This study provides an XGBoost model to characterize the environmental orientation of innovative firms. This novel approach, using state-of-the-art machine learning methodologies and multiple recognized drivers of eco-innovation, provides solid empirical support for the understanding of the mechanisms that are crucial for firms' transition to a low-carbon economy. Although many drivers have been considered to affect firms’ eco-innovation, our feature selection process using the BorutaShap algorithm demonstrates that few aspects are truly relevant. Furthermore, analyzing a tree surrogate of the final model, our study explores the different paths or combinations of aspects that consistently lead to a specific eco-innovation orientation. The accuracy of the model and the large and complete spectrum of innovative companies in the sample contribute to the generalizability of the results. This study is particularly relevant because the main drivers of firms’ eco-innovative orientation depend on their innovative behavior, indicating that the managerial and policy work has to be directed to raising awareness of the different externalities derived from innovation. On one side, policy regulations should continue to pressure firms with environmental standards. On the other side, managers can stimulate the creation of a corporate innovative culture oriented toward improving operational efficiency (reducing unnecessary costs), improving the workplace environment, and focusing on new customer demands, which, in essence, will guide the organization to be more environmentally and socially responsible.

Many university students have difficulties when facing statistics related tasks, leading to an increase in their levels of anxiety and poor performance. Researchers have identified negative attitudes towards statistics, which have been shaped through students’ secondary education experience, as a major driver for their failure. In this study we want to uncover the causal recipes of attitudes leading to high and low levels of anxiety in secondary education students, and the role that the learning approach plays in these relationships. We used fuzzy sets comparative qualitative analysis (fsQCA) in a sample of 325 students surveyed on the multifactorial scale of attitudes toward statistics (MSATS) and the revised two factor study process questionnaire (R-SPQ-2F). The results indicate that, respectively, a high or a low level of self-confidence is the most important and a sufficient condition by itself for achieving a low or a high level of anxiety, while the learning approaches and other attitudes are only present in other causal combinations that represent a small number of cases.

Literature about sustainability and sustainable businesses has become a large field of study during the last years. This field is growing so fast that there are sub-areas or bodies of literature within the sustainability which scopes with clear boundaries between each other. This has caused the apparition of several methodologies and tools for turning traditional companies into sustainable business models. This paper aims to develop the descriptive stage of the theory building process through a careful review of literature to create the first phase of a theory about corporate sustainability. It provides the following classification of concepts retrieved from the observation of the state of art: holistic sustainability, sustainable business models, sustainable methodologies, sustainable operations, and sustainability-oriented innovation. In addition, it seeks to establish relationships between the sustainable concepts and the expected outcomes that their implementation can generate among companies and organizations. Finally, it gives an overview of possibilities for managers that want to embed sustainability in their firms and clear paths of research for keeping the building of the theory about corporate sustainability as a process of constant iteration and improvement.

Absorptive capacity creates valuable competitive advantages. However, the tourism sector lacks an empirical analysis of how absorptive capacity is generated and how different organisational capabilities impact on its creation. The objective of this study is to identify which are the organisational capacities that generate absorptive capacity in this sector. To do so, we develop an empirical study using the partial least square (PLS) based on 86 Ecuadorian companies, which represents a new and potent tourism destination. Our results reveal that existing knowledge consolidation, the centralisation of decision-making, knowledge formalisation, connectedness, and knowledge-management infrastructures directly and positively influence the absorptive capacity. Direct managerial implications arise, which highlight what mechanisms help create and foster absorptive capacity within companies at the touristic industry.

Scientific and business environment literature shows that green, sustainable innovation or eco-innovation has proven to be a source of competitive advantage today. The industrial clusters, their dynamism, and the synergies created within them attract a lot of attention from the scientific community. However, to date, the joint study of these two concepts and, more specifically, the factors that drive eco-innovation specifically in a cluster, have not been studied in depth. This article models eco-innovation in industrial clusters, thus addressing this gap and proposing a model based on information gathered from the literature and a detailed analysis of behavior in relation to eco-innovation in different sectors. Results suggest that including eco-innovation variables and measures may have positive implications such as improvements at the strategic level and the reduction of costs and use of resources. An eco-innovation model for clusters is proposed. It considers eight key factors that seek to raise its competitive level by promoting eco-innovation within clusters. The model includes five internal factors that analyze business capabilities and three external factors that study the effect of launching eco-innovative activities. This model could help the companies’ managers and those responsible for clusters in creating more successful strategies to increase competitiveness by enhancing eco-innovation. It could also serve as a guide for government entities in the performance of eco-innovative activities in economic sectors.

