Seepage mutation of fractured rock mass is one of the main inducements of dump slide and other disasters. Pore structure is a significant factor affecting the seepage characteristics of fractured rock mass, while particle size gradation has an important effect on the distribution of pore structure. Through the self‐developed experimental system, the nonlinear seepage test on the fractured sandstones of the coalseam roof was conducted to investigate the influence of seepage pressure, porosity, and fractal dimension. Besides, the nonlinear seepage model was established by Barree–Conway theory. The results showed that, during the seepage process of fractured sandstone, there were significant nonlinear characteristics, which increased with the increase of the seepage pressure. With the increasing porosity, there was greater average pore size of fractured sandstone, stronger permeability, and weaker nonlinear seepage. The seepage characteristics approximated to that of Darcy model. However, with increasing grading fractal dimension, there were smaller average pore size of fractured sandstone, weaker permeability, and stronger nonlinear seepage. The seepage characteristics approximated to that of Forchheimer model.

With open-pit mines excavated, the slopes will be exposed to the natural environment for a long time. Affected by factors like temperature, seepage, mining, freeze-thaw, etc., slope structural integrity and strength will gradually decline as slope exposure time extends. Besides, the development of defect structure within the rocks is closely correlated with time. In this paper, freeze-thaw cycle tests were conducted on the saturated sandstones collected from a certain open-pit mine. According to the test results, the mass density and longitudinal wave velocity gradually increased with more times of freeze-thaw cycles while mechanical properties such as internal friction angle, cohesion, elastic modulus, and uniaxial compressive strength decreased instead. The constitutive model of saturated rock deterioration was established by taking the volume of phase transition of water in microcracks as a variable. Based on the tests results and theoretical analysis, the sensitivity of the factors affecting slope stability under freeze-thaw damage was studied by Control Variable Method (CVM) and Orthogonal Design Method (ODM). It was determined that the internal friction angle and cohesion had a highly significant effect on the test results, while the mass density had a significant effect. The conclusions may play a certain role in guiding slope construction and protection.
In the process of open‐pit excavation and stacking of dump along the side wall, the rock mass inside the composite slope undergoes complicated loading and unloading effect, which are manifested as triaxial stress → horizontal unloading → axial loading. In this study, a corresponding mechanical model of crack propagation in composite slope under loading and unloading effects was established. The stress‐strain curves and deformation characteristics of rock under different stress paths were studied. A series of different tests under unloading pressure condition were carried out to study the behavior of the rock fracture under different confining pressure paths. The results showed that under the same initial stress conditions, the deviator stress required for rock unloading failure was less than that of the conventional triaxial compression. The axial deformation of rock samples was gradually increased with the increase of unloading, and the unloading easily led to rock failure. By analyzing the crack propagation mechanism under loading and unloading stress field, the analytic relation of the limit height of the composite slope with the crack morphology as the variation was determined when crack propagation occurred near the slope surface. This study provides a technical note on local damage and cracks propagation of a fractured rock mass under the loading‐unloading effects in high composite slope.
Understanding the creep behaviours of rocks is essential for the long-term stability of underground excavations in mining engineering. Creep behaviours are more important when the mining depth is greater, which leads to the emergence of weak rock masses and high in situ stresses. In this study, the creep behaviours of argillaceous sandstone (AS) were systematically investigated. For the experimental investigation, creep tests were conducted on AS with different confining pressures (3, 6, 9, 12, 15, and 18 MPa) using an MTS815.02 rock mechanics test system. The mechanical characteristics of AS were analysed. For the numerical study, a nonlinear creep model of AS under equal and different confining pressures was established based on rock creep theory and plastic theory. The results showed that confining pressure could effectively improve the creep failure strength of AS, accelerating its creep deformation rate and process and reducing the final expansion volume. The nonlinear creep model was embedded in the FLAC3D software, and the experimental and numerical results agreed well. The experimental investigation and proposed creep model can provide important guidance in underground mines for safe long-term stability of underground excavations.
This study presents different land saving and loss reducing schemes. Comprehensively compare the economic benefits of the schemes. It is shown that the optimal scheme can recover tons of coal resources on the south slope, creating significant economic benefits. Numerical simulation was utilized to analyze the changes of slope stability, deformation, and shear strain increment in the process of land saving and loss reducing. Results found that the slope stability decreases rapidly, and the toe of the slope has to be internally discharged in time to compress the slope. Timely follow-up of in-slope rows can improve slope stability. The position of the slope shear exit changes with the increase of the distance of the inner row, and its stability increases gradually. When the distance of the lower inner row exceeds 120 m, the increase of the internal row distance has little influence on the slope stability. When the inner distance exceeds 60 m in the process of internal dumping of upper platform, the position of potential sliding plane gradually changes from the lower dump to the upper and lower dump with the increase of inner dumping distance. It shows that the stability of the dump will be damaged if the upper dump continues to be discharged. Therefore, the distance between the upper and lower dump sites is more important than 60 m. The stability of the south slope is good in the process of mining and internal drainage, and the overall stability of the south slope is controllable, based on slope radar monitoring.
