ecotourism: ‘self-development’, ‘interpersonal relationships and ego-defensive function’, ‘building personal relationships’, ‘escape’, ‘nature appreciation’ and ‘reward’. Ecotourists were also segmented based on their motivations; three segments were uncovered: ‘nature’, ‘reward and escape’ and ‘multiple motives’. This study should enable public institutions and private companies to improve their tourist offerings, benefit the destination and develop a more effective marketing strategy.

Coastal marine tourism offers new alternatives for tourist recreation in coastal destinations having natural and cultural attractions. The objective of this study is to create a demand segmentation of a costal marine destination in terms of tourists’ motivations as related to their sociodemographic parameters and trip characteristics. The empirical work was carried out in situ in the city of Manta, Ecuador, by administering a questionnaire to 390 visitors to the city and conducting multivariate statistical techniques on the data collected. The results show that there are three motivational dimensions which might be termed: ecotourism / gastronomy, sun / beach / entertainment, and relaxation and which determine three tourist clusters. Firstly, the ‘beach lovers’ tourists, who have high motivations for resting, and enjoying the sun, beach and entertainment activities. Secondly, the ‘eco-coastal’ tourists who, besides their high motivations for resting, sun, and the beach, also enjoy the typical cuisine, and the attractions offered by the city. The ‘multiple motives’ tourists, have high motivations for all the available attractions. Regarding the sociodemographic variables and the trip characteristics, the findings suggest that the older the tourist, the higher their level of motivation and the greater their motivations for sun, beach and gastronomy; students have also high motivations for the sun and the beach. The greater the frequency of visits, the higher the level of motivation and the satisfaction of these tourists, and the greater the motivation for coastal tourism and gastronomy. These results offer a basis for tourism providers to develop products and services customized to demand.