Fisheries and aquaculture are incorporating environmental management system (EMS) tools and certified sustainable products as part of their strategic priorities. Firms have different ways to certify their environmental actions: the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) 14001 and the blue Marine Stewardship Council (MSC). ISO 14001 certifies the adoption of EMSs; and the MSC label guarantees the use of seafood that can be traced back to a sustainable resource. The economic impact and the differences between eco-labeling certifications are topics of great interest for environmental management. This paper analyzes and compares the effect of ISO14001 and the MSC on the results of the Spanish fishing auxiliary industry. We analyzed data from 561 Spanish firms and deployed a multivariate quantitative analysis with data retrieved from the financial accounts of Spanish fish processing and preserving firms, in different economic and financial ratios. Results show that certified firms get better economic ratios, although these benefits are not due to an operational efficiency improvement. Firm size is found to have a moderating effect on the relation between certification and economic performance. Environmental certification on firms’ performance provides key information for environmental management-related decision making.

In this paper we investigate to which point each of the healthcare industry’s stakeholders are influencing the final innovation outputs. We propose and test a model that puts together stakeholders' engagement, innovation objectives and innovation outputs. We analyze data from 400+ healthcare Spanish companies using Partial Least Squared modelling technique. Results show that stakeholders’ engagement is crucial to orientate innovation objectives that are directly and positively related to innovation outputs. Also, results push to a higher implication of society in the co-creation and participation in innovation activities in the healthcare industry highlighting its importance as, both, triggers and the most benefited recipients. This paper uncovers the relationship among healthcare stakeholders and innovation outputs and also answers another research question—which stakeholders have a stronger relationship with innovation outputs. Implications suggest that healthcare industry managers and policy makers should build on the relationship with clients/customers/patients/final users as innovation-related information inputs as an effective way to improve their innovation outputs.

Students report a high degree of anxiety and reduced self-confidence when facing statistical subjects, especially in secondary education. This anxiety turns into poor academic performance. Most studies have used linear models for studying the interrelation between different attitudes and proving their impact on performance or related variables. This study uses a different approach to explain and better understand the causal patterns of factors stimulating lower levels of anxiety in students when facing statistics in secondary education. We employed the Multi-factorial Scale of Attitudes Toward Statistics (MSATS) and fuzzy-set qualitative comparative analysis (fsQCA) on a sample of 95 secondary school students in Spain. We identified the recipes or causal combination of factors, leading to low and high levels of anxiety. The results indicate that self-confidence and motivation are important factors in these recipes, but there is no single necessary condition that ensures lower levels of anxiety.

In recent years, there has been growing tourist interest in the environment and enjoyment of the natural environment, prompting ecotourism to grow more rapidly than conventional tourism. This study analyses the motivations for, and segmentation of, the demand for ecotourism based on functional theory. Fieldwork was conducted in Machalilla National Park in Ecuador, a protected coastal area where one of the main attractions is the opportunity to see humpback whales. The study sample consists of 386 questionnaire responses, obtained in situ for convenience. The data were analysed using factor analysis and non-hierarchical segmentation. The results show that there are several dimensions to the motivation for ecotourism: ‘self-development’, ‘interpersonal relationships and ego-defensive function’, ‘building personal relationships’, ‘escape’, ‘nature appreciation’ and ‘reward’. Ecotourists were also segmented based on their motivations; three segments were uncovered: ‘nature’, ‘reward and escape’ and ‘multiple motives’. This study should enable public institutions and private companies to improve their tourist offerings, benefit the destination and develop a more effective marketing strategy.

Among tourists, there is recently a growing interest in the environment and enjoying the natural world. This study analyzed the motivations and segmentation of the demand for ecotourism, using functional theory as a reference point. Empirical analysis was carried out in Santay National Recreation Area, Morro Mangrove Wildlife Refuge, and Samanes National Recreation Area. The sample included 382 surveys, obtained in situ using the simple random sampling method. Factorial analysis and non-hierarchical segmentation were performed to analyze the data. The results indicate that there are several motivational dimensions in ecotourism, including self-development, interpersonal relationships and ego-defensive function, building personal relationships, escape reward, and nature appreciation. We also identified three different segments of ecotourists based on their motivations—nature, multiple motives, and reward and escape—as well as the characteristics of the different segments. The present investigation will help public institutions and private companies improve their tourism offerings and develop more efficient marketing plans.

The environment is increasingly gaining importance for citizens and society and, therefore, for consumers. Eco‐innovation is a direct path for reducing the impact of production while providing companies with a source of competitive advantage. The automotive industry and its supply chain have a great impact on the environment, but no research has been developed on how the orientation toward the environment is evolving for the automotive industry and how future performance may be affected by current decisions. The aim of this paper is to bridge this gap by analyzing the eco‐innovative dynamism of the automobile industry. To do this, we use a panel analysis to see the point at which past behavior influences future decisions. The partial least square method is used to analyze the eco‐innovative dynamism of the automobile industry. We analyze a data set based on 159 responses of Spanish companies that belong to the automobile sector. Results show that environmental orientation drivers do not evolve over a short period while in the longer term there is an evolution. We prove that carryover effects have a great impact on the future behavior of the firms, showing that the evolution of organizations' environmental behavior is a long‐range consideration. Managerial implications arise from this paper's conclusions, as the decision‐making process is clarified.

Recent studies in literature on eco-innovation have adopted a systematic approach, rather than taking advantage of what the iMetrics method — different types of information studies such as bibliometrics, scientometrics, and informetrics — can contribute to the understanding of how knowledge increases and develops in a particular field. This chapter contributes to filling this gap by completing what other studies have already revealed. Our contribution adds information about the evolution in research on eco-innovation and the distinct nature of the knowledge generated by most important countries in the field. In this chapter, through the examination of scientific papers indexed in the Web of Science and Scopus databases, an analysis of co-keywords was undertaken through the use of Social Network Analysis. These results indicated that: (a) eco-innovation was related to environment, management, and engineering; (b) evolution in the field moved toward a practitioner context, a factor which is shown in the changes of the most important keywords; and (c) mapping the science in this field is contextual, depicting the structural characteristics of different countries. These results may be of interest to researchers, practitioners, and policy makers. In particular, researchers can make interesting contacts and detect gaps for future research; practitioners can find institutions and researchers to work with; and policy makers can use the differences between knowledge patterns in the different countries for decision-making.

This study analyses the key factors in the environmental orientation of innovation processes at hotel companies. Using the model of structural equations and data retrieved from the Technological Innovation Spanish panel, we shed light on how the environmental orientation of companies is proactively affected by the typology of innovations and the existing relationship between the market drivers (customers, competitors, clients and suppliers) and companies’ environmental orientation. Based on the results, a validated partial least squares (PLS) graphical model is presented, which clarifies and quantifies established relationships among the different variables. Research gaps and future lines are also highlighted.

Social innovation, defined as a new and useful solution to a problem or a social need that the created value or benefits that are mainly addressed to society, instead that to a particular business or group of people, is arising as one of the most powerful tools to drive change. Its ability to engage with the needs of society is one of its key characteristics. On the other hand, environmental concern has to be considered nowadays in every aspect of the development on new products or services, as it has been proved to be a differentiating aspect and, therefore, to generate competitive advantages as well as a society’s demand to achieve a sustainable growing. Considering these, our objective is to analyze, study and shape the process of identifying needs, generating ideas and innovation assessment that integrates social, business and sustainability goals that society demands. We studied the ecotourism sector in a country that is a first level objective regarding International Cooperation, The Dominican Republic. To do so, we follow an innovative methodology, the living-lab, that was first tested at the MIT, consisting in a research methodology for detecting and testing needs in real life environments, therefore, focusing on the reality and with a high degree of user involvement as they are included in the value creation process. As a result, we explain the implementation of the research project, difficulties, observed benefits and main findings.

The purpose of this paper is to analyze the digital information regarding Street art in Europe. The disaggregation of this information is a problem to analyze the European Street Art in the scientific, touristic and educational contexts. We use content analysis as a methodology to get the digital information on the European Street art. Then, we applied a descriptive analysis of the data. Findings show us that, from the general websites (295), the majority of them present basic information. On the other hand, in the scientific environment and from the papers databases, researchers publish their works on non-specialized journals, what generates a dispersion of the knowledge. However, in the last 2 years, Street art is a trend topic and the aggregation of the digital resources could enhance the development of new perspectives of this heritage as economic and scientific value in Europe. Otherwise, we are losing many cultural and educational opportunities of our muralist production in Europe.
